Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Echoes That Shouldn’t Exist

The path didn't spiral this time. It descended straight down. No turns. No breaks. Just a narrow stone passage dropping deeper into the dark. Ren moved carefully, one hand on the wall, the other gripping the linked fragments. Their pulse guided him—slow, steady, almost aware. "…You're leading me," he muttered. The fragments pulsed once. Ren didn't like that. The air changed as he went deeper. Not just cold—thin, like the world was stretched. Even his footsteps echoed wrong. "…This place keeps getting worse." A faint whisper echoed ahead. Not the same voice. Softer. Broken. "…hello…?" Ren froze. That wasn't in his head. "…Who's there?" No answer. Then—"…help…" Faint. Weak. Human. Ren's grip tightened. "…Trap." The fragments pulsed slower this time. Uneasy. Ren narrowed his eyes. "…Yeah. I feel it too." He moved forward anyway. The passage opened into a long corridor. The walls were smooth, reflective, catching the faint glow from the fragments. Ren stepped in—and stopped. His reflection stared back. But it didn't move. A chill ran through him. "…Not real." He stepped forward. The reflection lagged—then moved wrong. The walls shifted. More reflections appeared. Not just him. Others. People. Some standing. Some crawling. Some watching. "…You shouldn't be here…" a voice whispered. It came from everywhere. Ren's core pulsed sharply. Warning. The fragments flared faintly. "…Illusions?" "No." The answer came instantly. Cold. Close. "They are what remains." The reflections pressed closer to the surface. Faces. Eyes wide. Empty. "…Echoes," the voice said. "Of those who came before you." Ren's jaw tightened. "…And didn't make it." "Yes." One reflection lunged out of the wall. Ren stepped back as it clawed at him, half-solid, half-shadow. Its touch scraped his arm. "Ghh—!" He struck. Dark energy surged. The figure shattered. But more came. Dozens. "…Great." "They do not live," the voice said. "They do not tire." The corridor filled with movement. The echoes rushed him. Ren exhaled slowly. His core pulsed. The fragments answered. "…Then I'll break them faster." The first wave hit. Ren moved—cleaner, sharper. His strikes were precise now. One shattered. Then another. But more replaced them. Their movements improved. Slightly faster. Slightly smarter. "…They're learning." "They remember," the voice said. Ren ducked, pivoted, struck again. "…Then they should've survived." The fragments pulsed faster. Ren's breathing grew heavier—but his movements improved. He could see it now. Patterns. Timing. Intent. "…I can read you." A faint grin appeared. The echoes surged again. Ren stepped forward. Not back. Into them. His energy changed—no longer bursting, but shaping. A thin layer formed over his arm. Controlled. Sharp. "…Let's try this." An echo lunged. Ren cut. Clean. The figure split instantly. Ren blinked. "…Oh." The fragments pulsed. Approval. More came. Ren moved faster. Cut. Shatter. Erase. One after another. The corridor filled with fading fragments. The last wave rushed him. Ren stepped forward. Energy surged. Focused. "…Clear." He swung. A wide arc of dark energy tore through everything ahead. The entire wave shattered. Silence returned. The reflections faded. Gone. Ren stood alone, breathing hard. "…That's getting easier." "Because you are changing," the voice replied. Ren didn't argue. He looked at the fragments. Their pulse was stronger now. Steady. Connected. "…Yeah. I can feel it." The path ahead opened further. Darker. Deeper. Waiting. Ren lifted his head. His eyes sharper than before. "…Let's keep going."
