Chapter 19 - Nothing Was by Chance

Veronica knew something was wrong before she even stepped inside.

The house felt… different.

Too quiet.

But not the usual kind of quiet.

It was the kind that felt like it was waiting for something.

She closed the door behind her slowly, dropping her bag onto the couch without even noticing.

"Leon?"

No answer.

She took a few steps into the living room.

Her heart was still racing from the meeting with Daniel.

But this…

This was something else.

"Leon?"

"Here."

His voice came from the office.

Calm.

But… different.

Veronica walked toward it.

When she stepped inside, she found Leon standing by the desk.

Arms crossed.

Eyes fixed on her.

And for the first time since she met him…

He wasn't hiding anything.

"You followed me?" she asked, directly.

Leon didn't deny it.

"Yes."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Veronica let out a dry, humorless laugh.

"Of course you did."

"I told you you wouldn't go alone."

"And I went anyway."

"I know."

His tone wasn't angry.

It was… too controlled.

And that made it worse.

"Well?" she crossed her arms. "Going to tell me what you thought of the conversation?"

Leon didn't answer right away.

He simply walked to the desk.

Picked something up.

And placed it in front of her.

A folder.

Veronica frowned.

"What is this?"

"Open it."

She hesitated.

But opened it.

Pages.

Documents.

Signatures.

And then…

She saw it.

Her father's name.

Again.

But this time… it wasn't just that.

Other names.

Dates.

Companies.

And a symbol.

A discreet seal in the corner of the page.

The same mark on every document.

"What is this…?" her voice came out quieter.

"Proof."

Her heart started pounding harder.

"Proof of what?"

Leon looked straight at her.

"That your father wasn't just part of the fund."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Suffocating.

"He helped create it."

The world seemed to stop.

"No…"

"Yes."

She shook her head.

"This is wrong."

"It isn't."

"You can't know that."

"I do."

"How?!"

Her voice rose.

Her breathing uneven.

"Because my family was there too."

That shattered everything.

"What?"

Leon took a step closer.

"My father… and yours… built it together."

The silence exploded in the room.

Veronica stepped back.

As if it hit her physically.

"No…"

"It's the truth."

"You're lying."

"I have no reason to."

"You've had one from the beginning!"

Her voice trembled now.

"You knew everything!"

"Not everything."

"But enough!"

Silence fell again.

But this time… full of accusation.

"You used me."

The words came out low.

But heavy.

Irreversible.

Leon didn't respond immediately.

And that… made it worse.

"You used me," she repeated.

"I gave you a choice."

"No!"

She shook her head.

"You created a situation where I had no choice!"

Her breathing was faster now.

Eyes filled.

"My family was falling apart—I had no way out!"

"I helped."

"In exchange for control!"

Silence returned.

And this time…

It burned.

"You knew who I was from the start," she said.

"Yes."

"You knew about my father."

"Yes."

"You knew about the fund."

Leon hesitated.

One second.

But answered:

"Yes."

That was the breaking point.

Veronica stood still.

Frozen.

As if her body understood before her mind did.

"So… none of this was by chance."

Her voice came out hollow.

Leon didn't answer.

He didn't have to.

She already knew.

"The marriage…" she continued. "was part of this."

"It was a way to protect—"

"No."

She raised her hand.

"Don't try to change it now."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Cold.

"You put me in this."

"You were already in it."

"Without knowing!"

"Now you do."

She laughed.

But it was broken.

"And that makes it better?"

Leon didn't answer.

Because it didn't.

"Why now?" she asked.

Her voice lower.

More controlled.

But far more dangerous.

"Why tell me now?"

Leon took a moment.

But when he spoke…

He didn't look away.

"Because now you have to choose which side you're on."

Silence fell.

And stayed.

Veronica looked at him like she didn't recognize him.

"Side?"

"This isn't just about the past anymore."

"It never was."

"And now it's coming back."

She took a deep breath.

Trying to stay steady.

"You want me on your side."

"I want you to survive."

"At what cost?"

"The truth."

She went silent.

Then said:

"And what if I don't want either side?"

Leon answered without hesitation:

"Then both sides will crush you."

That wasn't a threat.

It was… a fact.

And that made it worse.

Leon's phone buzzed.

He looked at it.

His expression changed.

"What is it?" Veronica asked.

He didn't answer.

Just turned the screen toward her.

A news alert.

Urgent.

A company linked to the fund…

Had been attacked.

But not financially.

Physically.

Fire.

Total destruction.

Veronica felt her stomach twist.

"This… this is—"

"Escalation."

Silence fell.

Heavier than ever.

"This isn't just business anymore," she said.

"No."

"This is war."

Leon nodded.

"And it's just begun."

Veronica looked at him.

But it wasn't the same look as before.

Something had changed.

Broken.

"And you've been part of this from the start."

He didn't deny it.

"Yes."

Final silence fell between them.

But now…

It wasn't just tension.

It was distance.

Veronica took a step back.

Then another.

"I need time."

"Veronica—"

"No."

She shook her head.

"I need to think."

"It's not safe—"

"None of this is safe!"

Her voice broke.

But she held herself together.

"But I can't stay here right now."

Silence followed.

Leon didn't try to stop her.

But he didn't accept it either.

"If you leave—"

"I know."

"You might not come back."

She held his gaze.

And answered:

"I don't even know if I want to."

That hit.

But he didn't show it.

Veronica turned.

And walked out.

Without looking back.

The door closed.

And in that moment…

Everything changed.

It wasn't about finding the truth anymore.

It wasn't about protection anymore.

Now…

It was about choosing sides.

And surviving the consequences.
