Chapter 9 - Breaking Point

The days that followed did not get easier for Maya. If anything, they became more demanding and exhausting. She had already adjusted to the rhythm of the company, but the pressure continued to increase in ways she could not ignore. Every task carried weight, and even the smallest mistake felt like it could cost her everything.

She tried to stay focused the way she always did. She kept her head down, worked through every file carefully, and avoided drawing attention to herself. It had worked before, and she believed it would continue to work if she just kept going without stopping.

But her body was beginning to give in.

The lack of proper rest, the long hours, and the constant tension were slowly catching up with her. Her movements were no longer as steady as before, and her concentration slipped in small ways she could feel but could not fully control. She noticed it, and that alone made everything worse because she knew she could not afford mistakes.

That morning, the workload came earlier than expected. Files were placed on her desk one after another, leaving little space for pause. Maya didn't question it. She simply started working, moving from one task to the next without stopping.

The whispers around her had not stopped either. They had only changed, becoming quieter but still clear enough for her to hear when she least wanted to. Some questioned how long she would last, while others spoke as if she was already falling behind. Maya pretended not to hear any of it because she could not afford to let it get to her.

As the hours passed, the strain became harder to hide. Her eyes felt heavier, her hands less steady, and her thoughts more scattered than before. She paused briefly, just long enough to steady herself, before continuing again.

Across the room, Caspian entered, and just like every other time, the atmosphere shifted without anyone saying a word. Maya didn't look up, but she felt it. She always did. His presence carried a weight she could not ignore, no matter how much she tried to focus.

She continued working, forcing herself to stay steady, but this time it was not enough. A mistake slipped through. It was small, but it was there, and she noticed it too late. Her breath tightened slightly as she stared at the page. She corrected it immediately, making sure the adjustment was clean, but the tension in her chest did not ease.

Not long after, she was called again.

Maya stood up, her legs heavier than before, and walked toward the office. Each step felt slower, but she did not stop. She stepped inside and stood in front of him, keeping her posture straight even though her body felt strained.

Caspian looked at the file and then at her. He pointed out the mistake in a calm, controlled tone. Maya told him she had already corrected it. He asked why it happened in the first place, and she did not have an answer that would satisfy him. Instead, she told him she would be more careful.

He watched her for a moment before telling her that being careful was not enough. Mistakes were not acceptable.

Maya felt something shift inside her, something quiet but heavy. She nodded and said she understood.

He dismissed her.

Maya turned and walked out, keeping her steps steady until the door closed behind her. Once she was outside, the pressure settled on her fully. She paused for a moment, trying to steady herself before returning to her desk.

When she sat down, her focus was no longer the same. The words in front of her blurred slightly, and she had to force herself to stay on track. She could not afford to break down, not when everything depended on this job.

The rest of the day passed slowly. She did not speak to anyone, and no one approached her. The distance around her remained, but this time it felt heavier than before.

By the time the day ended, she packed her things quickly and left the building. Her steps were faster than usual as she moved outside.

She stopped.

The air felt cooler, but it did not ease anything inside her. Her chest tightened, and before she could stop it, tears filled her eyes. She looked away, blinking quickly, trying to hold it back.

She did not want to cry, but it came anyway.

Maya wiped her face and continued walking, not wanting to stay in one place. She told herself it did not matter and that she would be fine, but deep down, she knew something had started to break.

And she did not know how long she could keep holding herself together.
