Chapter 3 - Caspian POV

I don't involve myself in small matters. That's what my staff is for, and everything in this company runs on structure. I expect it to stay that way. No mistakes, no unnecessary actions, no one stepping out of line. That is how I built this place, and that is how it remains. But today, something didn't follow that pattern, and I noticed it immediately.

Maya.

She wasn't supposed to stand out. On paper, she was nothing different from the others. No experience, no connections, no reason to be noticed. Yet she didn't blend in. I saw it during the interview, and I saw it again today. She doesn't try to impress. She doesn't speak more than necessary. When I asked why she wanted the job, she gave one answer and stopped. She needed a job. That was all. Most people talk too much. She didn't.

Kai came in after knocking and gave his usual report. Everything was on schedule, just as expected. Meetings, updates, nothing out of place. Then he mentioned the new staff, and I already knew where the conversation was going. She had adjusted a design without reporting it first. I had already seen it before he said anything. It was a small correction, but it changed the structure enough to be noticed.

It wasn't the change that mattered. It was the decision.

She acted without permission.

That doesn't fit here.

Kai pointed out that it broke protocol and asked if it should be addressed. I told him no. There was no need to make it bigger than it was. He then mentioned that the staff were already talking about her. That didn't surprise me. Someone like her would always draw attention in a place like this. She doesn't belong to this environment, and people react to what doesn't fit.

He asked if restrictions should be placed around her. I told him no again.

If she couldn't handle pressure, she wouldn't last.

Simple.

Kai said she wouldn't adjust easily. That wasn't my concern. People either adapt or they leave. There's no space in between. That's how this place works.

I moved toward the window and looked down at the city. Everything outside continued without pause. Cars moved, people walked, nothing stopped. Inside this company, it's different. Every decision matters. Every action has weight. That is what separates this place from everything else. Before I took over, this company was losing direction. Weak leadership, poor control, unnecessary risks. I removed all of it. Now everything follows order.

Which is why I notice when something doesn't.

Kai spoke again, saying she didn't seem aware of where she was yet. I told him she would learn. He asked what would happen if she didn't. I told him she would leave. There was nothing more to it.

Before he left, he added one more thing. He said she wasn't nervous.

That stayed for a second.

Most people are nervous on their first day. They hesitate, they overthink, they try too hard. She didn't. She was steady. Not confident. Not relaxed. Just steady.

That's unusual.

But unusual doesn't matter.

Results do.

After he left, I returned to my desk and continued working, but my attention didn't settle immediately. Her answer came back again. She needed a job. No hesitation. No explanation. Most people try to say what they think I want to hear. She didn't.

That doesn't make her important.

But it makes her noticeable.

And I don't ignore things that stand out.

If she follows the rules, she stays.

If she doesn't, she leaves.

That's all there is there is to.
