Chapter 14 - Work

Morning came quietly.

Yuto didn't sleep.

He didn't need to.

The body rested.

But something inside him—

remained active.

That pressure.

Not violent.

Not unstable.

Smooth.

It moved when he focused on it.

Through his arms.

Through his legs.

Responding.

He stood.

Outside—

the village was already awake.

Voices.

Movement.

Alive.

Yuto stepped out.

People glanced at him.

Brief.

Uncertain.

He ignored it.

"You're the one Lera picked up?"

Yuto turned.

A broad man stood nearby, carrying wood.

"…Yes."

"Then don't just stand there."

He jerked his head.

"Help with work."

Yuto stepped forward.

He grabbed the bundle.

Light.

Too light.

Instinctively—

that inner pressure shifted.

Reduced.

His grip softened.

Balanced.

He carried it.

Set it down.

Again.

And again.

No wasted motion.

No fatigue.

After a while—

"You're not even breathing heavily?"

Yuto looked up.

The man was watching him now.

"Should I be?"

"Yeah. You should."

Yuto paused.

Then—

he adjusted.

His breathing grew heavier.

Forced.

"…Like this?"

The man stared.

Then shook his head.

"Weird kid."

More work followed.

Carrying.

Moving materials.

Yuto slowed himself.

Deliberately.

Too efficient—

would stand out.

"Hey."

A voice.

Close.

Yuto turned.

A boy stood there.

Around his age?

Messy hair.

Too much energy.

"You're new, right?"

"…Yes."

He grinned.

"I knew it."

"…Why?"

"You don't look like you belong here."

Yuto didn't answer.

"Name's Ryn."

"…Yuto."

"Yuto, huh…"

Ryn tilted his head.

"You talk kinda stiff."

"…So I've been told."

Ryn laughed.

"Yeah, I can see why."

They worked together.

Ryn talked.

Constantly.

About the village.

About hunting.

About people.

Yuto listened.

Stored everything.

Then—

"You're strong."

Direct.

Yuto didn't react.

"…Average."

"Yeah, no."

Ryn pointed at the wood pile.

"You're holding back."

Yuto paused.

Internally—

Assessment.

Observation accuracy: high

"…I see."

"That's it?"

Ryn laughed.

"No denial?"

"…It doesn't change anything."

Ryn grinned.

"You're weird! I like that!"

Silence settled briefly.

Then—

"You ever used mana?"

Yuto looked at him.

"…what is mana?"

Ryn blinked.

"…You're serious?"

"…Yes."

Ryn scratched his head.

"Alright… uh…"

He held up his hand.

"You know that feeling?"

He flexed his fingers.

"Like… something inside you moves when you focus?"

Yuto froze.

That—

"…Continue."

Ryn nodded.

"That's mana."

"It's inside everyone."

"Humans use it for magic."

"They shape it. Control it outside their body."

He made a vague motion.

"Spells. Stuff like that."

Yuto stayed still.

Inside—

that pressure shifted.

Reacting.

"Then there are also demons"

Yuto looked at Ryn with a questioning look.

"Demons?"

"They don't really use magic like us."

"They use mana to purely strengthen themselves."

"They all also have some sort of ability that they can use, using mana"

Silence.

Yuto looked down at his hand.

That pressure—

flowed.

Followed his focus.

Strengthened his grip.

Stabilized movement.

"…I see."

Not new.

Just—

named.

Ryn leaned closer.

"You've felt it, haven't you?"

Yuto didn't deny it.

"…Yes."

Ryn grinned.

"Thought so!"

"Most people can't control it well."

"You either train it…"

"Or you're just talented."

Talented.

Yuto processed that.

No.

Not talent.

Efficiency.

"…If someone could control it precisely…"

Yuto spoke slowly.

"…what would that mean?"

Ryn smirked.

"That they're strong."

Pause.

"Or dangerous."

That made sense.

Yuto flexed his fingers slightly.

The pressure responded instantly.

No delay.

No waste.

"…Understood."

Ryn stretched.

"Anyway…"

He leaned back.

"This place is boring."

Yuto glanced at him.

"?"

"it's just so repetitive, so little stuff here"

"There's more out there."

Ryn pointed beyond the village.

"Cities. Guilds. Adventurers. dungeons"

Guilds.

"Fight monsters. Get paid."

Ryn continued.

"Get stronger."

That word again.

Yuto looked beyond the village.

Unknown.

Opportunity.

"…You intend to leave?"

"Yeah."

Ryn smiled.

"Soon."

"…You will die."

Ryn blinked.

"Damn."

"…Statistically."

Ryn laughed.

"Yeah, probably."

Then—

he looked directly at Yuto.

"But I'm still going!"

That—

again—

didn't fit.

And yet—

it did.

"Come with me."

Yuto turned fully.

"…Why?"

Ryn shrugged.

"Because you're strong?"

Pause.

"And you don't belong in a place like this either."

Silence.

Yuto looked at the village.

Stable.

Limited.

Then beyond.

Unknown.

Growth.

The pressure inside him—

shifted.

Not reacting.

Aligning.

"…Acceptable."

Ryn blinked.

"You always talk like that?"

"…Yes."

Ryn laughed.

"Alright then."

"We leave in a few days."

Yuto nodded once.

That night—

he stood alone.

Hand slightly raised.

He focused.

The pressure flowed.

Clean.

Efficient.

"…Mana."

The word felt correct.

Earned.

This world—

was different.

But the rule remained the same.

Consume.

Adapt.

Grow.

And now—

he had a direction.

Forward.
