Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: The Way it starts to feel like yours

It settled quietly after that.

Not in a way I could point to, not in a way I could explain—but something changed. The resistance that had been there before, constant and exhausting, wasn't as loud anymore. It didn't disappear. It just… stopped controlling everything.

And that was worse.

Because now I had nothing to hide behind.

"You're quiet again."

I let out a small breath. "You say that like it's unusual."

"It is."

I glanced at Kairo. "You've said that before."

"And it's still true."

I shook my head slightly, but I didn't argue. There wasn't much left to argue about anymore. Not when most of it had already been decided.

"You stopped thinking about leaving," he said.

I didn't respond immediately.

"…Yes."

The word came easily.

Too easily.

"And you're not questioning it anymore."

"That's not true," I replied. "I still think about it."

"But you're not doubting it."

Silence.

Because that part—

Was true.

"I guess not," I admitted.

Kairo watched me carefully, like he was measuring the weight of that answer.

"You accepted it," he said.

"I told you," I replied, "I'm just not rejecting it anymore."

"That's the same thing."

"No," I said. "It just means I stopped fighting it."

"Why?"

I hesitated.

Because the answer wasn't simple.

"…Because it's exhausting," I said.

Silence.

Then—

"That's not the real reason."

I sighed. "You really don't let anything go."

"No."

"Then say it."

A pause.

Then

"You stayed because you wanted to."

My chest tightened again.

Not as sharply as before.

But enough.

"That's not the only reason."

"It's the one that matters."

I looked away. "You always say that."

"Because it's true."

Silence followed.

But it didn't feel heavy anymore.

It felt… normal.

That word again.

Normal.

"You're more comfortable," Kairo said.

I frowned slightly. "You keep pointing that out."

"Because you keep denying it."

"I'm not denying it," I said. "I just don't like it."

"Why?"

"Because comfort makes things harder to leave."

"You're not leaving."

"That's not the point."

"It is."

I let out a quiet breath. "You really don't see anything beyond that, do you?"

"I see what matters."

"And what doesn't?"

"What doesn't change the outcome."

I shook my head slightly. "You simplify everything too much."

"And you complicate everything too much."

"That's because I actually think about things."

"So do I."

"Then how do you make it seem so easy?" I asked.

A pause.

Then

"Because I don't question what I've already decided."

That answer settled deeper than I expected.

I leaned back slightly, letting out a slow breath.

"I wish I could do that."

"You don't need to."

"I do," I said. "Because I'm still trying to understand this."

"You won't."

"That's not helpful."

"It's accurate."

I shook my head again, but this time there was no frustration behind it.

Just… acceptance.

Another pause.

Then—

"You're still thinking about him," Kairo said.

I didn't deny it. "A little."

"That will fade."

"I know."

"But you don't want it to."

I glanced at him. "You really notice everything."

"Yes."

I exhaled softly. "I don't want it to disappear completely."

"Why?"

"Because it reminds me this wasn't simple," I said. "That it mattered."

Silence.

"It didn't change anything," he replied.

"I know," I said. "But it still mattered."

He didn't argue.

Which meant he accepted it.

In his own way.

"You're settling into this," he said.

I frowned slightly. "That sounds worse than it should."

"It's not."

"It feels like it is."

"Why?"

"Because it means I'm getting used to something I didn't choose at first."

"You chose it now."

"That doesn't erase the beginning."

"It doesn't need to."

I looked at him. "You really don't care about how things start, do you?"

"I care about how they end."

"And this?" I asked.

A pause.

Then

"It hasn't ended."

That answer lingered.

Longer than I expected.

"Then what is it?" I asked quietly.

Silence.

Then

"It's ongoing."

I let out a small breath. "That's not an answer."

"It is."

"No, it's not," I said. "That's just avoiding it."

"I'm not avoiding anything."

"You are."

He didn't respond to that.

Which meant I hit something again.

"I don't know what this is," I admitted.

The words came out quieter than I expected.

More honest.

More real.

Kairo stepped closer.

Not sudden.

Not forceful.

Just enough to close the distance again.

"You don't need to define it," he said.

"I do."

"No."

"Yes," I insisted. "Because that's how I make sense of things."

"This isn't something you explain."

"Then what is it?"

A pause.

Then

"It's something you stay in."

That answer again.

But this time

It felt different.

Less frustrating.

More… real.

I exhaled slowly, running a hand through my hair.

"This still feels insane."

"Yes."

"And you're fine with that?"

"Yes."

I glanced at him. "You really don't question anything."

"I already did."

"And?"

"And I still chose you."

My chest tightened.

That answer

It didn't hit the same way it used to.

It wasn't overwhelming.

It wasn't confusing.

It just… stayed.

Quiet.

Certain.

Real.

"You're not leaving," Kairo said.

I swallowed.

"…No."

And this time—

There was no hesitation at all.
