Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The One Who Controls

"Monsters evolve… but the ones who control them are far worse."

---

The Hunter's roar still echoed in Arjun's ears.

---

Even after they stopped running.

---

Even after they reached a quieter part of the safe zone.

---

It didn't leave.

---

That sound—

---

It wasn't just rage.

---

It was awareness.

---

Arjun leaned against a metal wall, breathing hard.

---

"What the hell was that thing…?" he muttered again.

---

The man beside him didn't answer immediately.

---

Instead—

he checked his gun.

Reloaded.

Calm.

---

Too calm.

---

"That…" he finally said—

---

"was the future."

---

Arjun looked at him.

---

"Future?"

---

The man met his eyes.

---

"If that was outside the walls…"

---

Pause.

---

"Then inside won't stay normal for long."

---

A chill ran down Arjun's spine.

---

Before he could ask anything—

---

A loud voice echoed across the zone.

---

"ALL UNITS—REPORT!"

---

Instantly—

movement changed.

---

Guards straightened.

People stopped talking.

Even the air felt tighter.

---

Arjun noticed it.

---

"Who's that?"

---

The man didn't look at him this time.

---

His eyes shifted toward a tall structure in the center of the zone.

---

A tower.

---

Arjun followed his gaze.

---

At the top—

someone stood.

---

Just a silhouette.

---

But even from this distance—

---

something felt… wrong.

---

Powerful.

---

Heavy.

---

"Stay quiet," the man said suddenly.

---

"Don't look too long."

---

Too late.

---

Arjun was already staring.

---

The figure didn't move.

---

Didn't shout.

---

Didn't signal.

---

But somehow—

---

everyone was listening.

---

Then—

---

the figure raised one hand.

---

Slowly.

---

And just like that—

---

the entire zone went silent.

---

Completely.

---

Arjun's heartbeat grew louder in his ears.

---

"What is this…?" he whispered.

---

The man answered this time.

---

Low.

---

Careful.

---

"Authority."

---

A pause.

---

Then—

---

"That's him."

---

Arjun's eyes narrowed.

---

"Who?"

---

The man finally said it.

---

Almost like he didn't want to.

---

"The one who runs this place."

---

Silence.

---

"The one who decides…"

---

"…who lives…"

---

"…and who doesn't."

---

Arjun felt something shift inside him.

---

"That's not a leader…" he muttered.

---

"That's a tyrant."

---

The man didn't respond.

---

But his silence—

---

was confirmation.

---

Suddenly—

---

a scream cut through the air.

---

Everyone turned.

---

Two guards dragged a man into the open.

---

He was struggling.

Bleeding.

Terrified.

---

"PLEASE—! I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!"

---

No one moved.

---

No one helped.

---

Arjun stepped forward instinctively—

---

but the man grabbed his arm.

---

"Don't."

---

"Why—"

---

"Because you'll die."

---

Arjun's jaw tightened.

---

The dragged man was forced to his knees.

---

Right in the center.

---

Directly under the tower.

---

The figure above—

---

still watching.

---

Still silent.

---

Then—

---

a single motion.

---

A small gesture.

---

That was enough.

---

BANG!

---

Gunshot.

---

The man dropped instantly.

---

Dead.

---

Silence.

---

No reaction.

---

No protest.

---

Nothing.

---

Arjun felt his blood boil.

---

"This is insane…"

---

The man leaned closer and whispered—

---

"This is control."

---

Arjun clenched his fists.

---

"This isn't survival…"

---

"This is slavery."

---

For the first time—

---

the man looked at him properly.

---

Long.

---

Carefully.

---

Then he said—

---

"Then survive long enough…"

---

"…to change it."

---

Silence.

---

Arjun's eyes shifted back to the tower.

---

The figure was still there.

---

Watching.

---

And this time—

---

Arjun felt it.

---

That gaze wasn't random.

---

It wasn't distant.

---

It was focused.

---

On him.

---

A sudden unease crawled up his spine.

---

"No way…"

---

The figure tilted its head slightly.

---

Almost curious.

---

Almost amused.

---

Then—

---

it turned.

---

And disappeared into the darkness.

---

Arjun stood there.

Frozen.

---

Because deep down—

---

he knew.

---

This wasn't coincidence.

---

This wasn't chance.

---

He had been noticed.

---

And in this world—

---

being noticed—

---

was the beginning of something far worse.

---

---

Arjun didn't look away.

---

His mind kept repeating one thing—

---

"He saw me."

---

He said it under his breath—

---

"He was looking at me…"

---

The man reacted instantly.

---

"Keep your voice down."

---

"You don't say things like that here."

---

Arjun turned to him.

---

"You're scared of him?"

---

Silence.

---

The man didn't answer directly.

---

Instead, he said quietly—

---

"Everyone is."

---

A pause.

---

"And the ones who aren't…"

---

He glanced at the body lying on the ground.

---

"…don't stay alive for long."

---

Arjun's anger started rising again.

---

"How long does this system last?"

---

The man replied without hesitation—

---

"Until someone strong enough breaks it."

---

Arjun looked him straight in the eye.

---

"I will."

---

Silence.

---

The man studied him.

---

For the first time—

---

seriously.

---

Then he let out a quiet breath.

---

"Everyone says that."

---

"Then they either die…"

---

"…or become part of it."

---

Arjun didn't hesitate.

---

"I won't do either."

---

From somewhere deeper inside the zone—

---

a roar echoed again.

---

Louder this time.

---

Closer.

---

People began to panic.

---

"Secure the gates!"

