Chapter 34 - Chapter 27 — Continued

 Part 2 — Cleared

The hour passed quickly.

Medical staff returned to run final scans, removing stabilizers and replacing them with lighter recovery supports. Castiel remained the last to be cleared, his shoulders still held in reinforced braces designed to limit movement.

The doctor finished the scan and nodded.

"You'll recover, but no combat for at least a few days."

Castiel gave a faint breath.

"...Understood."

June crossed his arms.

"Yeah, you're definitely not fighting anything."

Castiel glanced at him.

"...I wasn't planning to."

June smirked slightly.

"Good."

Meanwhile, David stood as the medic finished sealing the final bandage along his side.

"You pushed yourself too far," the medic said.

David didn't argue.

"You're cleared, but take it slow."

He nodded.

Nyra finished next, her arm now wrapped in a lighter brace.

Lucian and Mira had already been cleared.

They gathered outside the medical wing.

For the first time since returning—

They stood together again.

Gamma Squad.

June glanced around.

"...Feels weird not being attacked."

Mira looked toward him.

"It won't last."

June sighed.

"...Yeah, probably not."

Lucian checked the time.

"We should move."

Nyra nodded.

"Command won't wait."

They began walking down the academy corridor.

Cadets turned as they passed.

Whispers followed quietly.

"That's Gamma Squad…"

"They look like hell…"

"Weren't they missing…"

Lucian ignored it.

Mira ignored it.

Nyra ignored it.

June muttered quietly.

"...We're definitely getting attention."

Castiel walked carefully beside them, his movement slow but steady.

David remained quiet.

They reached the command wing.

The doors ahead stood closed.

Lucian stopped.

"Ready?"

June gave a faint breath.

"...No."

Mira nodded slightly.

Nyra stood calm.

Castiel straightened slightly.

David looked at the doors.

Then—

Lucian stepped forward.

The doors opened.

And they stepped inside.

Part 3 — Command Chamber

The doors slid open with a soft mechanical hum.

Gamma Squad stepped inside.

The command chamber was larger than most cadets ever saw, built in a circular design with layered platforms descending toward a central briefing floor. Screens lined the walls, displaying data streams, planetary maps, and system reports. The air carried a quiet tension, the kind that settled when decisions of consequence were about to be made.

Commander Vance stood at the center.

She wasn't alone.

Three additional officers stood nearby, their uniforms marked with higher command insignias. Their attention shifted immediately toward Gamma Squad as they entered.

June slowed slightly.

"...Yeah," he muttered under his breath. "This looks serious."

Lucian walked forward, posture straight and composed. The rest of Gamma Squad followed, forming a loose line across the central floor.

Commander Vance studied them carefully.

Even in silence, her gaze moved across each injury, each sign of exhaustion. Castiel's shoulder braces, David's bandaging, Nyra's arm support — nothing escaped her notice.

"Gamma Squad," she said calmly.

Lucian nodded.

"Commander."

Vance gestured slightly toward the officers behind her.

"High Command requested to be present."

June shifted slightly.

"...Of course they did."

One of the officers stepped forward. He was older, his expression measured but sharp.

"You encountered an unknown world," he said.

Lucian nodded.

"Yes."

"Explain."

Lucian began calmly, his voice steady as he recounted the events.

"Initial deployment interference separated the squad. Communications were disrupted. Environmental conditions were hostile. Creature classifications were inconsistent with known planetary data."

The officer nodded slightly.

"And the entity?"

Lucian glanced briefly toward David.

"God-tier classification."

The room fell noticeably quieter.

Another officer stepped forward.

"You're certain?"

David spoke this time.

"Yes."

His voice remained calm.

The officer studied him carefully.

"And the gate?"

Nyra answered.

"Ancient structure. It activated during the encounter."

Mira added quietly.

"It appeared defensive. The creature was protecting it."

Commander Vance folded her arms slightly.

"And the gate collapsed."

David nodded.

"Destroyed during escape."

Silence settled across the chamber.

June shifted slightly.

"...We barely made it."

The older officer studied them.

"Yet all of you survived."

Lucian nodded.

"Yes."

The officer exchanged a glance with Commander Vance.

Then he spoke quietly.

"That shouldn't have been possible."

No one disagreed.

Because they all knew how close it had been.

Commander Vance stepped forward again.

"This changes things."

Her gaze moved across the group.

"If one gate exists, then we must assume others exist."

The officers nodded in agreement.

Nyra glanced briefly toward David.

The same thought passed between them.

This wasn't over.

It had only just begun.

Part 4 — Questions

The command chamber remained quiet after Commander Vance's words.

