Chapter 17 - CHAPTER 16 — A Gift From the Emperor

The palace was unusually quiet that morning.

Lin Yue sat by the window, reading through the scrolls Master Liang had assigned her. She was so focused she didn't notice Xiao An rushing in until the girl nearly tripped over her own feet.

"My Lady! His Majesty is coming!"

Lin Yue blinked. "Now?"

"Yes! He's already at the entrance!"

Lin Yue stood quickly, smoothing her robes just as the doors opened.

The emperor entered, dressed in deep black robes embroidered with gold. His presence filled the room instantly — calm, commanding, and impossible to ignore.

He looked at her with that softened gaze he reserved only for her.

"You're studying again," he said.

"I'm trying," she replied.

"You're doing more than trying."

He stepped closer, and Lin Yue felt her heartbeat quicken — not from fear, but from the intensity of his attention.

"I brought something for you," he said.

Lin Yue blinked. "For me?"

He nodded to Eunuch Zhao, who stepped forward carrying a long, lacquered box. The emperor took it himself and placed it gently in Lin Yue's hands.

"Open it."

Lin Yue lifted the lid.

Inside lay a hairpin of pure white jade, carved into the shape of a blooming magnolia. Tiny gold threads wrapped around the petals, and a single pearl hung from the end, catching the light.

Lin Yue stared, stunned. "This is… beautiful."

"It belonged to my mother," the emperor said quietly. "She wore it before she became Empress."

Lin Yue's breath caught. "Your Majesty… I can't accept something so precious."

"You can," he said. "And you will."

She looked up at him, unsure. "Why give this to me?"

He held her gaze, his voice low. "Because I want the palace to know you are under my protection. And because…"

He paused, choosing his words carefully.

"…I want you to have something that proves your place here is not temporary."

Lin Yue's heart tightened.

He reached out, taking the hairpin from the box. "May I?"

She nodded.

The emperor stepped behind her, lifting her hair gently. His touch was careful, almost reverent, as he slid the jade hairpin into her dark hair.

When he stepped back, his eyes softened.

"It suits you."

Lin Yue touched the hairpin lightly. "Thank you, Your Majesty."

He shook his head. "Call me Longwei."

She froze. "I… I can't."

"You can," he said. "And you should."

Her cheeks warmed. "Longwei…"

His breath caught — just slightly — as if hearing his name from her lips affected him more than he expected.

He stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Lin Yue… you are becoming someone I cannot ignore."

She swallowed. "That's dangerous."

"For others," he said. "Not for you."

Before she could respond, a loud knock echoed through the hall.

Eunuch Zhao rushed in, bowing deeply. "Your Majesty! The Empress requests an urgent audience. She says it concerns… Lady Lin Yue."

The emperor's expression darkened instantly.

Lin Yue stiffened. "The Empress?"

"Yes," the eunuch said nervously. "She insists."

The emperor turned to Lin Yue, his voice calm but firm. "Stay here. Do not leave this hall."

Lin Yue nodded.

He brushed a hand against her cheek — a fleeting, protective gesture — before turning away.

As he left, Xiao An whispered, "My Lady… the Empress never requests anything urgently. This is serious."

Lin Yue touched the jade hairpin again.

Serious or not, she wasn't the same frightened girl anymore.

And the Empress was about to learn that.
