Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 — The Door That Shouldn’t Exist

Silence.

For the first time since the chaos began, there was no sound of gunfire, no explosions, no footsteps chasing them.

Just silence.

Arin leaned against the cold metal wall, breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling like he had just run a marathon—which, honestly, felt pretty accurate.

"…Okay," he said between breaths, "I'm officially done running for today."

Maya stood a few steps ahead, still alert, her eyes scanning the darkness beyond the doorway they had just entered.

"We're not safe yet," she said.

Arin let out a weak laugh.

"Yeah, I figured. At this point, I'm assuming I'm never safe again."

The room they had entered was unlike anything they had seen so far.

It wasn't a tunnel.

It wasn't a station.

It was… something else.

The walls were smooth, metallic—but not rusted or broken like everything else underground. Instead, they looked almost new. Clean. Untouched by time.

Faint golden lines ran along the walls, pulsing softly like veins carrying energy through a living body.

Arin slowly stood up straighter.

"…Okay," he said quietly. "That's not creepy at all."

Maya stepped forward.

Her expression had changed.

She wasn't just cautious anymore.

She looked… uncertain.

"I've never seen this place before," she admitted.

Arin blinked.

"Wait. You mean this isn't part of your secret tunnel system?"

"No."

"Great," Arin muttered. "So we just ran into a random glowing mystery room. That always ends well."

He walked closer to the wall, studying the golden lines.

"They look like… circuits," he said.

"Not exactly," Maya replied.

"Then what?"

She hesitated.

"…Energy pathways."

Arin raised an eyebrow.

"That sounds like a fancy way of saying circuits."

Maya didn't argue.

Instead, she moved deeper into the room.

Arin followed.

The space opened up into a larger chamber.

At the center stood something that made Arin stop completely.

A door.

But not a normal door.

It was tall—at least three times his height.

Made of a smooth, dark material that seemed to absorb light instead of reflecting it.

And across its surface…

Glowing golden symbols.

The same ones that had appeared on the ground earlier when his power activated.

Arin felt his chest tighten.

"…That's new."

Maya stepped closer to the door.

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"This… shouldn't exist."

Arin crossed his arms.

"Yeah, I'm starting to hear that phrase a lot."

The symbols on the door pulsed faintly.

Almost like they were reacting.

To something.

Or someone.

Arin took a slow step forward.

The warmth in his chest returned instantly.

Stronger than before.

He winced slightly.

"Okay… yeah, I don't like that."

Maya turned to him.

"It's reacting to you."

"Why does everything react to me now?" Arin said. "I miss when I was just a normal guy who complained about homework."

The glow on the door grew brighter.

The symbols began shifting.

Moving.

Rearranging.

Arin's eyes widened.

"…It's changing."

Maya nodded slowly.

"It's recognizing you."

Arin pointed at himself.

"Why?! I didn't do anything!"

"You exist," she said.

"Yeah, that answer still doesn't help."

The ground beneath them vibrated slightly.

A low hum filled the chamber.

Arin took a step back.

"…Is it about to explode?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"No."

"Fantastic."

The door let out a deep, mechanical sound.

Like something ancient waking up after a long time.

The symbols aligned into a single pattern.

Then—

A thin line of light appeared in the center of the door.

It slowly widened.

The door was opening.

Arin stared in disbelief.

"…You've got to be kidding me."

Maya didn't move.

"Be careful."

"Careful?" Arin said. "That giant mystery door just opened because of me! I'm way past careful!"

The door opened fully.

Beyond it—

Darkness.

But not normal darkness.

This felt… different.

Deeper.

Endless.

Arin felt a strange pull.

Like something inside that darkness was calling him.

Waiting.

Watching.

He swallowed.

"…I don't think we should go in there."

Maya didn't respond immediately.

Then she said quietly,

"We don't have another way out."

Arin looked back at the door they came from.

Still closed.

Still silent.

But somehow, he knew—

It wouldn't stay that way.

"They'll find us again," he said.

"Yes."

He looked at the dark doorway again.

"…And whatever's in there might be worse."

Maya met his eyes.

"Yes."

Arin sighed.

"Great. So either we get caught… or we walk into the unknown."

Maya nodded.

"That's about right."

Arin shook his head.

"My life has officially become a terrible decision simulator."

He took a deep breath.

Then stepped toward the door.

The moment he crossed the threshold—

The golden light around him flickered slightly.

The warmth in his chest pulsed.

Stronger.

More alive.

Maya followed close behind.

The moment both of them entered—

The door slammed shut behind them.

The sound echoed loudly.

Arin jumped.

"Okay, I did NOT like that."

Darkness surrounded them completely.

For a moment, they couldn't see anything.

Then—

Soft golden light began to appear beneath their feet.

The ground itself started glowing.

Lines forming again.

Symbols.

The same patterns.

Guiding them.

Arin looked down.

"…It's happening again."

Maya nodded.

"It's leading us."

"Yeah, but where?"

Before she could answer—

The voice returned.

Clearer than ever.

Stronger.

"Welcome…"

Arin froze.

"…You heard that, right?"

Maya shook her head.

"No."

Arin's heart started pounding.

"Okay, that's not good."

The voice echoed again.

Inside his mind.

"Come forward…"

Arin took a slow step.

He didn't mean to.

His body just… moved.

"Arin," Maya said sharply. "What are you doing?"

"I… don't know."

Another step.

The glowing path extended deeper into the darkness.

Something shifted ahead.

A shape.

Tall.

Still.

Watching.

Arin's breathing became uneven.

"…There's something there."

Maya tensed.

"I can't see anything."

Arin could.

Barely.

A silhouette.

Not human.

Not machine.

Something else.

The air felt heavier.

Colder.

Then—

The figure moved.

Just slightly.

Arin's heart skipped.

"…Yeah, that's definitely not friendly."

The golden light around him flared suddenly.

Reacting.

Protecting.

The voice spoke again.

But this time—

It wasn't calm.

It was warning him.

"Not yet…"

Arin stopped walking.

"What does that mean?"

The figure ahead took another step.

Closer now.

The darkness shifted around it.

Almost like it was part of it.

Maya stepped in front of Arin.

"Stay back."

Arin didn't argue.

For once.

Because something deep inside him—

Something instinctive—

Was telling him the same thing.

The figure raised its arm slowly.

The air around them distorted.

Energy gathered.

Dark.

Heavy.

Opposite of Arin's golden light.

Arin swallowed.

"…Yeah."

He took a step back.

"I think we just made a really bad decision."

The golden light around him flared again.

Brighter.

Stronger.

As if preparing.

As if responding.

The two energies faced each other in silence.

Light and darkness.

Arin and whatever stood before him.

And in that moment—

He realized something terrifying.

This place wasn't just a path.

It was a test.

And he had just walked straight into it.

And the chapter ends with Arin realizing…

Not everything connected to Santa is good.
