Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Night of Silent Blades

The academy did not sleep.

Even when the halls fell quiet and the lanterns dimmed to a soft glow, something always lingered beneath the surface—watching, waiting, calculating. Power gathered here, and where power gathered, so did those who sought to control it… or destroy it.

Lucien Kael von Kurothar stood alone in his chamber, the curtains half-drawn as moonlight spilled across the polished floor. The night was still. Too still.

His eyes shifted slightly.

"…They're here."

It wasn't instinct.

It wasn't a guess.

It was certainty.

Ever since the system's synchronization had reached 21%, something had changed within him. His perception had sharpened—not just physically, but something deeper. The world itself felt… clearer. Threads of mana, faint movements in the air, even intent—

He could feel it.

And right now—

He felt killing intent.

Faint.

Controlled.

Professional.

Lucien didn't move immediately. Instead, he walked calmly toward the window, as if unaware, his reflection faintly visible in the glass.

"…Three," he counted silently.

One above.

One behind the door.

One outside the balcony.

Well-coordinated.

Not amateurs.

"…So it begins."

The moment that thought settled—

The window shattered silently.

Not loudly—no crash, no obvious break. Just a precise, controlled entry.

At the same time, the door opened without a sound.

And from the shadows—

They appeared.

Figures cloaked in black, faces hidden, their presence suppressed so completely that an ordinary noble would never have noticed them.

Assassins.

Lucien exhaled softly.

"…You picked the wrong night."

They didn't respond.

They moved.

Fast.

Blades aimed directly for vital points—no hesitation, no warning.

Lucien stepped forward.

Not back.

Forward.

The first blade passed where his neck had been a moment before. He tilted his body slightly, letting the strike miss by the smallest margin.

The second came from behind.

He didn't turn.

His hand moved—

And caught the attacker's wrist mid-strike.

A sharp twist.

A crack.

The assassin collapsed without a sound.

The third hesitated—

Just for a fraction of a second.

That was enough.

Lucien's gaze shifted.

Cold.

Precise.

"Too slow."

He moved.

Not like before.

Not controlled.

Not measured.

But overwhelming.

A single step—

And he was already in front of the last assassin.

Their eyes widened.

They hadn't seen him move.

His hand raised slightly—

Mana gathered.

Not visibly.

Not dramatically.

But densely.

"…Sleep."

The word was quiet.

But final.

The assassin dropped instantly.

Silence returned.

Lucien stood still for a moment, his expression unchanged.

Then—

The system activated.

[Threat Eliminated]

[Hostile Intent Detected and Neutralized]

[Synchronization Progress: 28%]

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"…So even this counts."

Conflict.

Danger.

Survival.

All of it fed into the system.

But something else caught his attention.

A new line.

[New Function Unlocked: Perception Field]

Lucien blinked once.

And suddenly—

The world changed.

A faint, invisible field spread outward from him, expanding beyond the walls of his room, beyond the corridor… mapping everything within its range.

Movements.

Presence.

Intent.

He could feel them.

Students asleep.

Guards patrolling.

And—

More.

"…So they didn't come alone."

Lucien turned his gaze toward the academy grounds.

Far below—

Two more figures stood hidden in the shadows.

Watching.

Waiting.

Observers.

"…Not assassins."

Which meant—

This wasn't just an attack.

It was a test.

By morning, the academy was in quiet chaos.

Nothing was announced publicly, but rumors spread quickly.

"Something happened in the noble quarters…"

"Security was breached…"

"Someone was targeted…"

Lucien walked through the halls as usual, his expression calm, his presence unchanged.

As if nothing had happened.

But that only made it worse.

Because those who knew…

Understood.

Aurelia approached him the moment she saw him.

"You were attacked," she said quietly, her tone sharp.

Lucien glanced at her.

"…Word travels fast."

Her eyes narrowed.

"Don't deflect. Are you injured?"

"…No."

A brief pause.

Then—

"How many?"

Lucien answered without hesitation.

"Three."

Her expression tightened.

"…And?"

"They're no longer a problem."

Silence.

Aurelia exhaled slowly.

"…As expected."

But there was something else in her eyes now.

Concern.

Not for politics.

Not for reputation.

But for him.

"You realize what this means," she said.

Lucien nodded slightly.

"…Yes."

It had begun.

The moment he stepped into the academy, he had become a target.

But now—

They had acted.

Which meant—

The real game had started.

Later that day, within a restricted chamber deep inside the academy, several high-ranking figures gathered.

"The attempt failed."

"Obviously."

"The question is… what do we do now?"

Silence lingered.

Then—

An older voice spoke.

"…We proceed as planned."

Another figure leaned forward.

"And if he becomes uncontrollable?"

A pause.

Cold.

Calculated.

"…Then we eliminate him."

Back on the academy grounds, Lucien stood beneath the shade of a large stone archway, his gaze distant.

Freya approached from one side.

Aurelia from the other.

Neither spoke at first.

But the tension was clear.

Freya broke the silence.

"You were attacked."

Lucien glanced at her.

"…You too?"

She smirked slightly.

"Not yet. Guess I'm not important enough."

Aurelia frowned slightly. "This isn't a joke."

Freya shrugged.

"It never is."

A brief silence followed.

Then—

Lucien spoke.

"…This won't be the last time."

Both of them looked at him.

"And next time," he continued, his voice calm but firm, "they won't send weak ones."

Freya's eyes lit up slightly.

"…Good."

Aurelia sighed softly.

"…You're both insane."

Lucien gave a faint smile.

"…No."

His gaze shifted slightly.

Focused.

Sharp.

"We're just prepared."

As the sun began to set once more, casting long shadows across the academy, Lucien stood alone again.

But this time—

He wasn't just observing the world.

He was feeling it.

Controlling it.

The perception field expanded quietly, covering everything within reach.

Nothing could approach unnoticed now.

Nothing could hide.

And yet—

Even within that awareness—

He felt it.

Something distant.

Something vast.

Something… watching him.

The system flickered.

[Synchronization Progress: 32%]

[Warning: External Observation Intensifying]

Lucien's expression hardened.

"…So you're still there."

No answer came.

But he didn't expect one.

Not yet.

Far beyond the reach of the five great powers…

In a place untouched by time—

A massive, ancient presence stirred once more.

Its voice echoed through the void.

"…He has begun to resist."

Another answered.

"…Then accelerate the convergence."

A pause.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

"…Before he becomes something we cannot control."

Back in the academy—

Lucien looked up at the darkening sky.

For the first time—

His calm expression faded.

Just slightly.

"…Try."
