Chapter 18 - Human World Adaption

The night didn't stay still.

It never did.

Yuto remained awake.

Mira had settled near the edge of the rock shelf, back against stone, knees slightly drawn in—not resting, not fully alert. The kind of stillness that came not from safety, but exhaustion.

Ryn went to sleep again.

Yuto watched the dark.

Not with his eyes alone.

The pressure inside him—mana—spread lightly through his body. Not outward. Never outward. It stayed contained, but it sharpened his perception.

The ground.

The air.

Subtle shifts.

He felt something—

A disturbance.

Faint.

Far.

Moving.

Yuto's body stilled further.

It was coming from the east.

The direction Mira had come from.

Consistent.

Not wandering.

Tracking.

He stood.

Slow.

Controlled.

Mira's eyes snapped open instantly.

"You heard it too?" she whispered.

Yuto didn't answer.

That was enough.

She was already on edge.

Good.

Ryn shifted behind them, half-awake.

"…What is it…?"

Yuto spoke.

"Something is approaching."

Ryn exhaled once, pushing himself up.

"…How many?"

Yuto paused.

Measured.

"…Not one."

Mira's grip tightened against the ground.

"...I told you."

Ryn stood fully now, hand moving to his weapon.

"…How close?"

Yuto turned slightly.

"…Close enough."

The sound came next.

Not loud.

But wrong.

Feet—but not clean steps.

Too many.

Uneven.

Dragging between strides.

The brush ahead shifted.

Then—

They emerged.

Three.

Low.

Lean.

Their forms stretched unnaturally—long limbs, joints bending slightly off from where they should. Their bodies were covered in patchy fur, but the skin beneath showed through in places, dark and tight like it had been pulled too thin.

Their heads tilted.

Not together.

Individually.

Watching.

Yuto didn't move.

The pressure inside him settled.

Even.

Ready.

"…Not wolves," Mira whispered.

Correct.

They definitely weren't wovles.

The creatures didn't rush immediately.

They circled slightly.

Testing.

Ryn adjusted his stance.

"Alright! Same as before!"

Yuto didn't respond.

One of them moved first.

Not a full lunge.

A step.

Testing distance.

Yuto stepped forward.

Just enough.

The creature reacted instantly—its body snapping forward, faster than before, claws digging into the ground as it launched.

Yuto moved.

No delay.

His arm shifted—

Not visibly.

But internally, the structure tightened.

The strike landed.

Precise.

Pierced.

The creature jerked—

But didn't stop.

It pushed forward.

Closer than expected.

Its claws scraped across his side.

Shallow.

But it had reached him.

Yuto adjusted.

Pressure increased.

Focused.

The structure of his arm compressed further—

Then—

The resistance broke.

The creature went still.

The other two didn't hesitate.

They came at once.

From both sides.

Ryn intercepted one.

His blade met it mid-lunge—

This time, cleaner.

Better timing.

But still—

Not enough to stop it immediately.

The creature forced through his strike.

Ryn stepped back—

Barely avoiding the follow-up.

Yuto turned.

The second creature was already within range.

Too close for a full extension.

He didn't extend.

Short movement.

Controlled.

His hand drove forward.

Pierced.

Held.

This one struggled a bit longer.

Its body twisted violently, limbs snapping against him—

But his structure held.

It stopped.

The third pressed Ryn harder now.

Faster.

More aggressive.

Ryn blocked—

Then slipped.

One step.

Too far back.

The creature lunged—

Yuto moved.

Not toward the creature—

Toward the space between.

He intercepted it mid-motion.

His arm shifted again—

Edge forming.

Cleaner.

Sharper.

The strike landed—

Deeper.

The creature stopped immediately.

Silence.

Three bodies.

Still.

The air settled.

Ryn exhaled hard.

"Yeah, those were not wolves."

Mira hadn't moved.

She was just watching.

Her breathing was controlled—but tight.

"You killed them so fast," she said.

Yuto looked at the bodies.

"…Not fast enough."

Ryn let out a short laugh.

"You're joking, right?."

"...No."

Yuto crouched slightly.

Observed them.

The creatures were different.

Their structure—

Less stable.

More stretched.

As if something had altered them.

Not natural.

The thought came.

Then—

Another.

Something else had followed them.

Yuto stood.

"…This is not the source."

Ryn frowned.

"…Source of what?"

Yuto looked east.

"…Them."

Mira's expression changed.

"You mean—"

Yuto didn't wait.

The pressure inside him shifted.

Not outward.

Deeper.

Prepared.

"…Something else is coming."

This time—

There was no delay.

The ground ahead cracked.

Not from impact.

From weight.

A shape moved through the dark.

Larger.

Heavier.

Not fast.

But each step—

Pressed into the earth.

The smaller creatures had been noise.

This—

Was not.

It emerged slowly.

Tall.

Its body uneven, like the one Yuto had faced before in the demon world—but more stable.

Its limbs were too long.

But not uncontrolled.

Its head lifted.

And it looked at them.

The pressure inside Yuto didn't surge.

It tightened.

Focused.

"Hey, that's not something we are going to fight," Mira said quietly.

Ryn didn't respond.

His grip tightened.

But he didn't step back.

Yuto stepped forward.

One step.

The creature moved.

Not rushing.

But faster than its size suggested.

Its limb came down—

Heavy.

Direct.

Yuto shifted.

Clean.

The strike missed.

The ground behind him cracked open.

He didn't retreat.

He closed distance.

Short movement.

Precise.

His arm shifted—

Edge forming—

Denser than before.

He struck.

The impact landed—

But—

It didn't pierce fully.

Resistance.

Actual and real resistance.

The creature reacted.

Faster.

Its other limb snapped toward him.

Yuto twisted—

But not fully.

The strike hit.

His body held—

But the force pushed him back.

Not far.

But enough.

Yuto stopped.

The pressure inside him remained stable.

But—

He understood.

This was different.

Ryn moved in.

From the side.

His blade struck—

The creature turned—

Blocked.

Too easily.

Mira stepped back further.

"…We can't—"

Yuto moved again.

Not rushing.

Not forcing.

He adjusted.

His arm shifted—

Not just edge—

Density increased deeper.

More compression.

More force.

He stepped in—

Timed—

The creature struck—

Yuto didn't dodge fully.

He met it.

Redirected—

Just enough—

His arm drove forward—

Deeper.

This time—

It pierced.

The creature jerked.

Its movement stuttered—

Just for a moment.

That was enough.

Yuto pushed further.

The structure held.

Didn't collapse.

Didn't slip.

The resistance broke.

The creature stopped.

Silence returned.

Yuto stood still.

The pressure inside him—

Stable.

But—

He felt it.

That difference again.

This one had required more.

More precision.

More force.

More structure.

Ryn exhaled slowly.

"…Alright."

A pause.

"We're not normal, are we?"

Mira stared at the body.

Then at Yuto.

"…You're not."

Yuto didn't respond.

He looked east again.

The smaller ones.

This one.

They weren't random.

"…We move at first light," Yuto said.

Ryn blinked.

"You're the one giving orders now?"

"...Yes."

Ryn stared at him.

Then—

smiled slightly.

"Alright."

Mira didn't smile.

She was still looking at the direction the creatures had come from.

"…If more of those are out there…"

Yuto answered.

"…There are."

The night settled again.

But not the same way.
