Chapter 31 - CHAPTER 30 — A Night of Confessions

The night was unusually quiet.

No wind.

No rustling leaves.

No distant footsteps.

Just Stillness.

Lin Yue sat by the window of her chamber, the moonlight spilling across the floor like silver silk. She traced the rim of her teacup absentmindedly, her thoughts drifting back to the emperor's words in the Hidden Orchid Pavilion.

"You matter to me."

She had heard many things in the palace — whispers, threats, warnings — but never something that made her heart tremble the way those words did.

A soft knock broke the silence.

Before she could answer, the door slid open.

The emperor stepped inside.

Not in his imperial robes.

Not with guards.

Not with attendants.

Just him.

Lin Yue stood quickly. "Your Majesty—"

"No titles tonight," he said gently, closing the door behind him.

Her breath caught.

He only said that when he wanted to speak honestly.

He walked toward her slowly, as if unsure how close he was allowed to come.

It was strange — he commanded an empire, yet with her, he moved carefully.

"May I sit?" he asked.

Lin Yue nodded. "Of course."

He sat beside her at the low table, the lantern between them casting warm light across his face.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he exhaled softly.

"I couldn't sleep."

Lin Yue looked at him. "Because of the scroll incident?"

"No," he said. "Because of you."

Her heart skipped.

He continued, voice low.

"I keep thinking about what I told you earlier. About my past. About trust. About… everything."

Lin Yue folded her hands in her lap. "You didn't have to tell me those things."

"I did," he said. "Because you're the only person I want to tell."

Silence settled again — not heavy, but warm.

Lin Yue spoke softly.

"I've never had anyone confide in me before. Not like that."

He turned to her. "And how did it make you feel?"

She hesitated.

"Seen."

His expression softened. "Good."

He leaned back slightly, studying her face.

"You're different from everyone else in this palace," he said. "They hide behind masks. You don't."

Lin Yue lowered her gaze. "Sometimes I think I should."

"No," he said firmly. "Don't change. Not for them. Not for me."

She looked up, surprised.

He continued, voice quieter now.

"I don't want a perfect consort. I don't want someone who pretends. I want someone real."

Lin Yue's chest tightened.

"I don't know how to be anything else."

"That's why I…"

He stopped, searching for the right words.

"…why I keep coming back here."

Her breath trembled.

He wasn't speaking as an emperor.

He wasn't speaking as a ruler.

He was speaking as a man.

Lin Yue swallowed. "I don't know what I'm supposed to be to you."

He leaned forward slightly, his voice barely above a whisper.

"You're someone I trust. Someone I care for. Someone I want beside me."

Her pulse quickened.

He reached out slowly — giving her time to pull away — and gently took her hand.

His touch was warm.

Steady.

Careful.

"Lin Yue," he said softly, "I don't want to face this palace alone anymore."

She looked into his eyes — honest, vulnerable, unguarded.

And she answered without fear.

"You won't."

His shoulders relaxed, as if a weight had lifted.

He held her hand a moment longer, then released it gently, as if afraid to break something fragile.

"Thank you," he murmured.

Lin Yue shook her head. "You don't need to thank me."

"I do," he said. "Because you're the only person who sees me… not the emperor, but the man."

The lantern flickered between them, casting soft shadows across their faces.

For the first time, Lin Yue felt something shift inside her — not just affection, not just loyalty.

Something deeper.

Something steady.

Something that frightened her and comforted her at the same time.

She whispered, "I'm glad you came tonight."

He smiled — a small, quiet smile she had never seen before.

"So am I."

They sat together in silence, hands close but not touching, hearts closer than ever.

A night of confessions.

A night of truth.

A night that would change everything.