The screens along the walls shifted, displaying fragments of data collected from Gamma Squad's recovered comm logs. A map of Earth rotated slowly across one display, marked with a blinking point where they had emerged from the cave.

The older officer stepped forward again, his gaze focused on the map.

"You're certain the gate collapsed completely?"

David nodded.

"Yes. The structure folded inward. The cave collapsed immediately after."

The officer studied him carefully.

"No residual energy?"

Mira answered this time.

"None that we observed. The entire structure was pulled inward."

Commander Vance glanced toward one of the displays.

"Recovery teams are already en route to the coordinates. We'll confirm once they arrive."

Lucian nodded.

"Understood."

Another officer stepped forward, younger but equally composed.

"The creature."

His eyes moved across the squad.

"Describe it."

The room grew quieter.

Nyra spoke first.

"Biological. Large-scale predator. Multiple limb structures."

June exhaled slowly.

"...And tentacles."

The officer raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Tentacles?"

Castiel spoke quietly, his voice still weaker than usual.

"Three primary appendages. Serpentine movement. Fanged tips designed for penetration and restraint."

The officer nodded slowly, absorbing the details.

"And you classified it as God-tier."

Lucian nodded.

"Yes."

The officer exchanged another glance with Commander Vance.

"This is the first confirmed God-tier encounter involving cadets."

June shifted slightly.

"...Yeah, we noticed."

Commander Vance ignored the comment, her focus remaining on the situation.

"And the planet?"

David answered.

"Unknown classification. No system designation."

The officer frowned slightly.

"No known planetary record?"

David shook his head.

"No."

The room grew quieter again.

The implications settled slowly.

Commander Vance stepped forward.

"If this planet exists outside known registry, then it wasn't meant to be accessed."

Nyra spoke quietly.

"But we accessed it anyway."

Vance nodded.

"Yes."

Another screen shifted, displaying a faint geological scan of the cave location.

"Recovery team approaching," one of the technicians said.

Everyone's attention shifted briefly toward the display.

The blinking signal moved closer.

Commander Vance folded her arms slightly.

"Until we confirm the site, we proceed under assumption."

Lucian nodded.

"Understood."

June leaned slightly, keeping his voice low.

"...You know this means we're going back out there eventually."

Mira glanced toward him.

"Yes."

Castiel gave a faint breath.

"...Next time… hopefully without a God-tier."

June nodded.

"Yeah. That would be nice."

Commander Vance looked back toward them.

"You're dismissed for now."

Lucian straightened.

"Yes, Commander."

Gamma Squad turned and began moving toward the exit.

As they stepped out of the chamber, the weight of the conversation followed them.

The academy corridors felt quieter than before.

Nyra glanced briefly toward David.

"That's not over."

David nodded.

"No."

Because now—

They knew something else existed.

And somewhere—

More gates might be waiting.

Part 5 — Ripples

The command wing doors slid shut behind them.

The corridor outside felt quieter, but not calm. The academy continued its normal rhythm, yet the weight of what they had just reported followed them into the halls.

Gamma Squad walked together, their pace slower now that the urgency had passed.

June exhaled quietly.

"...So we just told High Command we fought a God-tier monster."

Castiel gave a faint breath beside him.

"...When you say it like that…"

June shook his head.

"...Yeah."

Lucian remained composed, though his shoulders carried fatigue. Mira walked slightly ahead, her posture alert even within the academy's safety.

Nyra walked beside David.

"You think they'll investigate the cave?"

David nodded.

"They already are."

"And if they find something?"

David looked ahead.

"Then this gets bigger."

They turned down the dorm corridor.

Cadets slowed as they passed, whispers spreading quietly through the hall.

"They're back…"

"Gamma Squad…"

"They look injured…"

June muttered under his breath.

"...We're definitely getting attention."

Lucian ignored it.

Mira ignored it.

Nyra remained calm.

Castiel walked carefully, his shoulder braces restricting movement.

They reached the dorm section.

Here, the group slowed.

Their paths split.

Lucian stopped first.

"This is where we separate."

June nodded.

"Yeah."

Mira gave a slight nod.

Nyra glanced toward David briefly.

Castiel exhaled quietly.

"...Get some rest."

Lucian nodded once.

"You too."

June started walking toward his dorm.

"...Yeah… I think I'm going to sleep for a week."

Mira turned toward her own hallway.

Nyra lingered for a moment.

"You okay?" she asked David quietly.

David nodded.

"Yeah."

She gave a small nod.

"Rest."

She turned and walked down her corridor.

Castiel followed slowly toward his room, moving carefully.

Lucian left next.

David stood alone for a moment.

The hallway quieted.

Then he turned and walked toward his own dorm.

