The door shut behind them with a sharp sound.
Simple.
But to Veronica, it felt like a point of no return.
The kind of sound that leaves no room for regret.
She looked around.
The inside of the building was… too normal.
Clean reception. People walking. Phones ringing. Low conversations.
Nothing that exposed what really happened there.
And yet…
Everything felt wrong.
"This doesn't make sense…" she murmured.
Leon answered quietly:
"That's exactly why it does."
Daniel walked beside them, scanning everything.
"Perfect place to hide."
The receptionist looked up.
"Good morning."
Leon responded naturally:
"Good morning."
"How can I help you?"
Veronica felt her heart start racing.
But Leon didn't hesitate.
"We have a meeting with the administrative department."
The woman looked at her computer.
Typed something.
"Name?"
Leon paused for just a moment.
"Alighieri."
Veronica held her breath.
The receptionist looked up.
For a second…
Long enough to notice.
She recognized it.
But she didn't react like someone surprised.
She reacted like someone who… expected it.
"Alright," she said. "You can go up."
Veronica's stomach dropped.
She looked at Leon.
He noticed.
But said nothing.
Daniel noticed too.
"That was too easy," he murmured.
"I know," Leon replied.
The elevator doors closed.
Silence.
The kind that builds too fast.
"They know," Veronica said quietly.
"Probably," Leon replied.
"Then why let us in?"
Daniel crossed his arms.
"Because they want us to go up."
Her heart pounded harder.
"This is a trap."
Leon looked at the panel.
"Maybe."
"Maybe?" she turned to him. "Leon—"
"We're already inside."
Silence.
Irreversible.
The doors opened.
This floor was different.
Quieter.
Emptier.
No reception.
No movement.
Just a long hallway.
And closed doors.
"This isn't normal," Veronica said.
"No," Leon replied.
"So we're really doing this?"
Daniel stepped forward.
"We've come this far."
Veronica took a deep breath.
"Alright."
They started walking.
Each step echoed more than it should.
The air felt heavier.
Still.
Like the place wasn't used…
But prepared.
"Here," Leon said, stopping in front of a door.
No label.
No sign.
Nothing.
He looked at the two of them.
"Ready?"
Veronica didn't answer.
Neither did Daniel.
But they stayed.
That was answer enough.
Leon opened the door.
The room was dark.
Not completely.
But enough to hide details.
A table.
Some chairs.
And in the back…
A screen.
On.
Data scrolling.
Charts.
Names.
Numbers.
Veronica moved closer slowly.
"This is…"
"Financial system," Leon said.
Daniel stepped in.
"And not a small one."
Veronica stared at the screen.
She recognized names.
Companies.
Some…
Connected to her family's downfall.
Her chest tightened.
"All of this runs through here…"
Leon nodded.
"Part of it, yes."
"So this is the center?"
"One of them."
She ran a hand along her arm.
"This is bigger than I thought…"
"Much bigger," Daniel said.
And then—
"I told you… you were late."
The voice.
Behind them.
All three turned at once.
Him.
The man.
Standing in the doorway.
As if he had never left the game.
As if he had always been there.
Waiting.
"I figured you'd come," he said calmly.
Veronica felt her body lock.
"You—"
"Me."
He stepped into the room.
Closed the door.
No rush.
No tension.
Like someone already in control.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" he said, looking at the screen.
"Everything running perfectly."
"This ends today," Leon said.
The man smiled.
"No."
"It does."
"It doesn't."
He looked at Veronica.
"Because this isn't a company."
Silence.
"It's a system."
Veronica frowned.
"A system of what?"
He answered without hesitation:
"Control."
The air grew heavy.
"Who controls it?" Daniel asked.
The man laughed.
"You still don't get it?"
He walked slowly.
"There is no 'one.'"
"Then who?"
He stopped.
Looked at all three of them.
And said:
"The ones who always existed."
Silence.
But something felt off.
Very off.
"That doesn't answer anything," Veronica said.
"It does."
He tilted his head slightly.
"You're part of it."
Her heart raced.
"No."
"Yes."
"I never—"
"You didn't choose."
The words came sharp.
Direct.
"But you were placed."
The world seemed to tilt.
"My father…" she murmured.
"And his," the man said, looking at Leon.
"And others."
Silence.
Heavier than ever.
"So this never stopped," Daniel said.
"Never."
"And you?"
The man smiled.
"I'm just… balancing things."
"That's not balance," Leon said.
"It is to me."
Silence fell again.
"Do you know what your problem is?" the man asked.
None of them answered.
"You still think you can walk away from this."
The words echoed.
Heavy.
Final.
"We can," Veronica said.
He looked at her.
For a few seconds.
"Then try."
Silence.
And then—
A sound.
The door outside.
Footsteps.
More than one.
Leon reacted first.
"We're out of time."
Daniel looked around.
"Exit?"
"Another door," the man said.
They looked at him.
"Why?" Veronica asked.
He shrugged.
"Because this isn't over yet."
Silence.
But there was no choice.
Leon opened the side door.
"Now."
They ran.
Footsteps behind them.
Closer.
Too close.
The hallway felt longer now.
Narrower.
Real.
"Move!" Daniel said.
Veronica ran.
No thinking.
No looking back.
Because now…
It was survival.
When they got outside…
The air felt different.
But not safe.
Never safe again.
They stopped.
Breathing hard.
Hearts racing.
"This…" Veronica said, trying to catch her breath,
"This isn't a group."
Leon looked at her.
"No."
Daniel added:
"It's something bigger."
She looked up.
And said:
"Then we're not fighting people."
Silence answered.
And Leon said:
"We're fighting the system."
And in that moment…
Everything changed again.
Because now…
They knew.
And there was no going back.
