Chapter 6: He Knows
Emily didn't move.
Couldn't move.
Her mind was still stuck on one thing—
System offline.
That had never happened before.
Not even once.
And yet, standing in front of Daniel…
it was completely silent.
---
"You're hiding something."
His earlier words echoed in her head.
Now they felt heavier.
More real.
More dangerous.
---
"I don't know what you're talking about," Emily said finally, forcing her voice to stay steady.
Daniel didn't react.
Didn't argue.
He just… looked at her.
Like he was waiting.
---
"Your eyes change."
Emily's breath hitched.
"…What?"
"When you walked into school this morning," he continued calmly, "everyone else saw confidence."
A small pause.
"I saw something else."
Emily swallowed.
"What did you see?"
Daniel stepped a little closer.
Not threatening.
Not nervous.
Just certain.
---
"Something that doesn't belong to you."
---
Silence.
Heavy.
Unavoidable.
---
Emily's fingers curled slightly at her sides.
"You're making assumptions."
"No," Daniel said quietly. "I'm recognizing a pattern."
Her heart skipped.
Pattern?
---
"I've seen this before."
That sentence hit harder than anything else.
Emily's eyes widened slightly.
"…Seen what before?"
For the first time—
Daniel hesitated.
Just for a second.
Then he exhaled softly.
---
"People like you."
---
The words felt like a spark in a dark room.
Emily took a small step back.
"What do you mean people like me?"
Daniel's gaze didn't leave hers.
"People who suddenly change."
"People who gain something they shouldn't have."
"People who think they're in control…"
A pause.
His expression darkened slightly.
---
"…until it starts taking something from them."
---
Emily's chest tightened.
He knows.
Not everything—
but enough.
---
"You're lying," she said quickly. "If something like that existed, everyone would know."
Daniel shook his head slightly.
"No. Because it doesn't last long."
A chill ran down her spine.
"What do you mean?"
---
Daniel looked away for a moment, like he was remembering something he didn't want to.
Then he spoke again.
Lower this time.
---
"They all disappear."
---
The air in the room felt colder.
Emily's throat went dry.
"…Disappear?"
Daniel nodded slowly.
"At first, they're powerful. Confident. Untouchable."
His eyes returned to hers.
"Then they change."
"How?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
---
"They stop feeling."
---
Emily's heart slammed against her chest.
The system's words echoed in her mind:
…lose everything that makes you human.
---
"And after that?" she asked.
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
When he finally did…
his voice was almost emotionless.
---
"They're no longer themselves."
---
Silence filled the space between them.
---
Emily shook her head slightly.
"No… that's not going to happen to me."
Her voice sounded less convincing than she wanted.
"I'm different."
Daniel didn't argue.
He just asked one question:
---
"Can you stop?"
---
Emily froze.
Her mind went blank.
Her body stiffened.
Because—
she didn't have an answer.
---
The silence said everything.
---
Daniel studied her expression carefully.
Then he sighed quietly.
---
"Yeah," he said. "That's what I thought."
---
Emily felt something twist inside her chest.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not of her parents.
Not of being judged.
But of something far worse—
losing herself.
---
"…Then help me."
The words slipped out before she could stop them.
---
Daniel paused.
Surprised.
---
Emily clenched her fists slightly.
"I don't fully understand what's happening," she admitted. "But you do."
Her voice steadied.
"Or at least more than I do."
---
She met his eyes directly.
No system.
No influence.
Just her.
---
"So if you know something…" she said softly,
"…tell me how to stop it."
---
For the first time—
Daniel didn't have an immediate answer.
---
And somehow…
that made everything even more dangerous.
