By the end of the week, something had changed.
Not loudly.
Not in a way anyone could point to and say, there—that's the moment everything shifted.
But Lina felt it.
In the way time seemed to be running out.
In the way waiting no longer felt like safety—but like pressure.
Like something closing in.
---
It started with a message.
From Vanessa.
Which, in itself, was unusual.
Lina stared at her phone longer than she should have, reading the short text over and over again.
Meet me after school. Alone.
No explanation.
No attitude.
Just that.
And somehow, that made it more unsettling.
---
"You look like you just got bad news."
Lina looked up.
Clara stood beside her locker, arms folded loosely, expression calm but observant as always.
"Vanessa wants to meet me," Lina said.
Clara didn't look surprised.
"She finally made a move," she murmured.
"That doesn't make me feel better."
"It shouldn't."
Lina frowned. "Should I go?"
Clara hesitated.
That alone said a lot.
"…Yes," she said finally. "But don't go in unprepared."
"Unprepared for what?"
Clara met her gaze.
"For Vanessa to be honest."
That didn't make sense.
Vanessa wasn't honest.
She was calculated.
Careful.
Always three steps ahead.
"What does she want?" Lina asked.
Clara shook her head slightly. "That's the problem. When Vanessa calls you alone, it's never simple."
---
The rest of the day passed slowly.
Too slowly.
Every class felt like it stretched longer than it should, every minute dragging as Lina's thoughts circled around the same question:
Why now?
Adrian noticed.
Of course he did.
"You've been distracted all day," he said as they stepped out of class.
"I'm always distracted," Lina replied.
"Not like this."
She hesitated.
Then—
"Vanessa wants to see me after school."
That got his attention.
Immediately.
Adrian's expression hardened slightly. "Why?"
"I don't know."
"That's not a good sign."
"I figured."
Adrian stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Don't go alone."
"I don't think she gave me a choice."
"Then don't go."
Lina shook her head. "If I don't, she'll just escalate it."
Adrian didn't like that.
It showed.
"I'll come with you," he said.
"No."
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Adrian frowned. "Lina—"
"If you come, it changes the situation," she said. "And I need to know what she wants without… all of this."
She gestured between them.
Between everything.
Adrian exhaled slowly, clearly not convinced.
"At least text me when you're done."
"I will."
"Promise."
She nodded. "Promise."
---
Ethan found out five minutes later.
Not from Lina.
From Adrian.
Which already made it worse.
"She's meeting Vanessa alone?" Ethan repeated, his tone sharper than usual.
"That's what she said."
"And you're just letting that happen?"
Adrian crossed his arms. "What do you want me to do? Lock her in a room?"
Ethan ran a hand through his hair, frustrated. "You know Vanessa doesn't do anything without a reason."
"Yeah. I know."
"Then why does this feel like a bad idea?"
"Because it is."
Silence fell.
Heavy.
Real.
"Then we don't just sit back," Ethan said.
Adrian looked at him.
And for once—
They were on the same side.
"Agreed."
---
After school, the campus emptied out faster than usual.
Students drifting away in groups, laughter fading, noise dissolving into quiet.
By the time Lina reached the back of the building—
It was almost completely silent.
Vanessa was already there.
Leaning casually against the wall like she had all the time in the world.
"Right on time," she said.
Lina stopped a few feet away. "You wanted to talk."
Vanessa straightened slightly, studying her.
"You're calmer than I expected."
"I'm trying something new."
Vanessa smiled faintly. "I like it."
There was a pause.
Then—
"I'm going to be direct," Vanessa said.
That alone made Lina tense.
"Okay…"
Vanessa's gaze didn't waver.
"You need to choose."
Lina blinked. "That's not your decision to make."
"I didn't say it was," Vanessa replied smoothly. "I'm saying you don't have as much time as you think."
"Why?"
Vanessa pushed off the wall, stepping closer.
"Because things are already shifting around you," she said. "And if you don't take control of it soon… you'll lose it."
"Lose what?"
Vanessa tilted her head slightly.
"The ability to choose at all."
That didn't make sense.
And yet—
It felt like it did.
"You're being vague on purpose," Lina said.
"Of course I am."
Lina crossed her arms. "Then what do you actually want from me?"
Vanessa was quiet for a moment.
Then—
"I want to know if you understand what you're stepping into."
Lina frowned. "This isn't a game."
"I know," Vanessa said softly.
And for the first time—
There was no mockery in her voice.
"That's exactly why it matters."
Silence stretched between them.
And then—
"I used to be the only person Adrian looked at like that."
The words were quiet.
But they landed hard.
Lina's breath caught slightly.
Vanessa held her gaze.
"I'm not saying that because I want him back," she continued. "I'm saying it because I know what it means."
"What does it mean?" Lina asked, almost without thinking.
Vanessa's expression softened—
Just a little.
"It means he won't stop," she said. "Not halfway. Not when it gets difficult. Not even when it hurts."
Lina felt something twist in her chest.
"And Ethan?" she asked.
Vanessa's eyes flickered.
"That one's worse."
"Worse?"
"He'll step back for you," Vanessa said. "He'll make it easier for you—even if it breaks him."
That hit differently.
Quieter.
But deeper.
"So either way," Vanessa finished, "someone loses."
Lina swallowed.
"I already know that."
"Do you?" Vanessa asked softly.
Because knowing it—
And feeling it—
Were two very different things.
---
A few steps away, hidden just out of sight—
Adrian and Ethan stood in silence.
They hadn't meant to stand this close together.
But neither of them had left.
"She's been in there too long," Ethan muttered.
Adrian didn't respond.
His focus was fixed ahead.
Jaw tight.
Hands clenched.
"Relax," he said after a moment, though it sounded more like he was telling himself.
"I don't relax when Vanessa's involved."
"Neither do I."
Another pause.
Then—
"You really like her," Ethan said quietly.
Adrian didn't look at him.
"Yeah," he admitted.
Ethan nodded slowly.
"Me too."
The words hung there.
No tension this time.
No argument.
Just truth.
And maybe—
Understanding.
---
Back at the wall, Lina felt the conversation slipping into something deeper than she expected.
"Why are you telling me all this?" she asked.
Vanessa looked at her for a long moment.
Then said—
"Because I want to see what you do with it."
That wasn't comforting.
At all.
"You're not trying to stop me?" Lina asked.
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"If I wanted to stop you, I would've done it already."
That sent a chill down Lina's spine.
"But I'm curious," Vanessa added. "You're different. And I want to see if that difference actually means something… or if you'll break like everyone else."
Lina met her gaze.
And this time—
She didn't look away.
"I won't."
Vanessa studied her.
Then smiled.
A real one this time.
"Good."
---
When Lina walked away, her thoughts felt heavier than ever.
Not clearer.
Not easier.
Just… real.
Everything Vanessa said lingered.
Echoed.
And for the first time—
This didn't feel like something she could sit with much longer.
---
As she stepped around the corner—
She froze.
Adrian.
Ethan.
Both there.
Waiting.
Of course they were.
"You said you wouldn't come," she said softly.
Adrian shrugged slightly. "I said I wouldn't interfere."
Ethan crossed his arms. "Did she say anything weird?"
Lina let out a small breath.
"She said everything."
They exchanged a glance.
"Is that good or bad?" Adrian asked.
Lina looked at both of them.
Really looked.
And this time—
Something in her expression had changed.
"I think…" she said slowly, "I'm running out of time."
Neither of them spoke.
Because they felt it too.
---
And somewhere, just beneath the surface—
Silence was beginning to crack.
And when it finally broke—
It wouldn't be quiet.
