The silence in the clearing was a physical weight, pressing down on Naruto's shoulders. Kage's words echoed in the hollow space the system's absence had left behind. Subject Zero. First data point. The full program is about to be rolled out. He wasn't a hero. He wasn't even a person to them. He was a lab rat, and the experiment was expanding.
A soft thud behind him made Naruto spin, a kunai instinctively in his hand. Kakashi landed in a crouch, his visible eye narrowed and scanning the empty space where Kage had stood.
"Naruto! I felt a massive chakra spike, then… nothing. What happened here? Where's the command-level threat the system warned us about?" Kakashi's gaze swept over his student, taking in his pale face and the tremor in his hands. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
For a moment, Naruto considered lying. How could he even begin to explain the cosmic horror of his situation? Oh, by the way, sensei, my awesome power-up is actually a tracking device for a shadowy organization that's probably watching us right now. But the look of genuine concern in Kakashi's eye, the unwavering trust he had always shown him, broke down the wall of fear.
"He was here," Naruto said, his voice barely a whisper. "His name was Kage. He's… he's with the Syndicate." The words tumbled out in a frantic rush. "They're the ones who made the system, Kakashi-sensei. It's not a gift, it's a tool. An experiment. And I'm… I'm the first one. Subject Zero."
He explained everything—the system sever, the hollow feeling, Kage's final, chilling warning. As he spoke, Kakashi's easygoing demeanor evaporated, replaced by the cold, hard focus of an elite ANBU captain. He didn't interrupt, he just listened, his mind processing the implications with terrifying speed.
When Naruto finished, Kakashi was silent for a long moment, his gaze fixed on the mist-shrouded bridge in the distance. "So, this entire mission… Gato, the mercenaries… it was all just a stage for them to test you?"
Naruto nodded miserably. "And now they're 'rolling out the full program.' I don't know what that means, but it can't be good."
"It means we're no longer just dealing with a greedy shipping magnate," Kakashi said, his voice grim. He placed a reassuring hand on Naruto's shoulder. "You did the right thing telling me, Naruto. This changes everything. But it doesn't change our mission. We still have to protect the bridge. Come on, we're running out of time."
With a final, wary glance at the surrounding forest, Kakashi and Naruto sprinted towards the bridge, the new, terrible knowledge a heavy burden between them.
The scene on the Great Naruto Bridge was chaos. Dozens of Gato's hired thugs, armed with crude swords and rusty pipes, swarmed the scaffolding, trying to break through the desperate defense of the bridge workers. But in their path stood an unmovable wall of pink and black.
Sakura was a whirlwind of controlled fury. Her precise chakra control, once used only for medical ninjutsu and tree-climbing, was now a weapon. She stamped her foot on the wooden planks, channeling her chakra into the structure. A section of the scaffold buckled, sending five thugs screaming into the churning water below. Another thug lunged at her with a club; she sidestepped, her hand flashing out to strike his elbow with pinpoint accuracy. There was a sickening crack, and the man's arm went limp.
Beside her, Sasuke was a phantom of death. His Sharingan spun, predicting every move, every feint. He moved with a liquid grace that was both beautiful and terrifying. A thug swung a wild haymaker; Sasuke flowed under it, his leg sweeping the man's feet out from under him. Before he could hit the ground, Sasuke had driven the hilt of his kunai into the man's temple, dropping him instantly. He was a one-man army, his movements efficient, his expression a mask of cold concentration.
They were holding, but they were being stretched thin. For every thug they took down, two more seemed to take his place.
"Sasuke! Behind you!" Sakura shouted, her voice strained.
Sasuke turned just in time to see a burly man raise a heavy kanabo over Tazuna's head. The old man froze, his eyes wide with terror. Before Sasuke could close the distance, a blur of orange and black shot past him.
"Get away from him, you bastard!" Naruto roared, his fist connecting with the man's jaw with a sickening crunch. The thug flew backward, crashing into a pile of lumber.
"Naruto! Kakashi-sensei!" Sakura exclaimed, a wave of relief washing over her.
