Chapter 21 - THE SPACE BETWEEN US

The waiting was the hardest part.

Not the looks.

Not the whispers.

Not even Vanessa.

It was this—

This strange, stretched-out space where everything had been said, but nothing had been decided.

Lina felt it in every moment.

In the way her thoughts drifted when she tried to study.

In the way her chest tightened whenever she saw either of them.

In the way silence now felt louder than words.

---

It started to show.

"You're thinking too much again."

Lina glanced up from her notebook.

Clara sat across from her in the library, chin resting lightly on her hand, watching her with quiet focus.

"I always think," Lina replied.

"Not like this."

Clara gestured to the page in front of her.

It was filled—

Not with notes.

But with the same name written over and over again.

Different handwriting each time. Messier. Lighter. Pressed harder.

Adrian.

Lina quickly closed the notebook.

Heat rushed to her face. "You weren't supposed to see that."

Clara didn't tease her.

Didn't smile.

She just said, gently, "That answers one question."

Lina looked away. "It doesn't answer anything."

"It answers something."

Silence settled between them.

Heavy.

Honest.

"And Ethan?" Clara asked carefully.

That question didn't come with embarrassment.

It came with confusion.

"I don't know," Lina admitted.

Clara nodded slowly, like she expected that.

"You don't have to like people the same way," she said. "Feelings don't follow rules."

"I wish they did."

"Everyone does."

Lina leaned back slightly, exhaling. "I don't want to hurt him."

Clara's expression softened. "You probably will."

That wasn't what Lina wanted to hear.

But it felt real.

"Or," Clara added quietly, "you might hurt Adrian."

Lina frowned. "He doesn't seem like the type to get hurt."

Clara gave her a look.

"Everyone is," she said simply.

---

By lunch, the tension had shifted again.

Not gone.

Just… different.

More contained.

More deliberate.

Lina sat at the edge of the courtyard, her food untouched again, though this time it wasn't because she couldn't eat.

It was because she was waiting.

She didn't know for who.

But she knew someone would come.

And someone did.

"Mind if I sit?"

Ethan.

Lina shook her head. "Go ahead."

He sat beside her, leaving a comfortable space between them.

Not too close.

Not distant either.

"I'm trying something new," he said.

She glanced at him. "What?"

"Not overthinking every word before I say it."

"That sounds dangerous."

"It probably is."

A small smile tugged at her lips.

It faded quickly.

"Have you eaten?" he asked.

"Not really."

Ethan looked at her tray, then back at her. "You should."

"I know."

But she didn't move.

A few seconds passed.

Then—

"I meant what I said," Ethan added quietly.

Lina's chest tightened.

"I know."

"I'm not going to take it back just because things got complicated."

"I didn't ask you to."

"I know."

Silence again.

But it wasn't uncomfortable.

Just… real.

"I don't expect anything from you right now," Ethan continued. "But I do want you to be honest with me when you figure things out."

Lina nodded slowly. "You deserve that."

Something in his expression shifted at that.

Softer.

"Yeah," he said quietly. "I do."

---

"You always find her first."

The voice was familiar.

And this time—

Not unexpected.

Adrian.

He walked toward them, hands in his pockets, gaze flicking briefly to Ethan before settling on Lina.

"I didn't know there was a schedule," Ethan replied calmly.

"There isn't."

"Good."

Lina sighed lightly. "Do you two ever not do this?"

"Do what?" Adrian asked.

"This," she gestured between them. "Whatever this is."

Neither of them answered.

Because they didn't know either.

Adrian sat down on her other side.

Not too close.

Mirroring Ethan.

And just like that—

She was in the middle again.

"Have you decided yet?" Adrian asked, his tone casual—but not really.

Lina glanced at him. "I said I needed time."

"And I said I'd wait."

"That didn't sound like waiting."

Ethan let out a quiet breath beside her.

Adrian smirked slightly. "You want me to ignore you instead?"

"That might actually help."

"Not happening."

Despite everything—

That made her smile.

Just a little.

---

Across the courtyard, Vanessa watched again.

This time, she wasn't alone.

"You're enjoying this way too much," Clara said quietly beside her.

Vanessa didn't look away. "It's interesting."

"It's messy."

"That's what makes it interesting."

Clara crossed her arms. "You're going to interfere, aren't you?"

Vanessa smiled faintly.

"I haven't decided yet."

"That means yes."

Vanessa finally glanced at her. "You think I'm the villain here?"

"I think you don't like losing."

That made Vanessa pause.

Just for a second.

Then—

"Maybe," she admitted.

Her gaze drifted back to Lina.

Thoughtful now.

"But this isn't about winning anymore."

"Then what is it about?"

Vanessa's smile returned—but softer.

"Let's see who she chooses."

---

Back at the table, the balance didn't last long.

Because eventually—

Something had to shift.

"Walk with me?"

Adrian's voice cut through the moment.

Lina looked at him. "Now?"

"Yeah."

Ethan didn't say anything.

But she could feel it—

That quiet awareness.

That silent question.

Lina hesitated.

Then stood.

"Okay."

Adrian got up with her.

They walked a few steps away, far enough for privacy—but not far enough to disappear.

Ethan stayed where he was.

Watching.

Trying not to.

Failing.

---

"You didn't have to say yes," Adrian said once they were alone.

"I know."

"Then why did you?"

Lina looked at him.

Because the answer mattered.

"Because I needed to hear what you were going to say."

Adrian nodded slightly.

Fair enough.

"I'm not going to compete with him," he said.

That wasn't what she expected.

"What?"

"I'm not turning this into some kind of game," he continued. "That's not what you are to me."

Her chest tightened.

"Then what am I to you?" she asked quietly.

Adrian held her gaze.

And for once—

There was no hesitation.

"Someone I don't want to lose."

That hit harder than anything else he'd said before.

Because it wasn't dramatic.

It wasn't rehearsed.

It was simple.

And real.

"You might," Lina said softly.

"I know."

"Does that scare you?"

Adrian let out a quiet breath.

"Yeah," he admitted.

That—

That changed something.

Because Adrian didn't admit fear.

Not like that.

Not easily.

---

A few feet away, Ethan looked down at his hands.

He didn't need to hear their words.

He could see enough.

Feel enough.

And it wasn't jealousy that settled in his chest—

Not exactly.

It was something quieter.

Heavier.

The kind of feeling that comes when you realize—

You might already be a step behind.

---

"You should go back," Lina said after a moment.

Adrian nodded. "Yeah."

But neither of them moved right away.

Because the space between them—

Felt different now.

Closer.

More dangerous.

"Lina," he said quietly.

"Yeah?"

"Don't take too long."

Not pressure.

Not quite.

But close enough.

She nodded slowly.

"I won't."

---

When she walked back to the table, Ethan looked up at her.

Just once.

That was all it took.

Because in that one look—

He understood something had shifted.

Even if nothing had been said.

"Everything okay?" he asked.

Lina nodded. "Yeah."

But her voice wasn't as steady as before.

Ethan noticed.

Of course he did.

But he didn't push.

Not this time.

---

That evening, Lina sat on her bed, staring at her phone.

Messages unread.

Thoughts unfinished.

Feelings tangled.

Clara's voice echoed in her mind.

That answers one question.

Maybe it did.

But not all of them.

Not yet.

She closed her eyes, exhaling slowly.

This space—

This in-between—

It wasn't going to last forever.

And deep down—

She knew it.

A choice was coming.

Soon.

---

And when it did—

It wouldn't just change her.

It would change all of them.