The academy felt calm again.

But beneath the calm—

Everything had changed.

Part 6 — Room C-7

The dorm corridor grew quieter as Gamma Squad separated.

Lucian turned down one hall.

Mira moved toward another.

June gave a tired wave before heading toward his own room.

Nyra lingered for a moment, glancing between David and Castiel.

"You two going to be okay?"

Castiel gave a faint breath.

"...We'll manage."

David nodded.

"Yeah."

Nyra gave a small nod before turning and walking down her corridor.

The hallway fell quiet.

David slowed slightly, matching Castiel's pace as they walked toward their dorm. Castiel's shoulder braces limited his movement, forcing him to keep his arms close to his sides.

"You should still be in medical," David said quietly.

Castiel gave a faint, tired breath.

"...Probably."

They reached their door.

Room C-7.

David stepped forward and opened it.

The room looked exactly as they had left it.

Two beds positioned on opposite sides.

Two desks.

Gear neatly stored.

The normalcy felt strange after everything they had just experienced.

Castiel stepped inside slowly.

"...Yeah… this feels weird."

David closed the door behind them.

Castiel moved carefully toward his bed, lowering himself slowly to avoid stressing his shoulders. Even that small movement made him wince.

"You shouldn't have left medical," David repeated.

Castiel gave a faint smile.

"...I didn't want to stay there."

David sat on his own bed, watching him.

Silence settled.

The quiet felt heavier now.

Castiel stared at the ceiling for a moment.

"...You almost didn't make it."

David didn't answer immediately.

"...You either."

Castiel exhaled slowly.

"...I meant what I said back there."

David glanced at him.

"...Which part."

Castiel's voice softened.

"When I told them to let me stay."

The room fell quiet again.

"I thought you were going to die," Castiel said quietly.

David leaned back slightly.

"...We didn't."

Castiel turned his head slightly toward him.

"...Still."

Silence settled again.

The tension from everything they had survived lingered between them.

Then—

Castiel gave a faint breath.

"...I'm glad you made it."

David nodded.

"Me too."

The room fell quiet again.

Outside, the academy continued its normal rhythm.

Inside Room C-7—

Two survivors finally rested.

And for now—

That was enough.

Part 7 — Quiet Conversations

Morning light filtered through the narrow window, casting soft shadows across the dorm room. The academy grounds outside were already active. Cadets moved between buildings, instructors crossed training fields, and distant announcements echoed faintly through the campus.

Inside Room C-7, everything felt slower.

Castiel lay on his bed, shoulders locked in stabilization braces that limited even small movements. The stillness clearly irritated him. He stared at the ceiling for a long moment before exhaling quietly.

"I hate this."

David looked up from where he sat at the edge of his bed.

"The braces?"

"Not being able to move," Castiel said, his voice calm but frustrated. "I feel useless."

David leaned back slightly.

"You nearly bled out. Resting isn't useless."

Castiel gave a faint breath that almost sounded like a quiet laugh.

"...You're telling me that?"

David didn't respond.

Castiel turned his head slightly toward him, wincing at the small movement.

"You're not exactly good at resting either."

"Still," David replied quietly.

Castiel studied him for a moment, then nodded faintly.

"Fair."

Silence settled again.

Outside, the sound of distant training echoed across the grounds. The steady rhythm of the academy felt strange after the chaos they had just survived.

Castiel broke the silence.

"That creature…"

David looked over.

"It wasn't just strong."

David nodded slowly.

"No."

Castiel's eyes remained fixed on the ceiling.

"I've fought things before. Strong things. But that…"

He paused, searching for the right words.

"...It felt different. Like we weren't meant to be there."

David understood immediately.

The pressure.

The instinctive danger.

The overwhelming presence.

"...Yeah," David said quietly.

Castiel turned his head slightly.

"You cut through it."

David shook his head.

"Not enough."

"It was enough," Castiel replied calmly. "You bought time."

Silence returned.

Castiel exhaled slowly.

"What bothers me most isn't the fight."

David waited.

Castiel's gaze shifted toward the window.

"It was guarding the gate."

The thought settled heavily in the room.

David nodded.

"Yeah."

Castiel continued quietly.

"That means it wasn't just wandering. It was placed there… or drawn there."

David leaned back slightly, considering it again.

"Someone built that gate."

Castiel nodded faintly.

"And something powerful enough to control or influence a God-tier creature…"

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

David looked toward the window.

"...That's the part that worries me."

Castiel gave a faint breath.

"Yeah."

Outside, the academy continued its normal routine. Cadets moved across the grounds. Training fields filled with activity. The world looked calm.

Inside Room C-7, the silence lingered.