"Sorry we're late," Kakashi said, landing beside them. "The situation has… escalated." He didn't have time to explain. "Sasuke, Sakura, fall back to the center of the bridge. Form a perimeter around the workers. Naruto, with me. We end this, now."
The team regrouped, their morale soaring at their sensei's arrival. They moved as a single unit, a well-oiled machine of death and defense. Kakashi's Lightning Blade cut a swathe through the enemy, while Naruto, fueled by a mix of rage and fear, unleashed a barrage of shadow clones, each one a brawler fighting with desperate intensity.
Within minutes, the tide had turned. The remaining thugs, seeing their comrades decimated by the overwhelming force of the Konoha shinobi, broke and ran, scrambling back towards the shore.
It was over.
Panting, Naruto stood among the fallen, his chest heaving. The quest timer in the corner of his vision had stopped with thirty seconds to spare.
[PRIMARY OBJECTIVE COMPLETE: PROTECT TAUNA AND BRIDGE WORKERS] [REWARD PENDING: SECONDARY OBJECTIVE INCOMPLETE]
"The command-level threat," Naruto said, looking at Kakashi. "We haven't found him yet."
As if on cue, a slow, mocking clap echoed from the far end of the bridge. A small, portly man in a fine suit stood flanked by two hulking figures. It was Gato, a smug, self-satisfied grin plastered on his face.
"Bravo, bravo! What an impressive performance," Gato sneered, his voice dripping with condescension. "You've certainly earned your pay, Konoha dogs. Too bad it's all for nothing."
"Gato!" Tazuna snarled, his face contorted in rage. "You coward! Face us yourself!"
Gato laughed, a high-pitched, grating sound. "Face you? Don't be ridiculous. I'm a businessman. And business is good. My associates were very impressed with the data your friend provided." He pointed a chubby finger directly at Naruto. "They paid me a handsome bonus to let them run their little test. And now, they've given me a new set of tools to ensure this bridge is never finished."
The two hulking figures beside him stepped forward. They were different from the other thugs. They wore the same dark grey armor as Kage, and their eyes held a vacant, soulless look. One of them cracked his knuckles, and a faint, dark aura, similar to the one Kage had used, flickered around his fists.
Kakashi's eye widened. "Enhanced soldiers…"
"So, you're the ones working with the Syndicate," Naruto growled, his hands clenching into fists. The system was back online, a comforting presence in his mind, but Kage's warning made it feel tainted.
"The who?" Gato scoffed. "I don't know their names. I just know they pay well and deliver results. Now, kill them. Kill them all."
The two enhanced soldiers moved. They were faster than the thugs, stronger, their movements unnaturally precise. One lunged at Sasuke, his fist wrapped in that same void-like chakra. Sasuke's Sharingan tracked the movement, but the sheer speed was overwhelming. He barely managed to raise his sword to block the strike. The force of the impact sent him skidding backward, his feet digging grooves into the wood.
"These guys are on another level!" Sasuke grunted, his arms trembling from the effort.
The other soldier went for Sakura, who met him with a chakra-enhanced punch. Her fist connected with his chest, but it was like hitting solid steel. The man didn't even flinch. He simply backhanded her, sending her sprawling.
Naruto's blood boiled. "Shadow Clone Jutsu!" A dozen clones appeared, swarming the soldier attacking Sasuke. But the man moved like a whirlwind, his fists and feet a blur of motion, dispelling the clones with single, precise strikes. It wasn't just brute force; it was calculated, efficient, almost… systematic.
Naruto watched, his mind racing. This was it. This was the "full program." These weren't just thugs; they were using a corrupted version of his power. And then, he saw it. As the soldier fighting Sasuke twisted to avoid a fireball, his head turned for a split second, and Naruto's system interface flickered.
Next to the soldier's head, a new icon appeared. It wasn't the standard red enemy marker. It was a stylized, black serpent, coiled and ready to strike. The system was identifying something new, something it wasn't programmed for. The soldier landed a devastating kick on Sasuke, sending him crashing into a support pillar.
"Sasuke!" Naruto shouted, a spike of fear lancing through him.
The system finally processed the new data. A new alert flashed in Naruto's mind, short, simple, and utterly terrifying.
