Chapter 3 - Roots in the Dark

📖 Chapter 3: Roots in the Dark

The moment he moved—

The forest split.

Roronoa Zoro appeared in front of Orochimaru, his blade already cutting through the air with deadly force.

Slash!

The strike was clean.

Precise.

Fast enough to kill most opponents instantly.

But—

Nothing.

The sword passed through empty space as if Orochimaru had never been there.

A voice whispered behind him—

"You're improving…"

Zoro's eyes sharpened instantly.

His body reacted before his thoughts.

He turned—

Too late.

Boom!

A violent force struck his side.

The impact crushed the air out of his lungs.

His body was launched across the forest, crashing through thick tree trunks.

Wood shattered.

Leaves exploded into the air.

The ground cracked beneath him as he slammed into it.

---

"Tch…!"

Zoro pushed himself up slowly, one hand pressing against the ground.

His breathing grew heavier.

Not uncontrolled—

But heavier.

"…He's fast."

Faster than before.

Stronger.

Smarter.

Every movement calculated.

Every attack perfectly timed.

---

Orochimaru stood calmly in the distance.

Watching him.

Studying him.

Like a scientist observing a rare specimen.

"…Not just speed," Zoro thought.

"…He's reading me."

---

A brief silence filled the battlefield.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

Then—

Zoro exhaled slowly.

"…Fine."

---

If speed wasn't enough—

Then he would change.

---

His stance lowered.

More stable.

More grounded.

His feet dug into the earth.

His grip tightened slightly around his sword.

His breathing slowed.

In.

Out.

In.

Out.

---

Everything around him began to disappear.

The distant screams.

The chaos of the forest.

The pressure in the air.

All of it faded.

---

Only one thing remained.

His target.

---

Orochimaru's smile widened slightly.

"…Oh?"

---

Zoro vanished again.

But this time—

There was no wasted movement.

No hesitation.

No unnecessary force.

Only precision.

---

Clang!

---

Steel met resistance.

His blade stopped inches from Orochimaru's neck.

Blocked.

Clean.

Perfect timing.

---

For the first time—

Orochimaru had to defend.

---

Silence.

---

Then—

A quiet laugh escaped him.

"…Interesting."

---

Zoro's voice dropped.

Cold.

Sharp.

"You talk too much."

---

He pushed forward.

Crack!

The ground beneath them shattered under the pressure of their clash.

Air trembled.

Dust lifted.

---

But suddenly—

A snake shot forward.

Fast.

Too fast to fully track.

---

It wrapped around Zoro's arm.

"Tch—!"

---

Another snake followed.

Then another.

Then more.

---

In seconds—

His body was restrained.

Locked in place.

---

Orochimaru stepped closer.

Calm.

Completely in control.

---

"You rely on instinct…"

He leaned forward slightly.

His golden eyes narrowed.

"…but you lack control."

---

Zoro's muscles tensed violently.

Veins rose along his arms.

His grip tightened.

"…Then I'll cut through it."

---

Steel flashed.

---

Slash!

---

The snakes were severed instantly.

Clean.

Effortless.

---

Zoro broke free—

But—

A hand grabbed his face.

---

"…Caught you."

---

Boom!

---

His body slammed into the ground again.

Harder this time.

The impact sent a shockwave through the forest floor.

Cracks spread outward.

Dust rose once more.

---

Silence.

Heavy.

Thick.

---

Then—

A voice.

Low.

Steady.

---

"…I'm getting used to this."

---

Orochimaru paused.

---

From within the dust—

Zoro stood up again.

Slowly.

Step by step.

---

Blood ran down his forehead.

His clothes were torn.

His breathing heavier.

But his eyes—

Sharper.

Colder.

More focused than before.

---

Something had changed.

---

The air around him trembled.

Not full chakra control.

Not yet.

But close.

---

Adaptation.

---

A strange pressure leaked from his body.

Unstable.

Wild.

Growing stronger with each second.

---

Leaves shook violently.

Branches creaked.

Even the ground beneath him reacted.

---

Orochimaru's smile deepened.

"…Now this is getting interesting."

---

But then—

He stopped.

---

His eyes shifted.

Toward the trees.

---

Zoro felt it too.

His grip tightened instinctively.

"…More?"

---

But this presence was different.

Completely different.

---

Not one.

Multiple.

---

Hidden.

Silent.

Disciplined.

---

No killing intent.

No wasted emotion.

Only control.

---

A cold silence spread across the forest.

Calculated.

Dangerous.

---

From the shadows—

A figure stepped forward.

Mask.

Dark uniform.

---

Then another.

And another.

---

They surrounded the area without making a sound.

Like ghosts.

---

Orochimaru chuckled softly.

"…So he noticed as well."

---

One of them spoke.

Cold.

Empty.

"This area is now under our control."

---

Zoro frowned slightly.

"…Who the hell are you?"

---

No answer.

---

Another voice echoed.

"Target confirmed."

---

A pause.

---

"He will come with us."

---

Zoro's eyes narrowed.

"…I don't remember agreeing to anything."

---

The masked figure looked at him.

Emotionless.

"You don't need to."

---

The air exploded with tension.

---

Orochimaru smiled.

Amused.

"…How troublesome."

---

His gaze lingered on Zoro.

Longer this time.

"…It seems you've attracted attention."

---

Zoro clicked his tongue.

"Tch… figures."

---

Silence.

---

Then—

One of them stepped forward.

---

"You have two choices."

---

"Come willingly…"

---

"Or be taken."

---

Zoro slowly raised his sword.

The blade reflected faint light.

Cold.

Deadly.

---

"…Try it."

---

The forest froze.

---

For a single moment—

Everything stopped.

---

Then—

---

A new presence appeared.

---

High above.

Hidden.

Watching.

---

Itachi Uchiha.

---

Silent.

Calm.

Unreadable.

---

A faint wind passed through the trees.

Leaves shifted.

---

But his gaze—

Never moved.

---

"…Interesting."

---

His eyes remained locked on Zoro.

As if seeing something deeper.

Something dangerous.

Something that could change everything.

---

Then—

His gaze shifted slightly.

---

Toward the masked group.

---

Recognition.

---

"…Root."

---

And for the first time—

The air grew heavier.

---

Because now—

This was no longer just a fight.

---

This…

Was something bigger.
