Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 10: The Power They Tried to Erase

The machines lunged.

Fast.

Faster than anything human.

Metal limbs sliced through the air, precise and deadly, their glowing eyes locked onto Liana like she was the only target that mattered.

Her heart slammed once.

Hard.

Then—

Something inside her… shifted.

The fear didn't disappear.

But it changed.

It sharpened.

Focused.

Her breathing slowed.

The world around her seemed to stretch, every second pulling wider, longer, clearer.

She could see everything.

The angle of their movement.

The timing.

The pattern.

Like she had done this before.

Like her body remembered even if her mind didn't.

"Liana!" Daniel's voice cut through. "Move!"

But she didn't.

She stood there.

Still.

Waiting.

The first machine reached her.

Its arm swung toward her neck with terrifying precision.

And at the last second—

She moved.

Not away.

Forward.

Her hand shot out, grabbing the metal limb mid-strike.

The impact should have shattered her bones.

But it didn't.

A sharp pulse ran through her palm.

Something invisible.

Something powerful.

The machine froze.

Just for a second.

But that second changed everything.

"What—" Daniel stopped.

He didn't finish.

Because he saw it too.

The machine… stopped moving.

Its arm trembled under her grip.

Its glowing eyes flickered.

Liana's breath caught.

"I… I'm doing this," she whispered.

The second machine lunged.

Daniel moved instantly this time, tackling it sideways, keeping it off her.

"Stay focused!" he shouted.

But Liana barely heard him.

Because something was happening.

Something inside her.

The world felt… different.

Louder.

Clearer.

She could feel the machine in her hand.

Not just the metal.

Not just the surface.

Everything.

The energy running through it.

The system.

The structure.

Like it was opening itself to her.

Like it knew her.

Her fingers tightened.

And suddenly—

Images flashed in her mind.

Codes.

Patterns.

Systems linking together.

A network.

Her breath hitched.

"I know this…"

The machine twitched violently.

Then—

Its glowing eyes went dark.

Completely.

It dropped.

Dead.

Silence.

Daniel stared.

"That's not possible," he muttered.

But there was no time to process.

The second machine broke free from him and charged again.

This time—

Liana didn't hesitate.

She stepped forward.

Her hand lifted again, instinct guiding her now.

"Stop."

The word left her lips softly.

But something in the air shifted.

The machine froze mid-step.

Just like the first.

Daniel went completely still.

"Liana…"

Her focus narrowed.

Her eyes locked onto the machine.

And for a moment—

It felt like she wasn't looking at it.

She was inside it.

Seeing through it.

Understanding it.

"You don't belong here," she said quietly.

Her fingers curled slightly.

The machine jerked—

Then turned.

Away from her.

Daniel's eyes widened. "What are you—"

It moved past him.

Then—

Slammed itself into the wall.

Hard.

Once.

Twice.

Until—

It stopped moving.

Completely.

Silence filled the space.

Heavy.

Unreal.

Liana's breath became uneven again.

The world snapped back into place all at once.

Too fast.

Too loud.

Too much.

She staggered.

Daniel caught her immediately.

"Hey… hey, stay with me."

"I…" she whispered. "What did I just do?"

He didn't answer right away.

Because he was staring at the machines.

Both of them.

Destroyed.

Not by force.

Not by weapons.

But by her.

"That," he said slowly, "is why they were afraid of you."

Her chest tightened.

"No… I don't understand. I didn't fight them. I just… felt something."

"That's exactly it," he said.

She pulled back slightly, looking at her hands like they didn't belong to her.

"I controlled them," she said.

It wasn't a question.

Daniel nodded once.

"Yes."

Her heart pounded harder.

"How?"

He hesitated.

Then said—

"Because you were never just human."

The words settled heavily between them.

Her breath caught.

"What does that mean?"

Before he could answer—

A slow clap echoed through the space.

Both of them froze.

The sound was calm.

Measured.

Almost amused.

Liana's stomach dropped.

She didn't need to turn around.

She already knew.

But when she did—

Adrian was there.

Leaning casually against the wall, like he had been watching the entire time.

His gaze rested on her.

Not surprised.

Not shocked.

Pleased.

"I was wondering how long it would take," he said.

Daniel stepped in front of her again instantly.

"You shouldn't be here."

Adrian ignored him.

His eyes never left Liana.

"You see it now, don't you?" he said softly. "What you really are."

Her chest tightened.

"I don't know what I am," she said.

"You do," he replied. "You just don't want to accept it yet."

Anger flickered through her.

"Then say it," she snapped. "Stop talking in circles."

A faint smile touched his lips.

"You're not just someone who broke systems," he said.

"You are the system breaker."

Silence.

The words felt… too big.

Too unreal.

"What does that even mean?" she asked.

"It means," he continued, stepping forward slowly, "no system can hold you. No control can limit you. You don't just fight structures like these—"

He glanced briefly at the destroyed machines.

"You rewrite them."

Her breath caught.

"That's why they tried to erase you," he added. "And why I couldn't let them succeed."

Daniel's voice cut in, sharp. "You didn't protect her. You used her."

Adrian's gaze shifted briefly.

"And you didn't?" he asked calmly.

Daniel went silent.

Liana noticed.

Her chest tightened again.

Too many half truths.

Too many secrets.

"Both of you need to stop deciding things for me," she said.

They both looked at her now.

Good.

"From now on," she continued, her voice steadier, stronger, "I decide what I am."

Something changed in the air.

Even Adrian's expression shifted slightly.

Interest.

Respect.

"Then decide," he said.

Her heart pounded.

She looked at him.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at her hands.

The power still lingered there.

Unfamiliar.

But real.

"I'm not going back with you," she said finally.

Adrian didn't react immediately.

"I don't care what I was to you," she continued. "Or what you made me into. I want the truth. All of it."

A long pause followed.

Then Adrian nodded slightly.

"Then come find it," he said.

Her brows furrowed. "What?"

"I won't stop you," he said. "Not yet."

Not yet.

That again.

Her stomach twisted.

"But next time," he added quietly, "you won't be able to walk away so easily."

A chill ran through her.

Before either of them could respond—

The lights flickered.

Then went out.

Complete darkness swallowed the space.

Liana's breath caught.

"Daniel?"

"I'm here."

When the lights came back—

Adrian was gone.

Like he had never been there.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Liana exhaled slowly.

Her body still trembling slightly.

Her mind racing.

Her world completely changed.

She looked at Daniel.

"Tell me everything," she said.

No hesitation this time.

No fear.

Just truth.

He studied her for a moment.

Then nodded.

"I will."

A pause.

Then—

"But once you know… there's no going back."

Her heart steadied.

"Good," she said.

"I don't want to go back."
