Chapter 32 - A Faint Light

The next few days felt different in a way none of them could properly explain. The base was still functioning as it always had, with systems running, training schedules continuing, and missions being monitored, but there was a quiet emptiness in the air. It was not loud or obvious, yet everyone could feel it. No one mentioned Elisa, but her absence was present in every corner of the place.

Jenny spent most of her time in the training room, trying to focus on something she could control. She stood alone in the center, staring at her hand as if it might give her answers. Her ring still responded, still carried power, but something about it felt weaker, or maybe it was just her state of mind. She closed her eyes and forced herself to concentrate. A faint glow appeared for a moment, flickering uncertainly before fading away. When she opened her eyes again, frustration settled in. She quietly admitted to herself that it was not enough. Kevin, who had been watching from the entrance for some time, finally stepped forward and told her she was pushing too hard. Jenny did not agree. In her mind, nothing she did felt like enough anymore. Kevin tried to remind her that she had not rested properly since the battle, but she dismissed the idea. Rest would not change what had happened. Kevin did not argue further, though it was clear he did not fully agree.

Elsewhere, Stebin struggled in his own way. He moved restlessly through the base, unable to stay still for more than a few seconds. Jake noticed this and calmly pointed out that pacing would not solve anything. Stebin stopped only briefly, frustrated by the lack of action. Sitting still made things worse, so Jake simply told him to train again. It was simple advice, but it gave Stebin something to do, and he left without another word.

In the lab, Zoe and Louis focused on something more concrete. They reviewed the data from the final battle again and again, searching for anything that did not make sense. Zoe eventually pointed out a strange pattern in the energy readings. It was not random, as it had first appeared, but controlled in some way they did not yet understand. The more she studied it, the more certain she became that the energy had not disappeared at all. Instead, it had moved. Louis questioned whether this meant Elisa could still be alive, but Zoe did not jump to conclusions. She simply stated that they did not yet understand what had truly happened.

Mira, meanwhile, stood alone in her office, holding Elisa's ring. It remained completely unchanged, dull and silent, as if all its power had vanished. She placed it carefully on the table, studying it with quiet concern. When Jenny entered the room and asked if anything had changed, Mira could only shake her head. Jenny stepped closer and looked at the ring herself, her expression thoughtful. She said it did not feel finished, as if something was missing from the situation. Mira did not immediately respond, but the idea clearly stayed with her.

By evening, the team gathered again, this time with more purpose. The silence that had filled the past few days began to shift into something else. Stebin was the first to speak, insisting that they needed a mission. Kevin questioned the timing, but Stebin argued that they could not remain stuck like this. Jake supported him, and soon Jenny agreed. When they turned to Mira, she informed them that there had been a disturbance earlier that day. What made it important was the type of energy involved. It was similar to what they had encountered during the battle. That alone was enough to change the mood of the room.

They prepared quickly, moving with a quiet focus that felt different from before. When they arrived at the location, the atmosphere immediately felt unusual. It was calm, but not natural. Zoe was the first to notice the energy, confirming that it matched what they had been tracking. Then, without warning, a faint light appeared in the distance. Everyone stopped, watching it carefully. Jenny felt something shift inside her as she stepped forward. The light flickered gently, almost as if it were unstable. For a brief moment, it seemed to take shape, though not clearly enough to fully recognize. Still, Jenny felt certain she knew what it was.

She whispered Elisa's name without thinking.

The light flickered once more and then disappeared completely, leaving nothing behind. The area returned to normal as if nothing had happened at all. For a few seconds, no one spoke. Stebin looked around, confused, while the others tried to process what they had just seen. Jenny remained still, her eyes fixed on the empty space where the light had been.

Finally, she spoke again, but this time her voice was steady. She said that Elisa was not gone. Zoe checked her readings once more and slowly agreed. The energy had been real, and it had not simply vanished. Kevin asked the question that everyone was thinking, but no one could answer it.

If Elisa was not gone, then where was she?

For the first time since the battle, they did not feel completely lost. There was still uncertainty, still confusion, but something else had returned as well.

Hope.
