Chapter 27 - CHAPTER 26 — Noble Consort Xue Makes Her Move

The palace felt different the next morning.

Quieter.

Heavier.

As if the air itself sensed that someone powerful had returned.

Lin Yue sat in the Moonlit Courtyard, reviewing the daily reports her new attendants brought her. She was still adjusting to the responsibilities of a Noble Lady — approving fabrics, assigning servants, managing small disputes.

Xiao An rushed in, breathless.

"My Lady! Noble Consort Xue is hosting a tea gathering today."

Lin Yue didn't look up. "And?"

"She invited every high‑ranking consort… except you."

Lin Yue paused.

There it was.

The first move.

Xiao An wrung her hands. "She's doing it on purpose. She wants everyone to see you're being excluded."

Lin Yue set the scroll down calmly.

"Let her."

Xiao An stared. "My Lady—"

"Being excluded is not a loss," Lin Yue said softly. "It's information."

Xiao An blinked. "Information?"

Lin Yue nodded. "She wants to see how I react."

"And how will you react?"

Lin Yue smiled faintly. "By not reacting at all."

The Tea Gathering

Though she wasn't invited, Lin Yue heard the whispers drifting through the corridors.

"Noble Consort Xue looks stunning today…"

"She brought gifts for everyone…"

"She's reminding the palace who she is…"

"She asked about Noble Lady Lin…"

"What did she say?"

"She smiled and said, 'Some flowers bloom too quickly.'"

Lin Yue listened quietly as she walked through the garden.

Xue was clever.

She didn't attack directly.

She planted seeds.

Seeds that would grow into doubt, jealousy, fear.

Lin Yue stopped beneath the magnolia tree, touching one of the petals.

"Too quickly," she murmured. "Or simply at the right time?"

A Messenger Arrives

A maid approached, bowing deeply.

"Noble Lady Lin, Noble Consort Xue requests your presence."

Xiao An nearly choked. "Now she wants you?!"

Lin Yue stood. "Let's go."

The Crimson Pavilion

Noble Consort Xue sat alone, pouring tea with graceful, practiced movements. She didn't look up when Lin Yue entered.

"Greetings, Noble Consort Xue," Lin Yue said, bowing.

Xue finally lifted her gaze, smiling sweetly.

"Ah. The emperor's newest treasure."

Lin Yue remained silent.

Xue gestured to the seat across from her. "Sit."

Lin Yue obeyed.

Xue poured her a cup of tea. "You must be wondering why I didn't invite you earlier."

"No," Lin Yue said calmly. "I assumed you had your reasons."

Xue's smile tightened. "You're honest. I appreciate that."

She leaned forward slightly.

"Tell me, Lin Yue… do you know how many women have sat where you sit now?"

Lin Yue met her gaze. "Many, I assume."

"Many," Xue echoed. "All of them favored. All of them adored. All of them forgotten."

Lin Yue's fingers tightened around her cup.

Xue continued, her voice soft and poisonous.

"The emperor's affection is like spring rain — warm, gentle, and fleeting."

Lin Yue said nothing.

Xue tilted her head. "Do you truly believe you will be different?"

Lin Yue lifted her cup, her voice steady.

"I don't need to believe anything. I simply live each day as it comes."

Xue's eyes narrowed. "You're calm."

"Should I not be?"

Xue leaned back, studying her.

"You're not what I expected."

Lin Yue set her cup down. "And what did you expect?"

"A frightened little girl," Xue said. "Someone who would crumble under pressure."

Lin Yue smiled faintly. "I've already survived worse."

Xue's expression flickered — surprise, then irritation.

She stood, her voice cool.

"Enjoy your time in the Moonlit Courtyard, Lin Yue. The palace is watching you."

Lin Yue rose as well. "Then I will make sure they see me clearly."

For the first time, Xue's smile vanished completely.

Returning to the Moonlit Courtyard

Xiao An rushed to her. "My Lady! What did she say?"

Lin Yue walked to the magnolia tree, touching its trunk gently.

"She warned."

Xiao An swallowed. "Are you scared?"

Lin Yue shook her head.

"No. I'm curious."

"Curious?"

Lin Yue looked up at the drifting petals.

"To see what she does next."

Later That Night

The emperor arrived unexpectedly, his expression tense.

"You met Xue."

"Yes."

"What did she say?"

Lin Yue looked at him calmly. "She tested me."

"And?"

Lin Yue stepped closer, her voice soft but firm.

"I didn't break."

The emperor exhaled slowly, relief and pride mixing in his gaze.

"You're stronger than she thinks."

Lin Yue touched the jade hairpin in her hair.

"I'm stronger than I used to be."

He brushed her cheek gently.

"And you will need to be."

Because Noble Consort Xue had made her move.

And the game had only just begun.
