Chapter 10 - The Necklace

by Guy de Maupassant

Mathilde Loisel was a beautiful woman born into a poor family. She always dreamed of luxury — grand houses, sparkling chandeliers, expensive dresses, and glittering jewels. But instead, she lived in a small apartment with her simple clerk husband.

One evening, her husband came home excited.

"I have wonderful news!" he said. "We are invited to a grand ball at the Ministry!"

Mathilde should have been happy. Instead, she was upset.

"I have nothing to wear," she said sadly.

Her husband gave her money he had saved to buy a beautiful dress. Mathilde was finally satisfied — until she realized she had no jewelry.

"I can't go without jewels," she cried.

Her husband suggested she borrow some from her wealthy friend, Madame Forestier.

Madame Forestier gladly lent her a stunning diamond necklace.

At the ball, Mathilde was the most beautiful woman there. Everyone admired her. She danced all night, feeling elegant and important.

But when she returned home, she looked in the mirror —

The necklace was gone.

Panic filled the room.

They searched everywhere. Nothing.

Too afraid to confess, they decided to replace it.

After visiting many jewelers, they found a necklace identical to the lost one.

The price was enormous.

To pay for it, they borrowed money — a lot of money. They signed loans with terrible interest. Then they returned the new necklace to Madame Forestier, who did not even inspect it carefully.

And so began ten years of hardship.

Mathilde worked tirelessly. She cleaned, cooked, washed clothes, and lived in poverty. Her beauty faded. Her hands became rough. Her husband worked late into the night to repay their debts.

After ten long years, they finally finished paying everything.

One day, Mathilde met Madame Forestier again. Nervously, she decided to tell the truth.

"You remember that necklace I borrowed?" she said. "I lost it. We replaced it. It took us ten years to pay for it."

Madame Forestier stared at her in shock.

"Oh, my poor friend," she said gently.

"My necklace was fake. It was worth almost nothing."

Mathilde stood frozen.

Ten years of suffering.

For something that wasn't even real.

✨ Moral: Sometimes pride and appearance cost us more than honesty ever would.
