The Morning After
The expedition spent one more morning within the restored city.
For the first time in generations, the people of Lyrathis could see their own city illuminated by Technomagik once again.
The great central tower glowed against the morning sky.
Children gathered in the streets.
Engineers repaired old machines.
Farmers began discussing how to use the restored irrigation systems.
The expedition had not conquered the city.
They had simply helped awaken what was already there.
Sorion stood at the edge of the eastern district, looking toward the distant mountains.
His bronze compass remained strangely active.
The needle pointed east.
But there was no road.
A Map That Should Not Exist
Inside the restored archive, Lirion and Eara Voss examined the ancient map recovered from the city's memory chamber.
It showed the Twelve Cities.
Borealis.
Lyrathis.
The distant floating cities.
Veil-Gate networks.
Airship routes.
Ancient settlements.
But one line confused them.
A road extended from Lyrathis toward the east.
It crossed territory that modern maps showed as completely impassable.
Then it simply stopped.
Eara frowned.
"There's no road there."
Lirion enlarged the projection.
"There was."
"When?"
"Before the First War."
Sorion entered the chamber.
He immediately felt the strange vibration from his compass.
Lirion looked at him.
"You feel it too?"
Sorion nodded.
"Something is underneath that road."
The Decision
Dorion gathered the expedition leaders.
The eastern route was discussed carefully.
Some wanted to return to Aurion.
Others wanted to follow the newly discovered network.
Dorion listened to everyone.
Finally, he looked toward Sorion.
"What do you think?"
Sorion looked at the map.
"I don't know where it leads."
Dorion smiled.
"That's not what I asked."
Sorion looked toward the eastern horizon.
"I think we're supposed to find out."
The decision was made.
The expedition would continue.
Leaving Lyrathis
The citizens gathered at the eastern gate.
There were no grand ceremonies.
No royal procession.
Just ordinary people saying goodbye to travelers who had briefly become part of their lives.
Eara stood beside Lirion.
"Think they'll be alright?"
Lirion looked back at the restored city.
"They've survived for centuries."
He smiled.
"Now they have electricity."
Eara laughed.
"Technomagik."
"Right."
"Don't call it electricity."
"Sorry."
The Vanishing Road
Beyond Lyrathis, civilization slowly disappeared.
Fields became grassland.
Grassland became forest.
The ancient road appeared in fragments.
Sometimes they discovered a stone marker.
Sometimes an old bridge.
Sometimes nothing at all.
Sorion occasionally stopped.
He could sense memories beneath the earth.
But they were faint.
Incomplete.
Like pages torn from a book.
He could see travelers.
Ancient caravans.
Technomagik machines.
Children playing beside the road.
Then everything vanished.
Sorion opened his eyes.
"Someone erased this place."
Lirion looked at him.
"Oblivion?"
Sorion shook his head.
"No."
He touched the ground.
"This is older."
The Broken Bridge
By late afternoon, the expedition reached a massive gorge.
The ancient road ended at the edge.
Across the gap stood the remains of a bridge.
Only three sections remained.
The rest had collapsed into the darkness below.
Nara Elsen studied the ruins.
"This bridge used to cross the entire gorge."
Dorion looked down.
"Can we repair it?"
Lirion scanned the structure.
"Not safely."
Then Sorion noticed something.
A faint bronze glow beneath the bridge.
He walked closer.
The compass began pulsing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
A hidden symbol appeared on the stone.
ORINTHAL ORIGIN NETWORK
Lirion stared.
"The Origin Network..."
Eara looked at him.
"You know what that means?"
"Not yet."
The Hidden Mechanism
Lirion searched the bridge supports.
He found an ancient control panel buried beneath layers of stone.
The device still had power.
But the activation sequence was missing.
Sorion placed his hand against it.
His vision changed.
He saw the bridge as it once was.
Thousands of travelers crossing it.
Machines carrying supplies.
Airships flying overhead.
Then...
the bridge suddenly disappeared.
Not collapsed.
Disappeared.
The land itself seemed to swallow it.
Sorion pulled his hand away.
"It wasn't destroyed."
Dorion stepped closer.
"What happened?"
Sorion looked toward the gorge.
"It was hidden."
The Road Beneath
Lirion began examining the ground.
He noticed something unusual.
"The bridge isn't supposed to be above the gorge."
"What?"
"The original road continues underneath us."
The expedition cleared the vegetation.
Then the earth cracked.
A section of stone sank.
Ancient metal appeared beneath the soil.
A staircase descended into darkness.
Everyone became silent.
Bardin looked down.
"Well..."
He adjusted his instrument.
"That's definitely not on the map."
The Descent
The expedition descended carefully.
Torches illuminated ancient walls.
The deeper they went...
the older the architecture became.
The walls were not decorated with symbols of kings.
There were no statues.
No monuments.
Instead, there were diagrams.
Machines.
Battery systems.
Veil Gates.
Airships.
Floating cities.
Organic Technomagik systems.
The entire history of Orinthal civilization had been recorded underground.
Lirion stared in wonder.
"They documented everything."
Sorion quietly answered:
"Almost everything."
The Silent City
The staircase opened into an enormous underground chamber.
Everyone stopped.
Below them stretched an entire city.
Not ruins.
Not rubble.
A functioning ancient city.
Lights were dormant.
Machines stood motionless.
Airship docks lined the distant walls.
Massive Technomagik towers disappeared into the cavern ceiling.
Eara whispered:
"How long has this been here?"
Lirion couldn't answer.
Sorion looked at his compass.
The needle pointed toward the center of the city.
A single word appeared on its surface.
ORIGIN
Dorion looked at the others.
"We found another city."
Sorion shook his head.
"No."
He stared into the darkness.
"This is something else."
The First Awakening
The expedition entered the city.
Their footsteps echoed.
Then...
one small crystal illuminated.
Then another.
Then another.
A chain of blue light spread through the streets.
Ancient machines began moving.
Not attacking.
Working.
Maintenance drones emerged from storage chambers.
Small mechanical workers began repairing damaged infrastructure.
An ancient transport platform activated.
The city was waking.
Lirion slowly smiled.
"They've been waiting for someone."
Suddenly...
every crystal turned violet.
The machines stopped.
A voice echoed through the underground city.
"MEMORY RESONANCE DETECTED."
Sorion froze.
Another message followed:
"IDENTITY: UNKNOWN."
Then:
"ORIGIN NETWORK ACCESS: DENIED."
The entire city went dark.
The Door
At the center of the city stood an enormous circular door.
Ancient symbols surrounded it.
Sorion approached.
The bronze compass began vibrating violently.
He placed his hand against the door.
Nothing.
Then a faint inscription appeared:
THOSE WHO REMEMBER MAY ENTER.
Sorion stared at it.
Lirion whispered:
"Can you open it?"
Sorion looked at his brothers.
Then back at the door.
"I don't know."
He placed his palm against the ancient surface again.
This time...
the door responded.
A deep mechanical sound echoed through the city.
BOOOOOOM.
The door began opening.
Beyond it was an impossibly long road disappearing beneath the earth.
And far in the distance...
something enormous awakened.
Ending
A voice emerged from the darkness.
Not human.
Not mechanical.
Ancient.
"The road has found its travelers."
Sorion stepped forward.
The others followed.
Behind them, the underground city slowly awakened.
Ahead...
the forgotten road continued.
Not toward another Lost City.
Not toward Aurion.
But toward something that existed before the Twelve Cities were ever separated.
Sorion looked at the compass.
The word ORIGIN remained illuminated.
He whispered:
"Let's find out what they were trying to hide."
The expedition entered the darkness.
Behind them...
the ancient door closed.
