Chapter 18 - CHAPTER 17 — The Empress Makes Her Move

The Empress's palace, the Crimson Phoenix Hall, was known for its beauty — red pillars, gold lanterns, and a garden filled with rare peonies.

But today, it felt cold.

Lin Yue walked behind the eunuch who escorted her, her steps steady. She wasn't trembling. She wasn't nervous.

She was ready.

Xiao An had begged to come, but Lin Yue refused.

This was something she needed to face alone.

The doors opened.

The Empress sat at the center of the hall, dressed in deep scarlet robes embroidered with phoenix feathers. Her posture was perfect, her expression unreadable.

Lin Yue bowed. "Greetings, Your Majesty."

The Empress didn't respond immediately. She simply studied Lin Yue, her gaze sharp and assessing.

Finally, she spoke.

"You've grown bolder."

Lin Yue lifted her head slightly. "I am only learning."

"Learning," the Empress repeated, her voice smooth. "Yes. I've heard about your lessons. The instructors seem… impressed."

Lin Yue remained silent.

The Empress continued, "You memorize quickly. You adapt quickly. You even carry yourself differently."

Her eyes narrowed.

"You're becoming a threat."

Lin Yue met her gaze calmly. "I have no intention of threatening anyone."

"That is what makes you dangerous," the Empress said. "You don't need to try. Your existence alone disrupts the balance of the harem."

Lin Yue's fingers tightened slightly, but her voice stayed steady. "I cannot control how others feel."

The Empress stood, her robes flowing like fire as she descended the steps.

"You wear the Empress Dowager's hairpin," she said. "A symbol no concubine has ever touched."

Lin Yue touched the jade hairpin lightly. "His Majesty gave it to me."

"Yes," the Empress said softly. "He did. And that is the problem."

She circled Lin Yue slowly, like a predator studying prey.

"You have no family. No background. No alliances. You should be powerless."

She stopped in front of Lin Yue.

"And yet… he chooses you."

Lin Yue held her gaze. "I did not ask him to."

The Empress's smile was thin. "Men do not need to be asked. They choose what they desire."

She leaned in slightly.

"But desire is fragile. And the palace is cruel. If you rise too quickly, you will fall just as fast."

Lin Yue's voice was quiet but firm. "Then I will learn to stand."

The Empress's eyes flickered — surprise, then something sharper.

"You are not as timid as you pretend."

"I am not pretending," Lin Yue said. "I am simply not afraid."

A long silence followed.

Finally, the Empress straightened. "Very well. If you wish to stand… then stand properly."

She clapped her hands.

Two maids entered, carrying a tray.

On it lay a folded robe — pale lavender silk with delicate embroidery.

"A gift," the Empress said. "A robe suitable for someone who wishes to be seen."

Lin Yue hesitated. "Your Majesty —"

"Take it," the Empress said. "And understand what it means."

Lin Yue accepted the robe with both hands.

The Empress's voice lowered. "If you wear this, you step into the harem's battlefield. You will no longer be a quiet shadow in the emperor's hall."

Lin Yue lifted her chin slightly. "I am not a shadow."

The Empress's eyes gleamed. "We shall see."

Later That Evening

Lin Yue returned to the Dragon Hall, the robe folded neatly in her arms.

The emperor entered moments later, his expression dark. "She summoned you."

"Yes."

"What did she say?"

Lin Yue looked up at him, her gaze steady. "She warned me."

He stepped closer. "Did she frighten you?"

"No."

He paused, studying her face.

"What did you tell her?"

Lin Yue held up the lavender robe. "That I will learn to stand."

The emperor's eyes softened — with pride, with something deeper.

He touched her cheek gently. "You already are."

Lin Yue looked at the robe again.

This wasn't just a gift.

It was a declaration.

A challenge.

A beginning.

And she was ready.
