Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 9 — Her First Lesson in Survival

Morning came quietly, but the palace did not.

Lin Yue woke to the sound of distant bells, soft footsteps, and the faint rustle of silk. Xiao An was already up, anxiously arranging the room as if preparing for an inspection.

"Did you sleep at all?" Lin Yue asked.

Xiao An shook her head. "I was too worried, My Lady."

Lin Yue sighed. "Please don't call me that. I'm not—"

"You are," Xiao An whispered urgently. "Whether you want to be or not."

Before Lin Yue could respond, a guard's voice echoed from outside.

"His Majesty has ordered breakfast to be delivered."

Xiao An's eyes widened. "He's… sending food? Personally?"

Lin Yue's heart skipped. "Is that unusual?"

"Extremely," Xiao An said. "The emperor never sends food to anyone. Not even the Empress."

Lin Yue's stomach tightened.

Everything he did for her was unusual.

Everything he did for her was dangerous.

Moments later, two palace servants entered carrying trays of steaming dishes — delicate dumplings, fragrant porridge, sweet lotus pastries, and a pot of jasmine tea.

But they didn't set the trays down.

They knelt.

"By His Majesty's decree," one said, "all food served to Lady Lin Yue must be tasted first."

Lin Yue blinked. "Tasted… first?"

Xiao An whispered, "Poison testing."

The servants each took a bite from every dish, then waited silently.

Only when they remained unharmed did they place the trays on the table.

Lin Yue stared at the food, suddenly nauseous.

"This is too much," she murmured. "I didn't ask for any of this."

Xiao An lowered her voice. "My Lady… this is your first lesson."

"Lesson?"

"In survival," Xiao An said. "If His Majesty didn't order poison testing, someone would have poisoned your breakfast."

Lin Yue froze.

Xiao An continued softly, "You are the emperor's favored woman now. That makes you the harem's greatest threat."

Lin Yue sank onto a cushion, her hands trembling. "I don't want to be anyone's threat."

"But you are," Xiao An whispered. "Even if you do nothing."

Lin Yue stared at the steaming dishes, suddenly understanding the weight of her situation.

She wasn't just a stranger in this world.

She was a target.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

A guard entered, bowing deeply. "Lady Lin Yue, His Majesty requests your presence in the Imperial Garden."

Lin Yue's heart jumped. "He… wants to see me?"

"Yes. Immediately"

Xiao An's face paled. "My Lady… you must be careful."

Lin Yue nodded, though her stomach churned with nerves.

As she followed the guard through the palace corridors, she felt dozens of eyes on her — servants whispering behind sleeves, eunuchs bowing stiffly, concubines glaring from balconies.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

When she reached the Imperial Garden, she saw him.

Emperor Jin Longwei stood beneath a blooming plum tree, hands clasped behind his back, his robe fluttering in the morning breeze. He looked calm, composed… but when he turned and saw her, something in his expression softened.

"You came," he said quietly.

Lin Yue bowed awkwardly. "Your Majesty… you summoned me."

He stepped closer, his gaze sweeping over her as if checking for injuries again.

"Did you sleep?" he asked.

"A little."

"Did you eat?"

"Yes."

"Was the food tested?"

She hesitated. "Yes."

He exhaled, relieved. "Good."

Lin Yue looked at him, confused. "Why are you doing all this?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached out and gently brushed a fallen plum blossom from her hair.

"Because," he said softly, "you are not safe here."

Lin Yue swallowed. "I know."

"And because," he continued, his voice dropping, "I cannot bear the thought of losing you."

Her breath caught.

He stepped closer, lowering his voice so only she could hear.

"You must learn how to survive in this palace," he said. "And I will teach you."

Lin Yue stared at him, stunned. "Teach me… how?"

"By staying close to me," he said. "By listening to my warnings. By trusting me."

His hand brushed hers — not grabbing, not forcing, just a touch.

"But most of all," he murmured, "by understanding that you are no longer alone."

Lin Yue's heart pounded.

She didn't know if she could trust him.

She didn't know if she could trust anyone.

But as she looked into his eyes — dark, intense, unwavering — she realized something terrifying:

He wasn't giving her a choice.

And for the first time since arriving in this world, she understood the truth:

Survival in the palace wasn't about strength.

It wasn't about intelligence.

It wasn't even about luck.

It was about power.

And the emperor had just offered her his.
