Chapter 25 - THE FIRST CRACK

For a few days, things felt… steady.

Not perfect.

Not effortless.

But steady in a way Lina hadn't expected.

Classes went on. Conversations happened. The world didn't collapse just because she had made a choice.

And yet—

Something underneath it all felt fragile.

Like a thin layer of calm over something waiting to break.

---

It showed in small ways.

In the way people still watched her.

In the way Vanessa hadn't said much since that day—but hadn't stopped observing either.

In the way Ethan kept his distance just enough to make it noticeable.

And in the way Adrian—

Adrian was trying.

---

"You're overthinking again."

Lina glanced up from her notebook.

They were sitting under the old tree near the edge of campus, far from the usual noise. It had become their place without either of them saying it out loud.

"I'm not," she said automatically.

Adrian raised an eyebrow. "You've been staring at the same page for ten minutes."

"I like the page."

"Right."

She sighed, closing the notebook. "Okay, maybe a little."

"A little?"

Lina leaned back against the trunk, tilting her head toward the sky. "Everything just feels… new."

Adrian followed her gaze. "That's because it is."

"I know. I just don't want to mess it up."

He looked at her then—really looked.

"You won't."

"You don't know that."

"Yeah," he said, a small smile forming, "I do."

Lina frowned slightly. "How?"

"Because you care this much."

That answer settled somewhere deep in her chest.

Warm.

But not entirely reassuring.

"Caring doesn't always fix things," she said quietly.

"No," Adrian admitted. "But not caring definitely breaks them."

She let out a small breath.

Fair point.

---

Their hands brushed again.

This time, it wasn't accidental.

Adrian's fingers lightly caught hers, like he was testing the space between them.

Still giving her a choice.

Still careful.

Lina hesitated—

Then let her fingers curl around his.

It felt easier than before.

More natural.

Less like a question.

Adrian noticed.

Of course he did.

And something in his expression softened in a way that made her look away first.

---

But peace didn't last.

It never did.

---

"Wow."

The voice cut through the moment like a blade.

Sharp.

Unapologetic.

Lina stiffened immediately.

Vanessa.

She stood a few feet away, arms crossed, her gaze fixed on their joined hands.

"Well, that didn't take long," she added.

Adrian didn't let go.

If anything, his grip tightened slightly.

"What do you want, Vanessa?" he asked flatly.

Vanessa ignored him.

Her attention was on Lina.

"Comfortable already?" she asked, her tone light—but not kind.

Lina pulled her hand back slowly, more out of instinct than decision.

Vanessa noticed that too.

Of course she did.

"That answers that," she murmured.

Adrian's jaw tightened. "Say what you came to say and leave."

Vanessa finally looked at him.

And smiled.

"I didn't come to say anything," she said. "I came to watch."

"That's creepy."

"It's honest."

Silence fell.

Tense.

Unpleasant.

Then—

"You should be careful," Vanessa added, her gaze flicking between them. "Things that start fast don't always end well."

Lina felt that one land.

Right where it hurt.

"We're not 'things,'" she said quietly.

Vanessa tilted her head. "No?"

Her eyes softened slightly—but not in a comforting way.

"Then prove it."

That—

That stayed.

Even after she turned and walked away.

---

"Ignore her," Adrian said immediately.

"I'm trying."

"She doesn't get to define this."

"I know."

But knowing and feeling were two different things.

And right now—

Vanessa's words felt louder than they should.

---

That afternoon, the shift became clearer.

Not in a big moment.

But in the small spaces.

In the gaps.

---

Lina walked into class—

And felt it.

The attention.

The awareness.

The quiet judgment that followed her more openly now.

She sat down, trying to ignore it.

Trying to focus.

But it lingered.

"You okay?"

She looked to her side.

Ethan.

He hadn't sat next to her in days.

Not like this.

"Yeah," she said. "Just tired."

He studied her for a moment.

Like he didn't believe that.

But he didn't push.

"People talk too much," he said instead.

Lina let out a small, humorless laugh. "That's not new."

"No," he agreed. "But it's louder now."

That was true.

Too true.

A pause.

Then—

"You don't have to deal with it alone."

Lina glanced at him.

"I'm not alone."

Ethan's expression didn't change.

"I know," he said.

And somehow—

That made it worse.

---

After school, Lina didn't go to the usual spot.

She didn't go looking for Adrian.

She didn't go home either.

Instead—

She wandered.

Through empty halls.

Quiet corners.

Anywhere that didn't feel like it was watching her.

But thoughts followed anyway.

Things that start fast don't always end well.

Vanessa's voice.

Again.

And again.

And again.

---

"You're hiding."

Lina turned.

Clara stood in the doorway, arms loosely crossed.

"I'm not hiding," Lina said.

Clara raised an eyebrow.

"You left without telling anyone."

"I needed space."

"That's a nicer way of saying it."

Lina sighed, leaning back against the wall. "I just… needed to think."

Clara stepped closer. "About him?"

"…About everything."

Clara nodded slowly.

"And?"

Lina hesitated.

Then—

"I think I'm scared."

"Of Adrian?"

"No."

She shook her head.

"Of losing control."

That made Clara pause.

"Explain."

Lina looked down at her hands.

"At first, it felt like I was choosing," she said quietly. "But now it feels like everything is moving faster than I can keep up with."

Clara didn't interrupt.

Didn't rush her.

"So slow it down," she said gently.

"Can I?"

"Yes."

"How?"

Clara met her gaze.

"By setting your own pace," she said. "Not his. Not Vanessa's. Not anyone else's."

Lina exhaled slowly.

That sounded simple.

But it wasn't.

Not when feelings were involved.

---

That evening, Adrian noticed something was off.

Of course he did.

"You've been quiet," he said over the phone.

"I'm just tired."

"You've said that twice today."

Lina smiled faintly. "You're counting now?"

"Always."

There was a pause.

Then—

"Did something happen?"

Lina hesitated.

Then—

"Vanessa talked to us earlier."

Adrian's tone shifted instantly. "What did she say?"

"Nothing new."

"That's not reassuring."

Lina sat up slightly. "She just… got in my head a little."

Adrian was quiet for a moment.

Then—

"Don't let her do that."

"I'm trying."

"Try harder."

That came out sharper than he meant it to.

They both felt it.

"I am trying," Lina said softly.

Adrian exhaled. "I know. I just… don't like that she's affecting you."

"I don't either."

Silence.

Then—

"Do you regret it?" he asked.

The question landed hard.

Lina blinked. "What?"

"Choosing me."

Her chest tightened.

"No."

But it wasn't immediate.

And he noticed.

Of course he did.

---

"I don't regret it," she repeated, softer now.

Adrian didn't respond right away.

"Okay," he said finally.

But something in his voice had changed.

Just slightly.

Barely noticeable.

But enough.

---

That night, Lina lay awake longer than usual.

Staring at the ceiling.

Listening to the quiet.

But her thoughts weren't quiet.

They were loud.

Messy.

Uncertain.

And for the first time since she chose—

Doubt crept in.

Not about him.

Not really.

But about everything that came with it.

---

Because choosing someone—

Didn't mean everything else disappeared.

And sometimes—

It only made the cracks easier to see.
