The morning after her first night in the Moonlit Courtyard, Lin Yue woke to the sound of soft footsteps.
Xiao An rushed in, flustered.
"My Lady! Someone sent a gift!"
Lin Yue blinked. "A gift"
"Yes! It's waiting in the main hall."
Lin Yue dressed quickly and followed her. When she entered the hall, she saw it:
A delicate porcelain vase, painted with plum blossoms.
Beautiful. Elegant. Expensive.
But something felt wrong."
Xiao An whispered, "There's no name on the card."
Lin Yue picked up the small slip of paper.
Only one sentence was written:
"Beauty fades. Favor fades faster."
Xiao An gasped. "My Lady… this is a threat!"
Lin Yue set the card down calmly. "It's a warning."
Before Xiao An could respond, a maid entered and bowed.
"Noble Lady Lin, the Empress requests your presence."
Xiao An nearly choked. "Again?!"
Lin Yue exhaled slowly. "Let's go."
The Empress's Garden
The Empress waited beneath a pavilion, surrounded by blooming peonies. Her expression was serene, but her eyes were sharp.
Lin Yue bowed. "Greetings, Your Majesty."
The Empress gestured for her to rise. "You received a gift this morning."
Lin Yue's breath stilled. "You know of it?"
"Everything that enters the harem passes through my hands," the Empress said. "I allowed it."
Lin Yue's heart tightened. "Why?"
The Empress studied her. "Because you need to understand something."
She stepped closer, her voice low.
"You are no longer dealing with petty concubines. Your rise has drawn the attention of someone far more dangerous."
Lin Yue met her gaze. "Who?"
The Empress's lips curved slightly — not a smile, but something colder.
"Noble Consort Xue."
Lin Yue frowned. "I have never met her."
"You will," the Empress said. "She has been away from the palace for months, visiting her family. She returned last night."
Lin Yue's pulse quickened.
The Empress continued, "She is the daughter of the Minister of War. Her family controls half the empire's military. She has influence, power, and ambition."
Lin Yue swallowed. "And she sees me as a threat?"
"She sees everyone as a threat," the Empress said. "But you… you are new. Unpredictable. Favored."
The Empress's gaze sharpened.
"She will not attack you openly. She prefers subtlety. Psychological games. Quiet destruction."
Lin Yue thought of the vase. The message.
The Empress stepped closer. "Do not underestimate her."
Lin Yue bowed. "Thank you for the warning."
The Empress studied her for a long moment.
"You are calm," she said. "Good. You will need that."
Returning to the Moonlit Courtyard
Xiao An rushed to her. "My Lady! Did the Empress scold you?"
"No," Lin Yue said. "She warned me."
"About what?"
Lin Yue looked at the porcelain vase again.
"Someone new has entered the game."
Xiao An shivered. "Who?"
Lin Yue's voice was quiet.
"Noble Consort Xue."
Xiao An paled. "The emperor's former favorite?"
Lin Yue froze. "Former."
Xiao An nodded quickly. "Before you came… she was the one he visited most."
Lin Yue's heart tightened — not with jealousy, but with understanding.
This wasn't just politics.
This was personal.
Later That Night
The emperor arrived late, his expression tired. Lin Yue poured him tea, her movements gentle.
He watched her for a moment. "You're quiet."
"I met the Empress today," she said.
His eyes sharpened. "What did she say?"
"She told me about Noble Consort Xue."
The emperor's jaw tightened. "She returned sooner than expected."
Lin Yue looked at him. "She sent me a message."
His expression darkened instantly. "What message?"
Lin Yue repeated the words.
The emperor stood abruptly, anger simmering beneath his calm exterior.
"She dares—"
Lin Yue touched his sleeve gently. "I'm not afraid."
He looked at her, his anger softening into something deeper.
"You should be careful," he said. "Xue is not like the others."
Lin Yue nodded. "I will be."
He cupped her cheek, his voice low.
"I won't let anyone harm you."
Lin Yue held his gaze. "I know."
But as she lay awake later, staring at the magnolia tree outside her window, she whispered to herself:
"Let her come."
Because fear was no longer her companion.
Strength was.
And Noble Consort Xue would soon learn that Lin Yue was not as fragile as she appeared.
