Maya thought the strange feeling from the previous day would fade, but it didn't. When she arrived at work that morning, it was still there, sitting quietly in her chest. It was not as strong as before, but it had not disappeared either. She tried to ignore it as she walked in, telling herself it was just stress because that was easier to believe.
She went to her desk and started working like she always did. She didn't look around or try to understand what was going on. She just focused on the files in front of her because work was the only thing she felt she could control.
After some time, she noticed something different. The usual people who moved around the workspace were not the only ones there. There were others she had not seen before. They were not many, but their presence stood out. They did not behave like regular staff. They seemed to watch more than they worked. Maya lowered her eyes and continued because it was not her place to think about things like that.
A few minutes later, someone stopped at her desk. Maya looked up and saw a woman standing there. She was well dressed, calm, and carried herself in a way that made it clear she was not just another staff member. There was something about her that made Maya sit up straighter without even thinking.
The woman looked down at the files on Maya's desk, then at her. She said Maya was the new one. Maya nodded and said yes. The woman's eyes stayed on her a moment longer before she asked for her name. Maya told her. There was a small pause, then the woman gave a light smile that did not reach her eyes and said she had heard about her.
Maya's fingers tightened slightly on the file she was holding. She didn't know what that meant, and she didn't like how it sounded. She replied quietly that she was just working. The woman said of course, but the tone did not feel like agreement. Her eyes moved over the files again before returning to Maya, and she told her to keep it that way. After that, she turned and walked away.
Maya stayed still for a moment. Her heart was beating faster than before, and she didn't understand why. That was not a normal conversation, and she could feel it. She lowered her eyes and tried to continue her work, but her focus was no longer steady. The words stayed in her mind, and she could not ignore them no matter how much she tried.
Across the room, Kai had seen everything. He stood close to Caspian and spoke quietly, saying that the woman had approached Maya. Caspian's eyes shifted briefly in Maya's direction before returning to what he was doing. He said he already knew. Kai added that it would not end there, and Caspian remained silent for a moment before telling him to keep watching. Kai nodded and stepped away.
Back at her desk, Maya forced herself to continue working. She picked up another file and focused on it, even though her mind kept returning to the same thought. She did not belong in whatever that was, and she did not want to be part of it. She only wanted to work and keep things simple, but it no longer felt simple.
The rest of the morning passed slowly. Maya completed her tasks one after another, but the calm she usually had while working was gone. Every small sound made her look up, and every movement around her felt more noticeable. She did not like it, and she could not ignore it.
By the afternoon, the workload reduced slightly, but the feeling did not. It stayed with her, quiet and unsettling. When the day finally ended, Maya packed her things like she always did, but this time she did not leave immediately. She sat there for a moment, thinking and trying to understand what was happening.
Then she stood up and walked out.
Outside, the air felt the same, but she did not feel the same. She walked more slowly than usual, her thoughts louder than before. She had come into that place thinking her only problem would be work, but now she was not sure.
Something else had started.
And she had no idea how far it would go.
