Chapter 5 - First Alliance

...

The smell of roasted meat and fresh bread filled the Vance estate's dining hall as Lyonel tucked into his breakfast—though his eyes were glued to the map spread across the table before him. Aether Logic had been working overtime all morning, mapping every ley line within a ten-mile radius of the estate and flagging potential trouble spots.

"Scan complete," the skill chimed in his mind. "Minor corruption detected in three additional locations. Closest is the old mill two miles east—ley line convergence point showing early instability."

"Great," Lyonel muttered, spearing a piece of sausage. "First the grove, now a mill. Does every broken thing in this world have my name on it?"

"Probability of 'your name' being the solution: 89.7%," Aether Logic replied dryly. "Also—your sister Seraphina is approaching. She's attempting to look casual but is clearly excited."

Lyonel looked up just as Seraphina slipped into the seat beside him, her copper hair tied back in a neat braid. She set a leather-bound book on the table—its cover carved with intricate runes he recognized immediately.

"Found this in my family's archives," she said, pushing it toward him. "Father says it's about 'convergence weaving'—combining different magics into one effect. Thought you'd want to see it."

Lyonel's eyes lit up as he flipped through the pages. "This is perfect! It's like… like merging code libraries to build something bigger than the sum of its parts." He grinned. "I was just thinking we could test a combo weave—want to try?"

...

They snuck out to the training yard after breakfast, where the morning sun warmed the grass under their feet. Seraphina had brought her usual fire and water magics—flames dancing at her fingertips, water swirling in the air beside her.

"Okay," Lyonel said, pulling out his carving tools. "Here's the plan—I'll trace runes to stabilize the aether flow, and you'll feed your magic into the pattern. Think of it like… like a dance where we both lead at the sametime."

"A dance?" Seraphina raised an eyebrow, but a small smile played at her lips. "I suppose I can manage that. Though I don't know if your 'silly duck' tricks count as proper choreography."

"Hey, a well-placed duck is never wrong," Lyonel shot back, already tracing runes into a flat stone on the ground. Silver light spread from his fingers as he worked, weaving lines that connected to where Seraphina stood.

"Ready when you are, Flame Princess," he said, stepping back.

Seraphina took a deep breath, her green eyes focusing as fire and water swirled around her hands. She sent streams of each toward the stone—and the moment they touched Lyonel's runes, the magic twisted together.

Instead of clashing, fire and water merged into a shimmering spiral that hovered in the air, casting warm, clean light across the yard.

"Whoa," Seraphina breathed. "It's… steady. No wild surges, no strain."

"Told you," Lyonel grinned. "Magic's better when you don't have to do all the work yourself. Plus, this one's got a surprise—watch this."

He tapped the spiral with one finger, and it split into dozens of tiny, glowing shapes—fireflies that flitted around them, leaving trails of silver light in their wake.

"Fireflies?" Seraphina laughed—genuine and bright. "You really do love your silly touches, don't you?"

"Silly is just another word for memorable," Lyonel winked. "Besides—who wouldn't want fireflies that glow like tiny stars?"

...

As they watched the fireflies dance, movement in the treeline caught Lyonel's eye. A small figure emerged—young, with tawny fur dusted across her cheeks and antler-like horns curving from her temples.

She carried a wooden staff carved with beast-shaped runes, and her eyes went wide when she saw the glowing lights.

"You're the one who fixed the grove!" she called out, hurrying over. "I'm Kaelia—from the Shadowclaw Pack. We felt the aether shift and had to see who was behind it."

Lyonel stood up, grinning. "Lyonel Vance—professional magic nerd and part-time duck enthusiast. Want to see a trick?"

He carved a quick rune into a leaf, and it floated up to hover before Kaelia's face—shaping itself into the outline of a deer that matched the pattern on her staff. She gasped, reaching out to touch it gently.

"It feels like home," she whispered.

"That's the point," Lyonel said calmly. "Magic should fit you—not the other way around. Want to help us make sure more places feel like 'home' again?"

Kaelia nodded eagerly, and as she stepped closer, Aether Logic hummed in Lyonel's mind.

"Multiple affinities detected in proximity," the skill noted. "Potential for 'Alliance Weave'—combining three magics into a single stable pattern."

"Three's better than two," Lyonel said, grinning at both girls. "How do you two feel about testing out something I call 'The Sacred Stable'—because it keeps magic steady, and also… well, stables are for keeping things safe, right?"

Seraphina rolled her eyes but smiled. "Only you would name a powerful weave after farm buildings."

"Only you would underestimate farm buildings," Lyonel shot back. "Now come on—let's build something worth remembering."

As the three of them stood together, hands joined, silver light spread from Lyonel's fingers, weaving through Seraphina's fire and water, through Kaelia's beast-touched magic—creating a glow so warm and bright it felt like dawn breaking over the entire estate.