Because both of them understood the same thing.

The unknown planet hadn't just been an accident.

Something bigger was out there.

And they had just survived their first encounter with it.

Part 8 — Interrupted Calm

The quiet lingered in Room C-7.

Outside, the academy had fully come alive. The sound of distant training echoed faintly through the walls, accompanied by the occasional announcement from overhead speakers. Sunlight filled the room now, warming the floor near the window.

Castiel shifted slightly, then stopped as pain flared across his shoulders. He exhaled slowly, frustration flickering across his expression before he forced himself to relax again.

"You know what's worse than not being able to fight?"

David glanced over.

"What?"

"Being stuck in bed while everyone else moves forward."

David leaned back slightly.

"You'll recover."

Castiel nodded faintly.

"I know. I just don't like waiting."

Silence settled again, but this time it felt lighter.

David looked toward the window, watching cadets moving across the training grounds below. Some ran drills. Others moved between buildings, talking casually. The normal rhythm of the academy felt distant compared to the chaos they had experienced.

Castiel followed his gaze.

"Feels strange, doesn't it?"

David nodded.

"Yeah."

"We almost died," Castiel said quietly. "And everything here just kept going."

David didn't answer immediately.

Because he had thought the same thing.

"It always does," he said finally.

Castiel gave a faint breath.

"Still."

The overhead speaker crackled softly.

"All cadets report to assigned training sectors."

The announcement faded.

Castiel glanced toward the ceiling.

"Guess we're missing training."

David gave a faint nod.

"You'll survive."

Castiel smirked slightly.

"I wasn't worried about me."

David looked over.

Castiel's expression softened slightly.

"Gamma Squad just fought a God-tier creature. Everyone's going to be talking about it."

David didn't seem concerned.

"Let them."

Castiel studied him for a moment.

"You really don't care?"

David shook his head slightly.

"No."

Castiel gave a faint breath.

"...Yeah. That sounds like you."

A soft knock interrupted them.

Both of them looked toward the door.

The door slid open.

June stepped inside, leaning casually against the frame. His expression looked more relaxed than before, though fatigue still lingered in his posture.

"You two alive?"

Castiel gave a faint smirk.

"Barely."

June stepped inside.

"Good. Because the academy is already buzzing."

David looked at him.

"About?"

June gave a quiet breath.

"About you. About all of us."

He stepped further into the room, glancing between them.

"Word spread fast. Missing squad. Unknown planet. Rescue team."

Castiel nodded slightly.

"Not surprising."

June leaned against the wall.

"Everyone's trying to figure out what happened."

David remained calm.

"They'll find out eventually."

June studied him for a moment.

"You really don't seem bothered."

David shook his head slightly.

"No."

June gave a faint smile.

"...Yeah. That tracks."

The quiet returned briefly.

Outside, the academy continued moving forward.

Inside Room C-7, Gamma Squad slowly adjusted to being back.

But the calm still felt temporary.

Because all three of them knew—

This was only the beginning.

 Part 9 — Uneasy Calm

Morning had fully settled over the academy.

Sunlight filtered through the tall dorm window, illuminating the clean lines of Room C-7. Outside, cadets crossed the training grounds in organized formations while distant impacts echoed from combat sectors. The steady rhythm of academy life had returned, unchanged and indifferent to what Gamma Squad had survived.

Inside the room, the calm felt fragile.

June leaned against the wall near the door, arms folded loosely, watching Castiel and David.

"You two look worse in daylight," he said.

Castiel gave a faint breath that almost passed for a laugh.

"That's reassuring."

June tilted his head slightly.

"I'm serious. You both look like you got dragged through a storm."

David remained quiet, sitting at the edge of his bed.

Castiel shifted slightly, then stopped as discomfort ran through his shoulders. He exhaled slowly, settling back again.

"Feels like it."

June glanced toward the window.

"The academy's already talking."

Castiel looked toward him.

"About what?"

"About us," June replied. "Missing squad. Rescue team. Command lockdown. People are trying to piece it together."

David lifted his gaze slightly.

"Let them."

June studied him for a moment.

"You really don't care?"

David shook his head.

"No."

Castiel looked toward the ceiling again.

"They'll speculate either way."

June nodded.

"...Yeah."

The room fell quiet.

Outside, a group of cadets ran drills across the training field. Their movements were sharp and controlled, completely unaware of how close Gamma Squad had come to not returning.

June spoke again, more quietly this time.

"It still feels strange."

Castiel turned his head slightly.

"What does?"

"We almost died," June said. "And now it's just another morning."

David watched the training field.

"That's how it works."

Castiel nodded faintly.

"The academy doesn't stop."

