The morning sun filtered through the magnolia branches as Lin Yue walked through her courtyard, reviewing the list of new servants assigned to her.
Xiao An trailed behind her, chattering nervously.
"My Lady, the palace is still talking about Noble Consort Xue's return. They say she's already asked about you."
Lin Yue didn't look up. "Let her ask."
Xiao An swallowed. "You're not scared at all?"
Lin Yue paused, touching the jade hairpin in her hair.
"I don't have the luxury of fear anymore."
Before Xiao An could respond, a eunuch rushed in.
"Noble Lady Lin, His Majesty requests your presence in the Imperial Study."
Lin Yue blinked. "Now?"
"Yes, My Lady. Immediately."
Xiao An's eyes widened. "He never summons anyone there!"
Lin Yue exhaled slowly. "Then I should go."
The Imperial Study
The emperor stood by the window, hands clasped behind his back. Scrolls lay open on the table, but he wasn't reading them.
He was waiting.
When Lin Yue entered, he turned sharply.
"You came quickly."
Lin Yue bowed. "You summoned me."
He studied her for a long moment — too long — as if checking she was unharmed.
"Did anyone bother you this morning?" he asked.
"No."
"Did anyone send you anything?"
Lin Yue hesitated. "Only the vase."
His jaw tightened. "Xue's doing."
Lin Yue stepped closer. "You're angry."
"I'm not angry," he said.
But he was.
She could see it in the way his shoulders tensed, in the way his voice sharpened.
Lin Yue spoke softly. "Your Majesty, I can handle her."
He turned to her fully, eyes dark.
"That is not the point."
"Then what is?"
He stepped closer, lowering his voice.
"She thinks she can intimidate you. She thinks she can frighten you into hiding. She thinks she can take back what she lost."
Lin Yue blinked. "What she lost?"
The emperor's gaze softened — but only slightly.
"She was once important to me," he admitted. "But that time has passed."
Lin Yue's heart tightened. "I see."
"No," he said, stepping even closer. "You don't."
His hand lifted, brushing her cheek with a gentleness that contradicted the storm in his eyes.
"She returned expecting the palace to revolve around her again. But it doesn't."
Lin Yue swallowed. "Your Majesty —"
"It revolves around you."
Her breath caught.
He continued, voice low and unguarded.
"When I heard she sent you that message, I wanted to drag her out of her courtyard myself."
Lin Yue stared at him. "Why?"
His jaw clenched. "Because she thinks she can touch what is mine."
Silence.
Lin Yue's pulse quickened. "I am not an object."
His expression softened instantly. "I know."
He lowered his hand, but his voice remained warm, intense.
"But you are someone I care for. Deeply. And I will not let anyone threaten you."
Lin Yue looked away, her voice barely above a whisper.
"You're jealous."
He didn't deny it.
Instead, he stepped behind her, his breath brushing her ear.
"I don't like the idea of anyone else trying to claim your attention."
Lin Yue's heart pounded. "No one is."
"Good," he murmured. "Keep it that way."
She turned to face him, her gaze steady.
"You don't need to be jealous."
He smiled faintly — a rare, vulnerable smile.
"Then don't give me a reason."
As she Left the Study
Xiao An waited anxiously outside.
"My Lady! What happened? You look… different."
Lin Yue touched her cheek, still warm from his hand.
"I'm not sure," she whispered. "But something changed."
Xiao An blinked. "Changed how?"
Lin Yue looked back at the study doors, her heart still racing.
"The emperor," she said softly. "He's not just protective anymore."
Xiao An gasped. "Then what is he?"
Lin Yue exhaled slowly, her voice trembling with realization.
"Possessive."
And somewhere in the palace, Noble Consort Xue would soon learn:
She wasn't the only one who could play dangerous games.
