Chapter 7 - The First Gathering

The morning after their trip to the village, Lyonel stood in the Vance estate's main hall, staring at the large oak table where his family usually held meetings.

Today, though, the chairs were filled with faces both familiar and new—Seraphina in her red-and-gold robes, Kaelia leaning on her carved staff, Mina clutching a small pouch of herbs, and even a few members of the Shadowclaw Pack who'd traveled with Kaelia to see what came next.

"Aether Logic: All attendees accounted for," the skill noted in his mind. "Emotional patterns indicate excitement mixed with uncertainty. Suggest opening with a unifying statement."

Lyonel climbed onto a small stool so he could see everyone clearly, his white hair falling across his forehead as he grinned.

"Okay, everyone—thanks for coming to what I'm calling 'The First Official Weave and Save the World Club Meeting.' Though we can vote on a better name later. Maybe 'The Aether Avengers'? Or 'Team Quack'? "

Seraphina rolled her eyes but smiled. "We are not calling ourselves Team Quack."

"We'll put it to a vote," Lyonel shot back, then his expression shifted to calm focus.

"But for real—you all know why we're here. The grove was cursed. The mill was broken. Mina got sick. And those aren't the only places in Aethermoor that need help. Aether Logic has mapped twelve more corruption sites within fifty miles—and that's just what we can see right now."

He unfurled a large map across the table, pointing to colored pins marking each location.

"Red pins are urgent—like the old mining camp north of here, where corruption is seeping into the soil and poisoning crops. Yellow are stable for now but could get worse. And blue… well, blue is a mystery. Aether Logic can't fully scan it yet."

Kaelia leaned forward, her amber eyes fixed on the blue pin in the far northeast corner of the map.

"That's the Whispering Peaks. My pack says no one who goes there comes back the same. The aether there… it talks."

"Analysis: Whispering Peaks site shows abnormal aether resonance—likely tied to ancient Spellweaver ruins," Aether Logic chimed in. "Danger level: Moderate to high. Not recommended for current skill levels."

"Which means we start with the urgent ones first," Lyonel said firmly. "The mining camp is only fifteen miles away, and villagers there are already reporting sick livestock and failing harvests. We can hit it hard in two days—give ourselves time to plan and prep."

"But how do we work together when our magics are so different? " asked Torvin, the wolf-eared Beastkin scout who'd joined them from the pack. "My magic is for tracking and speed. Mina's is… well, we don't even know what Mina's magic can do yet."

Mina shifted in her seat, her hands trembling slightly as she set her pouch on the table. "I… I've always been able to feel when corruption is near," she said softly. "When the water at the mill went bad, I could sense it before anyone else got sick. And sometimes… sometimes I can make the dark stuff pull back, if I focus hard enough."

She held out her hand, and a small purple light flickered at her fingertips—not sickly like the corruption they'd seen, but bright and steady. Seraphina gasped, leaning closer to look.

"Void magic," she breathed. "But it's… pure. I've only ever heard stories of corrupted void magic."

"Aether Logic: Scan complete," the skill reported. "Mina's ability is 'Void Sense'—a rare affinity that lets her detect and manipulate corrupted aether without being harmed. Complementary to existing team skills."

"See? " Lyonel grinned, hopping down from his stool to stand beside Mina. "We've got Seraphina for elemental power, Kaelia for earth and beast connection, Mina for detecting corruption, and me for weaving it all together. Plus Torvin for scouting, and anyone else from the pack or village who wants to join us."

He walked around the table, clapping his hands together. "Here's the plan for the mining camp: Torvin will scout ahead to map the area and find where the corruption is strongest. Mina will confirm the source once we're there. Kaelia will help us ground the weave to keep it stable. will help us ground the weave to keep it stable. Seraphina will cycle fire and water to purify the soil and water. And I'll carve the runes to tie everything together—plus add some fun features, of course."

"Fun features?" Kaelia raised an eyebrow.

"Trust me—you'll love them," Lyonel said with a wink. "Now, let's spend the next two days training together. We need to make sure our alliance weave works even when we're under pressure. And Seraphina—you said your father has more books on ancient weaving techniques? I want to take a look at them before we leave."

 ...

That afternoon, the group moved to the training yard behind the estate, where Lyonel had already set up practice runes on large flat stones.

Seraphina stood at one end, fire and water swirling around her hands, while Kaelia pressed her palms to the ground, sending roots spreading across the grass.

Mina closed her eyes, her purple light flickering as she focused on sensing the flow of aether around them.

"Okay—on three," Lyonel called out, standing at the center stone. "One… two… three! "

Seraphina sent her magic streaming toward the center. Kaelia's roots lifted from the ground, weaving around the elemental streams.

Mina's purple light pulsed, guiding the flow away from any hidden instability. Lyonel carved runes as fast as he could, silver light connecting everything into a single pattern.

For a moment, it worked perfectly—a warm golden glow spread across the yard, and flowers bloomed in the grass where nothing had grown before.

But then the weave wavered, the light flickering as the different magics threatened to pull apart.

"Too much fire! " Mina cried out, her eyes snapping open. "It's pushing against the earth magic!"

Lyonel acted fast, carving a quick adjustment rune.

"Seraphina—pull back the flame just a little! Kaelia—send more energy to the top of the weave, not the bottom!"

They adjusted their focus, and the glow stabilized, growing brighter and steadier than before.

Small glowing rabbits—carved from the weave itself—hopped across the grass, leaving trails of clean aether in their wake.

"Rabbits?" Torvin laughed, watching one hop past his feet. "Really, Lyonel?"

"They're not just rabbits," Lyonel said proudly. "They're 'Aether Scouts'—they'll warn us if corruption starts to spread again. Plus, they're cute. Everyone likes cute things."

As the sun began to set, the group sat on the grass, eating bread and cheese while the glowing rabbits hopped around them. Seraphina leaned back on her hands, looking up at the sky.

"My father always said magic was about power—about being stronger than everyone else," she said quietly. "But this… this feels different. It feels like we're building something instead of just fighting."

"That's the point," Lyonel said, tossing a piece of bread to one of the rabbits (which promptly ate it, then did a little hop of thanks). "Magic shouldn't be about who's the strongest. It should be about making things better—for everyone."

Mina smiled, her purple light glowing softly as she watched the rabbits play. "I've never felt like I belonged anywhere before," she said. "But here… here I feel like I can actually help."

Kaelia put a hand on her shoulder. "You're one of us now. The Shadowclaw Pack will protect you—and we'll all protect each other."

Lyonel stood up, brushing grass from his clothes. "Alright team—rest up tonight. Tomorrow we train harder, and the next day we head to the mining camp. And remember—if things get tough, we stick together. That's what makes us stronger than any single mage's power."

As everyone packed up to head inside, Aether Logic spoke in his mind one last time.

"Team cohesion at 92%," the skill reported. "Recommended next step: Finalize supply list and confirm scouting route. Also—consider trademarking 'Team Quack' before someone else does."

Lyonel grinned to himself, tucking his carving tools into his pocket. "Noted. Now let's go see if we can find those books Seraphina mentioned. The more we know, the better chance we have of saving the mining camp—and every other place that needsus."