June exhaled slowly.

"...Still."

A soft knock interrupted the quiet.

All three of them looked toward the door.

June straightened slightly.

"You expecting someone?"

David shook his head.

The door slid open.

Nyra stepped inside.

Her gaze moved across the room, briefly assessing both David and Castiel before she stepped forward.

"You look worse than yesterday."

June smirked slightly.

"Good morning to you too."

Nyra ignored him, her attention shifting to David.

"The command wing is active."

Castiel frowned slightly.

"Already?"

Nyra nodded.

"Yes."

David studied her expression.

"About us?"

She hesitated for a moment.

"And more."

The room grew quieter.

June pushed off the wall.

"What kind of more?"

Nyra met David's eyes briefly before answering.

"Families."

The word settled heavily in the room.

Castiel's expression sharpened slightly.

"That was fast."

Nyra nodded.

"Faster than expected."

June ran a hand through his hair.

"...Which families?"

Nyra didn't answer immediately.

Her gaze moved between them.

"Several."

The quiet deepened.

Outside, the academy continued its normal rhythm.

Inside Room C-7, the atmosphere shifted.

Because when the Great Families began paying attention—

Things rarely stayed simple.

Part 10 — Gathering Shadows

The word lingered in the room.

Families.

The academy outside continued its steady rhythm, but inside Room C-7, the air felt heavier. The calm they had begun to settle into shifted again, replaced by quiet understanding.

June exhaled slowly.

"That didn't take long."

Nyra shook her head slightly.

"It never does when something unusual happens."

Castiel watched her carefully.

"What have you heard?"

Nyra stepped further into the room, resting lightly against the desk.

"Nothing official. Just movement. Command wing activity. Restricted communications. Family representatives contacting the academy."

David remained still.

"Which ones?"

Nyra hesitated.

"I don't know all of them yet."

June folded his arms.

"...That's never a good sign."

Castiel nodded faintly.

"No."

The silence stretched for a moment.

Outside, a squad of cadets passed below the window, their voices faint and distant. The normalcy of the academy felt disconnected from the quiet tension building inside the room.

Nyra continued.

"Whatever happened out there… it drew attention."

June gave a faint breath.

"Fighting a God-tier creature tends to do that."

Castiel shifted his gaze toward David.

"And surviving."

David didn't respond.

Nyra noticed the silence and studied him briefly.

"This doesn't change anything yet."

David shook his head slightly.

"No."

Castiel exhaled quietly.

"It will."

June nodded.

"...Yeah. It always does."

Another quiet settled.

Then—

A distant academy announcement echoed faintly through the hall.

"Cadet briefing scheduled in one hour."

June glanced toward the ceiling.

"...That's probably us."

Nyra nodded.

"Most likely."

Castiel shifted slightly again, then stopped as discomfort returned. He leaned back, frustration briefly crossing his expression.

"You should still be resting," Nyra said quietly.

"I am resting."

June gave him a look.

"You're literally arguing about resting."

Castiel gave a faint smirk.

"...I don't like being stuck."

David looked over.

"You'll recover."

Castiel nodded slightly.

"I know."

The quiet returned again.

But this time, it felt temporary.

Because somewhere beyond the academy—

Shadows were beginning to move.

Part 11 — Before the Shift

The room remained quiet after the announcement.

One hour.

The academy's usual sounds filtered faintly through the walls — distant combat drills, footsteps in the corridor, the quiet hum of systems running throughout the building.

June pushed off the wall and walked toward the window.

"So we get called in, families are moving, and no one's telling us anything yet."

Nyra folded her arms lightly.

"That usually means command is still figuring things out."

Castiel exhaled slowly.

"Or deciding what to tell us."

David remained seated, watching the training field outside.

Cadets moved through drills, their movements sharp and controlled. None of them looked toward the dorm building. None of them knew what Gamma Squad had just returned from.

June followed his gaze.

"They have no idea."

David shook his head slightly.

"No."

Castiel shifted slightly, careful of his shoulders.

"They'll know soon enough."

Nyra glanced toward him.

"Probably."

The silence returned again.

Then June straightened slightly.

"You think any of the Twelve already contacted command?"

Nyra didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Castiel nodded faintly.

"They always do."

David remained quiet.

Because he already understood what that meant.

When the Twelve started asking questions, answers followed.

Eventually.

The overhead announcement echoed again, clearer this time.

"Cadet briefing in thirty minutes."

June exhaled.

"Guess that's our cue."

Castiel shifted carefully, preparing to stand.

David stood first.

Nyra stepped toward the door.

The calm in the room faded.

Because whatever came next—

Would be the beginning of something bigger.
