Chapter 16 - CHAPTER 15 — Lin Yue’s First Palace Lesson

The morning sun filtered through the silk curtains of the Dragon Hall, casting soft gold across the floor. Lin Yue sat quietly at the low table, her hands folded neatly in her lap.

Today was different.

Today, she would begin her first official palace lesson.

Xiao An fussed with her sleeves. "My Lady, the instructors are the best in the empire. They teach the Empress, the consorts, even the princesses."

Lin Yue smiled faintly. "Then I will learn."

Xiao An bit her lip. "They… may not be kind."

"I don't need kindness," Lin Yue said softly. "I need knowledge."

The Hall of Refined Virtue

When Lin Yue entered, three instructors were already waiting.

.Madam Hua, the etiquette master, known for her sharp tongue.

.Master Liang, the scholar who taught poetry and classics.

.Madam Qin, the instructor of palace conduct and hierarchy.

All three bowed stiffly — not out of respect, but out of obligation.

Madam Hua spoke first. "Lady Lin Yue, your background is… unclear. But since His Majesty insists, we will teach you."

Lin Yue bowed politely. "I appreciate your guidance."

Madam Hua's eyes narrowed, as if disappointed she didn't tremble.

"Sit," she ordered.

Lin Yue sat.

The lesson began immediately.

Etiquette

Madam Hua demonstrated the proper bow for a consort. "Your back must be straight. Your gaze lowered. Your hands placed precisely here."

Lin Yue copied the movement.

Perfectly.

Madam Hua blinked. "Again."

Lin Yue repeated it.

Still perfect.

Madam Hua's lips tightened. "Beginner's luck."

But after ten more repetitions, her expression shifted from irritation… to reluctant acknowledgment.

Classics and Poetry

Master Liang opened a scroll. "Recite the first line."

Lin Yue read it once, then repeated it flawlessly.

Master Liang raised an eyebrow. "You memorized it that quickly?"

"I have a good memory," she said simply.

He tested her again.

And again.

Each time, she answered calmly, without hesitation.

Master Liang stroked his beard. "You learn faster than most nobles."

Lin Yue bowed her head. "Thank you, Master."

Palace Conduct

Madam Qin stepped forward, her expression stern. "This palace is a battlefield. You must know who outranks whom, who you may speak to, and who you must avoid."

She unrolled a long chart of the harem hierarchy.

Lin Yue studied it silently.

After a moment, Madam Qin asked, "Who stands above a Noble Consort?"

"The Empress," Lin Yue replied.

"And below a Pure Consort?"

"A Talented Lady."

Madam Qin's eyes widened. "You memorized it already?"

Lin Yue nodded. "It's not difficult."

Madam Qin exchanged a look with the others — a look that said:

This girl is not simple.

A Subtle Shift

By the end of the lesson, the instructors were no longer dismissive.

They were cautious.

Respectful.

Madam Hua cleared her throat. "Lady Lin Yue… you learn exceptionally fast."

Master Liang nodded. "If you continue like this, you will surpass many in the harem."

Madam Qin added quietly, "Perhaps even those who have been here for years."

Lin Yue smiled politely. "I only wish to understand the palace better."

But inside, she felt something new.

Confidence.

Control

Power

Later That Afternoon

When the emperor entered her chamber, he found her reading a scroll.

He paused, surprised. "You're studying?"

"Yes," she said. "Your instructors are strict."

He smirked. "Did they frighten you?"

"No."

He raised a brow. "No?"

Lin Yue looked up at him, her gaze steady. "I won't be afraid of anyone here."

The emperor's expression softened — not with amusement, but with something like pride.

He walked to her, lifting her chin gently.

"That," he murmured, "is exactly what I want."

Lin Yue held his gaze.

And for the first time, she felt like she wasn't just surviving the palace.

She was beginning to master it.