---

"Everyone inside!"

---

Arjun's instincts kicked in.

---

"It's coming back!"

---

The man shook his head.

---

"No…"

---

"This time…"

---

A pause.

---

"It's already inside."

---

Arjun froze.

---

"What—?"

---

Suddenly—

---

a guard was thrown across the air.

---

Like something had grabbed him—

---

and discarded him.

---

CRASH!

---

His body slammed into a metal wall.

---

Dead.

---

Screams erupted.

---

"IT'S INSIDE!"

---

The Hunter stepped out from the shadows.

---

Covered in blood.

---

And its eyes—

---

locked onto Arjun.

---

Again.

---

Recognition.

---

"Why is it looking at me…?" Arjun whispered.

---

The man stared at him.

---

And this time—

---

there was tension in his voice.

---

"Because…"

---

A pause.

---

"You're not normal."

---

Arjun froze.

---

"What does that mean?"

---

The Hunter took a step forward.

---

Then another.

---

Slow.

---

Deliberate.

---

Like everything else had disappeared.

---

Like there was only one target left.

---

Arjun.

---

"RUN!" the man shouted.

---

But this time—

---

Arjun didn't move.

---

He tightened his grip.

---

And stared right back at the creature.

---

"What do you want…?"

---

Silence.

---

The Hunter stopped.

---

Its head tilted slightly.

---

Like it was… thinking.

---

Arjun's heartbeat slowed.

---

Something felt wrong.

---

This didn't feel like a fight.

---

This felt like—

---

something else.

---

Then—

---

BANG!

---

A gunshot rang out.

---

The bullet grazed past the Hunter's head.

---

Instant reaction.

---

In the next second—

---

it vanished.

---

Gone.

---

Too fast to track.

---

Arjun's eyes widened.

---

"What… was that…?"

---

The man grabbed his arm.

---

"That was a warning."

---

Silence.

---

"Or maybe…"

---

A pause.

---

"An invitation."

---

Arjun slowly looked back toward the tower.

---

Dark.

---

Silent.

---

But he could feel it—

---

Something was watching.

---

Something was aware.

---

And now—

---

the game had changed.

---

The noise around him slowly faded.

---

Not because the chaos had stopped—

---

But because Arjun's focus had narrowed.

---

Everything else became background.

---

The screams.

The gunfire.

The fear.

---

None of it mattered anymore.

---

Because now—

---

he understood one thing.

---

This world wasn't just broken.

---

It was controlled.

---

Someone was watching.

---

Someone was deciding.

---

And somehow—

---

he had become part of that decision.

---

Arjun clenched his fists.

---

"I won't be controlled…"

---

His voice was low.

---

But steady.

---

The man beside him glanced at him again.

---

"You say that now…"

---

A pause.

---

"But this place…"

---

"…it changes people."

---

Arjun didn't respond.

---

His eyes were still on the tower.

---

Dark.

---

Silent.

---

But alive.

---

Watching.

---

Waiting.

---

And then—

---

for just a brief second—

---

a shadow moved at the top.

---

Arjun's breath caught.

---

Not clearly visible.

---

Not fully seen.

---

But enough.

---

Enough to confirm—

---

He was being observed.

---

Chosen.

---

A slow chill ran down his spine.

---

Because deep down—

---

he felt it.

---

This wasn't random.

---

This wasn't survival anymore.

---

This was something else.

---

Something bigger.

---

And whatever had started…

---

was far from over.

---

A distant alarm began to ring.

---

Loud.

Sharp.

Relentless.

---

The entire safe zone shifted again.

---

Guards rushed past them.

Orders shouted from every direction.

---

"Lock all inner gates!"

---

"Track the Hunter's movement!"

---

"No one moves without clearance!"

---

Control tightened.

---

Like the entire place had just been placed under lockdown.

---

Arjun watched everything carefully.

---

"This isn't the first time…" he muttered.

---

The man beside him didn't deny it.

---

"It won't be the last either."

---

Arjun's eyes narrowed.

---

"So they're used to this?"

---

The man gave a slow nod.

---

"They adapt."

---

A pause.

---

"But not fast enough."

---

Another roar echoed.

---

Closer.

---

Stronger.

---

The ground beneath them vibrated slightly.

---

Arjun clenched his jaw.

---

"If that thing keeps evolving…"

---

"…this place won't survive."

---

The man looked at him.

---

Then said quietly—

---

"Maybe it's not supposed to."

---

Silence.

---

That answer didn't sit right.

---

Not at all.

---

Arjun's gaze shifted again—

---

back to the tower.

---

Something about it felt different now.

---

Not just authority.

---

Not just fear.

---

But purpose.

---

As if everything happening—

---

the chaos…

the Hunter…

the control—

---

was all part of something planned.

---

"Who is he… really?" Arjun asked.

---

This time—

---

the man didn't hesitate.

---

He answered.

---

Low.

---

Careful.

---

"Someone who doesn't just control people…"

---

A pause.

---

"…but understands monsters."

---

Arjun's heartbeat slowed.

---

That sentence hit differently.

---

Because suddenly—

---

a terrifying possibility formed in his mind.

---

"What if…"

---

He hesitated.

---

Then said it anyway—

---

"What if he's not trying to stop them?"

---

Silence.

---

The man didn't respond.

---

But that silence—

---

was enough.

---

Arjun felt it.

---

Cold.

---

Heavy.

---

Real.

---

Because if that was true—

---

Then this wasn't a safe zone.

---

It was a cage.

---

And everyone inside it—

---

was part of an experiment.

To be continued....
