Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: What Remains After the Storm

The wind had calmed.

Not silent.

Not gone.

But… at peace.

Elian stood in the middle of what used to be a street.

Now—

It was broken stone, scattered debris, and cracks that stretched like scars across the ground.

Vireon had survived.

But not untouched.

People slowly began to emerge.

From behind broken walls.

From beneath shelters.

From the shadows of fear.

"…it's over?" someone asked.

"No… it can't be…"

Elian exhaled slowly.

"…it's gone."

The wind brushed gently past him.

"…for now…"

He closed his eyes briefly.

"…yeah…"

A voice called out—

"Elian!"

He turned.

Lyra jogged toward him, brushing dust off her arms, clearly exhausted—but alive.

"…you're still standing," she said, catching her breath.

Elian smirked slightly.

"…barely."

She laughed.

"…not bad for someone who didn't even know what he was doing yesterday."

He shrugged.

"…still don't."

A brief silence.

Then—

Her expression softened slightly.

"…you saved a lot of people."

Elian looked around.

The city.

The damage.

The survivors.

"…we all did."

Kael approached slowly.

His steps calm, unaffected as always.

But his eyes—

Were different.

He looked at Elian.

"…you crossed the line today."

Elian frowned.

"…what line?"

Kael stopped in front of him.

"The line between survival…"

A pause.

"…and control."

Elian glanced at his hands.

"…it didn't feel like control."

Kael nodded slightly.

"Because you're not used to it yet."

The wind whispered softly—

"…you are changing…"

Elian clenched his fists slightly.

"…I can feel that."

A group of people began gathering nearby.

Watching him.

Not with fear.

But with something else.

Recognition.

"…they know," Lyra said quietly.

Elian looked at her.

"…know what?"

She crossed her arms.

"…that you're not normal."

He sighed.

"…yeah, I figured."

Kael turned away slightly.

"That won't stay a secret," he said.

Elian's expression hardened.

"…I don't want it to."

Both Kael and Lyra looked at him.

"…I'm done hiding."

The wind surged gently.

"…then your path will only get harder…"

Elian nodded.

"…I know."

A long silence followed.

The sky above was now clear.

Peaceful.

But it didn't feel safe.

Not anymore.

"…Kael," Elian said.

He stopped.

"…what was that thing?"

Kael didn't turn around.

"…a fragment."

Elian frowned.

"…of what?"

A pause.

"…something much bigger."

A chill ran through him.

"…so that wasn't even the real enemy?"

"No," Kael replied.

"…it was just the beginning."

Lyra let out a small breath.

"…great… just what we needed."

Elian looked up at the sky again.

Clear.

But now—

He knew better.

"…then next time," he said quietly,

"…I'll be stronger."

The wind circled him once more.

Stronger than before.

Not guiding.

Not protecting.

But standing with him.

For the first time—

Not as a voice.

But as something equal.

"…we will be."

Elian smiled faintly.

"…yeah."

Behind him—

The ruins of the past.

Ahead of him—

A world far bigger than he ever imagined.

And somewhere beyond the sky—

Something was waiting.
