As soon as they stepped past the massive iron gates of the Botanical Garden, the wild, earthy scent of the ancient forest hit Aryan and Megha. The smell of damp soil and unknown vines carried a strange, intoxicating magic. While Professor Sen was busy teaching the scientific names of plants to the students in the front row, Aryan stole a quick glance at Megha. Her eyes danced with the same restless energy. They both knew that if they stayed with the crowd memorizing Latin names, the true mystery of the forest would remain out of reach. Seizing the moment, they slipped away down an overgrown path to the right, wading through knee-high grass and wild blossoms.
Walking further in, they reached a depth where the sky was completely hidden by the canopy of giant trees. Sunlight filtered through the leaves like thin, golden threads. Megha quickly pulled a notebook from her bag and started sketching a strangely shaped fern.
"Aryan, look! Don't these leaves look just like a fox's ears?" Megha's face lit up with innocent wonder. Aryan wasn't looking at the drawing; he was mesmerized by her hands as she sketched. In the quiet of the forest, the only sounds were the crunch of dry leaves beneath their feet and the steady hum of crickets, creating a magical melody.
Suddenly, Aryan realized how late it was getting. Feeling a slight pang of hunger, he said softly, "Megha, let's head back to the dining hall. If the professor doesn't see us, we'll be in trouble."
When they reached the dining hall, the delicious aromas made them twice as hungry. The menu was a feast: fragrant basmati rice, rich and spicy chicken curry, and for the vegetarians, melt-in-the-mouth paneer butter masala. In the corner sat bright red tomato chutney and crispy papadums. Amidst the laughter of their classmates and the clinking of plates, Megha leaned close to Aryan's ear. "Listen," she whispered, "when everyone is stuck in that stuffy lab looking at slides after lunch, we'll slip away again. We still haven't seen the blue flowers across the lake."
The warmth of her breath against his neck sent a sudden thrill through Ayan's heart.
After lunch, as everyone followed Professor Sen into the closed laboratory, Ayan and Megha quietly ducked behind the bright bougainvillea bushes and disappeared back into the forest's labyrinth.
This time, the path felt different—older and more mysterious. The massive roots of mahogany trees coiled across the dirt like sleeping snakes. As they walked deeper, they reached a desolate spot where the wind suddenly seemed to die down. Aryan noticed that the bright blue sky above had faded into a strange, dark grayish hue.
Suddenly, Megha stopped. Her voice trembled slightly as she asked, "Aryan, did we cross this narrow stream before? Why does everything look exactly the same?"
Ayan looked around carefully. The path they had used to get here had vanished, swallowed by the thick bushes like a magic trick. There were no sounds of human footsteps, no familiar noises. Megha grabbed Ayan's hand tightly in fear. Her fingers were ice-cold, and at her touch, Ayan felt a sudden, fierce sense of responsibility. The heavy darkness of the forest was closing in on them when, suddenly, a flash of lightning tore through the sky in the distance.
In that brief flash of light, Aryan saw an ancient, moss-covered stone altar ahead. Resting on it was a strange, broken lantern.
Megha stepped completely against Ayan, her voice choking with panic. "Aryan, look... behind that huge tree. Who is that? Is someone watching us?"
Ayan followed her gaze and saw a tall, still shadow standing in the darkness of the bushes. As the lightning faded, pitch-black darkness swallowed them again. The ancient silence of the forest was suddenly broken by a strange, rustling sound moving toward them—like the heavy crunch of footsteps dragging over dry leaves.
Ayan squeezed Megha's hand tighter. He could see in the dimness that her face was pale with fear. He knew he couldn't break down now. Placing a gentle hand on her shoulder, he said calmly, "Don't be scared, Megha. I'm right here. Can you step into the dark with me?"
Megha looked into his eyes for a moment. A battle between fear and deep trust waged in her gaze. Slowly, she nodded. Holding onto his hand with all her might, she whispered, "I can go anywhere with you."
They didn't stand there waiting. Since the path behind them was gone, the only way out was forward. Hand in hand, Ayan and Megha stepped bravely into the eerie darkness to find out exactly what that shadow was, and where that rustling sound was coming from...
