Chapter 26 - Crossing the Threshold

The team moved quickly through the empty streets. The city felt different at night. It was quiet, but the quiet did not feel safe. Shadows seemed to stretch longer than usual, and every flicker of light made them tense. Elisa led the way, her ring glowing softly. She could feel the signal pulling them forward, guiding them, but also warning them.

Jenny stayed close behind, glancing around nervously. "I don't like this," she muttered. "It's too quiet. Way too quiet." Kevin gave her a small smile but did not speak. He could feel the tension too. Every instinct told him to be careful. Every fight so far had been dangerous, but this felt different.

They reached a small alley where the signal was strongest. The light from their rings illuminated the walls, casting long shadows. Elisa stopped and held up her hand. The signal was here. Not moving, just glowing faintly on the ground. Zoe knelt down to examine it, her fingers hovering over the energy. "It's alive," she said. "Not in the way we are, but it's aware. It knows we're here."

Stebin stepped forward, cracking his knuckles. "Well then, let's see what it wants." Louis shook his head. "We need to be careful. We don't know what this is capable of." Jake crouched slightly, ready to react at a moment's notice. "Then we stay alert. Eyes everywhere. Move slowly."

Elisa reached out and touched the signal with her hand. The energy surged through her instantly, a shock of power that made her knees buckle slightly. She held on and felt the presence behind it, watching, waiting. It was not angry yet. Not hostile. But it was testing them. She straightened and looked at the team. "It's a threshold," she said. "This is something we need to cross. Whatever is beyond this… it is the next part of the test."

Jenny frowned. "Great. Another test. Why can't it just send a letter?" Zoe smiled faintly. "Because this isn't about letters anymore. It's about power. About us. About what we're ready for." Kevin nodded. "Then we do it together. Step by step. No rushing."

Elisa's hand glowed brighter as the signal pulsed beneath it. She felt it in her chest, in her mind, as if the energy was speaking to her directly. She took a deep breath and nodded. "Everyone ready?"

One by one, the team stepped forward. Their rings reacted instantly, glowing in different colors. The air vibrated around them, heavy and electric. The moment they all reached the threshold, the energy surged, wrapping around them like a living thing.

It was not a fight. Not yet. But it was a warning. Something beyond this signal was waiting, and it would not be gentle.
