Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 13 — The Emperor’s Growing Obsession

The palace had always been a place of order — strict routines, silent corridors, and predictable patterns.

But ever since Lin Yue arrived, everything felt… different.

Servants whispered more.

Concubines watched more.

Ministers bowed lower.

And at the center of it all was Emperor Jin Longwei, whose behavior had shifted in ways no one could ignore.

That Morning

Lin Yue sat at the low table, sipping warm tea as Xiao An braided her hair. She still felt a faint ache in her limbs from the night before — not painful, just a reminder of how close the emperor had been.

Xiao An kept glancing at her with wide eyes.

"My Lady… you look different today."

Lin Yue blinked. "Different how?"

"Brighter," Xiao An whispered. "Like someone who… who is cherished."

Lin Yue's cheeks warmed. "It's not like that."

Xiao An smiled shyly. "His Majesty stayed the entire night. Everyone knows."

Lin Yue nearly choked on her tea. "Everyone?"

Xiao An nodded. "The guards saw him leave at dawn. The palace is buzzing."

Lin Yue groaned softly. "That's the last thing I need."

Before Xiao An could respond, a knock sounded at the door.

A guard entered, bowing deeply. "Lady Lin Yue, His Majesty requests your presence in the Hall of Tranquil Waters."

Lin Yue frowned. "Why?"

"He did not say."

Xiao An's eyes sparkled. "He wants to see you again."

Lin Yue's heart fluttered — with nerves, not excitement.

The Hall of Tranquil Waters

The hall was quiet, filled with the soft sound of flowing water from the indoor fountain. The emperor stood near the window, reviewing scrolls. When he heard her footsteps, he turned.

His expression changed instantly.

The cold, distant emperor vanished.

In his place was a man whose eyes softened the moment they found her.

"You came," he said.

"You summoned me," she replied gently.

He stepped closer, studying her face with an intensity that made her breath catch.

"Did you sleep well?" he asked.

"Yes."

"Are you still tired?"

"A little."

His jaw tightened slightly — a reaction she didn't understand.

He reached out, brushing a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "You should rest more."

Lin Yue looked away. "Your Majesty… you don't have to worry about me so much."

"I do," he said simply.

She hesitated. "Why?"

He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he walked to the table and poured her a cup of tea, placing it in her hands with surprising gentleness.

"Because I think of you," he said quietly. "More than I should."

Her heart skipped.

He continued, voice low and steady. "When I am in court, I wonder if you've eaten. When I walk through the palace, I wonder if you are safe. When I close my eyes, I see you."

Lin Yue's breath trembled. "Your Majesty…"

He stepped closer, his gaze unwavering. "I have never felt this way before."

She swallowed. "I don't know how to handle this."

"You don't need to," he said. "Just stay by my side."

Lin Yue looked up at him, conflicted. "But the harem… the Empress… the court—"

"They will not touch you," he said firmly. "Not while I live."

His words were a vow, heavy and absolute.

But before she could respond, a eunuch rushed in, breathless.

"Your Majesty! Forgive the intrusion, but— the ministers are demanding an audience. They say it concerns… Lady Lin Yue."

The emperor's expression darkened instantly.

Lin Yue's stomach dropped. "Me?"

The eunuch bowed deeply. "They claim Your Majesty's actions are disrupting palace order."

The emperor's voice turned cold. "Let them wait."

"But—"

"I said let them wait."

The eunuch fled.

Lin Yue stared at him, stunned. "You can't ignore the ministers because of me."

"I can," he said. "And I will."

"Your Majesty—"

He took her hands gently, his voice softening again.

"Lin Yue… I do not care what they say. I do not care what they want. My only concern is you."

Her heart pounded.

He lifted her hand to his lips, brushing a soft kiss across her knuckles — a gesture so intimate it made her breath catch.

"You are becoming important to me," he murmured. "More important than I ever intended."

Lin Yue felt her chest tighten — with fear, with warmth, with something she couldn't name.

"Your Majesty… this is dangerous."

"For them," he said. "Not for you."

And as he held her hand, she realized something terrifying:

The emperor wasn't just protecting her.

He was falling for her.

And the entire palace would burn before he let her go.
