Chapter 38 - Chapter 35: The Third That Waits

Silence didn't last.

It never did in a place like this.

The moment the creature dissolved, the chamber felt… different. Not lighter. Not safer. Just quieter in a way that made everything else stand out.

Ren stood still, breathing slowly, his chest rising and falling as he forced his body to calm down. His core pulsed unevenly, fragments reacting to the fight, to the space, to something deeper he still didn't understand.

"…That's two," he said quietly.

"Don't say it like that," Lira muttered. "Like you're counting."

"…I am."

"That's exactly the problem."

Ren gave a faint smirk, but it didn't reach his eyes. Because he felt it. Still there.

"…It's not over," he said.

Lira's grip tightened. "…I figured."

The chamber didn't shake this time. Didn't crack. Didn't split open. Instead, the shadows deepened.

Ren's eyes narrowed. "…That's new."

The faint runes on the walls flickered again—but weaker this time. Not reacting. Suppressing. Like something didn't want them active.

Then a presence. Not rising. Not forming. Already there.

Lira felt it immediately. "…Ren…"

"I know."

It wasn't like the others. No heavy steps. No visible form. Just pressure. Everywhere.

"…Show yourself," Ren said quietly.

For a moment, nothing happened. Then something answered. Not a voice. A shift.

The shadows behind them moved. Both of them turned instantly. There was nothing. Then there was.

A figure. Not tall. Not massive. But wrong.

Its form didn't stay still. Not like the last one. Not like anything before. It flickered, edges breaking and reforming like it couldn't decide what it was supposed to be.

"…That's worse," Lira whispered.

Ren didn't disagree.

The figure didn't step forward. Didn't move closer. But the pressure increased. Ren's breathing slowed—not by choice. Something was interfering.

"…You're different," he said.

The figure tilted slightly. Not its head. Its entire form.

"…Closer," it said.

The voice wasn't layered. Wasn't heavy. It was quiet. Too quiet. Like it was inside his head instead of the air.

Ren's eyes sharpened. "…Closer to what?"

A pause. Then: "…Completion."

His core reacted instantly. Hard. "Ghh—!"

Lira stepped forward. "Ren!"

He held up a hand, stopping her. "…I'm fine." A lie. But he stayed standing.

The figure flickered again, then moved. Not fast. Not slow. It just appeared closer.

Ren's body tensed immediately. "…You don't move like the others."

"…Movement is unnecessary," it replied softly.

Ren exhaled. "…Yeah. I'm starting to hear that a lot."

The air shifted again. Not distortion. Not pressure. Something else. Ren felt it first—not around him. Inside. His core pulsed wrong.

"…What are you doing?" he muttered.

"…Observing," the figure replied.

Pain spread through his chest. Not sharp. Not violent. Deep. Like something was being examined.

"Ren, something's wrong—!"

"I know!"

He forced his core to respond, mana flickering weakly around his hand. But it didn't feel stable. Didn't feel controlled.

The figure tilted again. Closer now. "…Incomplete," it said.

Ren's teeth clenched. "…Yeah. I know that already."

"…But adaptable."

That word. His core pulsed harder. The fragments reacted. And for a moment, everything aligned.

Ren's eyes widened slightly. "…You're not attacking."

"…No."

"…You're testing something."

Silence. Then: "…Yes."

Ren let out a slow breath. "…Then I guess I should show you something."

The figure didn't respond. But it didn't move away either. That was enough.

Ren stepped forward. Not rushing. Not forcing. Controlled. His core pulsed. Fragments aligned—not perfectly, not completely, but enough.

"…You want to see if I can reach it," he said quietly.

The figure flickered once. "…Show me."

Ren didn't hesitate. He stepped in. No wild energy. No unstable surge. Just focus. His hand rose, and he struck. Not the body. Not the space. Something deeper.

For a moment, nothing happened. Then the figure flickered violently. For the first time, it reacted.

"…Interesting," it whispered.

Ren's eyes sharpened. Because now he understood. This one wasn't trying to kill him. It was waiting for him to reach it.
