Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 8 — The Empress Makes Her Move

The palace was never truly silent.

Even in the dead of night, whispers slithered through the corridors like restless spirits. Lin Yue sat by the window, watching the moonlight spill across the polished floor. Xiao An had finally fallen asleep beside the bed, exhausted from crying and fear.

But Lin Yue couldn't sleep.

Not after what happened.

Not after the emperor's words.

Not after realizing how many people wanted her gone.

A soft knock broke the stillness.

Lin Yue stiffened. "Xiao An… someone's at the door."

Xiao An jolted awake, scrambling to her feet. "I'll check!"

She opened the door just a crack—

And immediately dropped to her knees.

"Y- Your Majesty!"

Lin Yue's heart skipped.

But it wasn't the emperor.

A woman stepped inside, her presence colder than winter frost.

She wore a phoenix‑embroidered robe of deep crimson, her hair adorned with gold and pearls. Her beauty was sharp, refined, and dangerous — the kind that could command a kingdom with a single glance.

The Empress.

Lin Yue stood instinctively, her pulse racing.

The Empress's eyes swept the room, lingering on the bed, the curtains, the faint scent of sandalwood — all signs that the emperor had been here recently.

Then her gaze landed on Lin Yue.

"You are the woman causing such chaos in my palace."

Her voice was soft, but every word carried the weight of authority.

Lin Yue bowed awkwardly. "Your Majesty, I—"

"Silence."

The Empress stepped closer, her expression unreadable.

"You stand in the Dragon Hall," she said. "A place no concubine has ever been allowed to enter. Not even I."

Lin Yue swallowed. "I didn't choose to be here."

"No," the Empress said coldly. "But you didn't refuse either."

Lin Yue's breath caught. "Refuse… the emperor?"

A faint, humorless smile touched the Empress's lips. "You are new to this world. You do not understand how it works."

She circled Lin Yue slowly, like a predator assessing prey.

"His Majesty is a man of power, not affection. He has never favored a woman. Never visited the harem. Never shown interest in any concubine."

She stopped in front of Lin Yue.

"And yet… he brought you here."

Lin Yue felt the accusation like a blade

"I don't know why," she whispered. "I don't even know how I got here."

The Empress's eyes narrowed. "Do not insult me with lies."

"I'm not lying."

"Then you are a fool," the Empress said. "And fools die quickly in this palace."

Xiao An trembled on the floor, unable to speak.

The Empress leaned in, her voice dropping to a whisper only Lin Yue could hear.

"Listen carefully. You may have caught his eye for a moment, but the emperor's attention is a dangerous thing. It burns bright… and destroys everything it touches."

Lin Yue's heart pounded.

"I am giving you a chance," the Empress continued. "Leave the Dragon Hall. Return to the servants' quarters. Disappear quietly. If you do, I will ensure you live."

Lin Yue stared at her, stunned. "You're… offering to spare me?"

"I am offering you survival," the Empress said. "Take it."

Lin Yue hesitated.

She didn't want power.

She didn't want enemies.

She didn't want to be the emperor's obsession.

But she also knew one thing:

The emperor would never allow her to leave.

Before she could answer, the doors slammed open.

A cold voice filled the room.

"What," Emperor Jin Longwei said, "is the Empress doing in my chambers?"

The Empress straightened, her expression composed. "I came to advise His Majesty—"

"You came to threaten her."

The emperor stepped inside, his gaze burning with fury.

"Leave," he commanded.

The Empress's eyes flashed. "I am your wife."

"You are Empress in title only," he said. "Do not overstep."

The Empress's breath hitched — the first crack in her perfect composure.

She turned to Lin Yue, her voice low and icy.

"This is not over."

Then she swept out of the room, her robes trailing behind her like a crimson storm.

Silence fell.

Lin Yue stared at the emperor, her heart racing.

He walked toward her slowly, his expression dark.

"Did she touch you?" he asked.

"No," Lin Yue whispered. "But she… warned me."

His jaw tightened. "Ignore her."

"I can't," Lin Yue said softly. "She's right. I don't belong here."

He stopped in front of her, lifting her chin gently.

"You belong where I say you belong."

Her breath caught.

"And you," he murmured, "belong with me."
