Chapter 7 - Friction

By the end of the week, Maya no longer felt like a newcomer, but she didn't feel like she belonged either. She had learned the system, understood the expectations, and adjusted her pace to match the environment, yet the distance between her and everyone else remained. It wasn't something she tried to change. She simply accepted it and focused on what she came there to do.

Her routine stayed the same as the previous days. She arrived early, worked without pause, and left without drawing attention to herself. It was easier that way because the fewer interactions she had, the fewer problems she created. That was what she believed, and it helped her stay focused.

That morning started quietly, just like the others. Maya settled into her work, reviewing the files placed on her desk and moving through them steadily. She didn't rush, but she didn't slow down either. Every line she checked and every detail she adjusted was done carefully before she moved forward.

As the hours passed, the workload increased again. It wasn't overwhelming, but it demanded her full attention. She stayed focused, ignoring the movement around her and the occasional glances that still came her way. By now, she was used to it and no longer let it distract her.

At some point, a design was placed in front of her that required more than a simple review. It needed correction, and she could see it clearly. This time, she didn't hesitate. She adjusted it carefully, making sure everything aligned properly before continuing with the rest of her work.

Not long after, the file was taken from her desk, and a few minutes later, she was called. Maya stood up calmly and walked toward the office. She stepped inside and stopped at the usual distance, her posture straight and her expression steady.

Caspian looked at the file before looking at her and asked if she made the adjustment. Maya answered yes. He asked if she reported it first, and she said no. There was a brief pause before he reminded her of what he had said earlier. Maya listened without interrupting, then explained that the correction was necessary and delaying it would have affected the work.

He didn't respond immediately. He simply watched her.

Maya held his gaze for a moment before looking away because she didn't want to stay there longer than necessary. He told her she was not there to decide what was necessary. Maya felt something tighten slightly in her chest, but she kept her voice steady and told him she understood. He asked if she did, and she said yes again.

Another short silence followed before he told her not to repeat it. Maya nodded, took the file, and turned to leave without saying anything else.

When she returned to her desk, she didn't sit immediately. She stood there for a moment, then placed the file down and continued working. Her movements were steady, but her thoughts were not as calm as before.

It wasn't just about the correction anymore. It was about him and the way he spoke, the way he dismissed everything she said without considering it. To her, it felt unfair, even though she didn't say it out loud.

She didn't like being controlled, and she didn't like being told what to do without explanation. More than anything, she didn't like him, and that feeling became clearer as the day went on.

The rest of the day passed, but something had shifted inside her. She was still quiet and focused, but the distance she kept now felt different. It wasn't just avoidance anymore. It was deliberate, something she chose rather than something that just happened.

By the time the day ended, Maya packed her things and left without hesitation. She didn't look back or slow down, and she didn't think about anything else except getting away from that place.

Outside, the air felt the same, but she didn't stop this time. She kept walking, her thoughts moving faster than her steps.

She had come there to work and nothing more, and that was exactly how she intended to keep it.h
