"well well well. Look who's here. If it isn't little miss jasp-"
"What do you want Maria?" I cut her off before she could complete my full name.
Unfortunately she caught it. Her eyes narrowed, and then suddenly, she smiled as if understanding.
Oh no. No no no. This can't be happening.
"I see. So I take it they don't know?"
"Don't know what?" Kuya Angelo asked. Shit. Now what?
"Yeah Jay, what is she talking about?" Yuri added. Damn you red rooster. Why do you want to know?
"Know that she's a b!tch." I replied calmly.
Her eyes narrowed again as she flipped some of her hair back dramatically. I rolled my eyes. "What did you just say?" She asked pretending as if she hadn't heard a word.
"Oh. I didn't realise the Lopez's heir had gone deaf." I said, letting the others know I knew exactly who I was talking to.
"Watch how you speak to me. If my father hears-"
"Aww. What's wrong? Daddy's not here to handle it for you?" I asked with fake sympathy.
"What's the commotion here?" A voice called out. Adrian Lopez stepped out sounding like he was bored of dealing with his full grown daughter's tantrums. The Hanamitchis stood up immediately, trying to tell him there was no problem and trying to please him. But his gaze, they fell directly on me.
"Jay?" He asked sounding shocked. I shot him a warning look. They don't know about me. I intend to keep it that way. My eyes sent out the message. And seemingly he caught it.
"Took you long enough." I said grinning. The Hanamitchis stared looking completely dumbfounded as they realised that the family they were trying so hard to please were aldready familiar with the girl they thought was poor and weak.
Mr. Lopez straightened up slightly. "Miss Fernandez. Nice to meet you." He said extending his hand formally even though there was a familiar glint in his eyes that suggested otherwise.
I raised an eyebrow. "What's with the formality?"
He grinned, which made the people at the table even more shocked. Adrian Lopez was not a man who so much as smiled at anyone. He mostly didn't even spare anyone a glance.
He straightened his tie slightly. "I'm being sophisticated." He said with a wink.
"You're being unconvincing." I said. Kiefer was watching this exchange with growing surprise.
"Jay?" He spoke up. "Do you know him?"
"Yes dear. Please tell me how, exactly, do you know a man like him?" Yuri's mother asked. The implication, the emphasis she put on the words you, and her tone was clear.
How does a poor nobody like me know him. If that's the question you're asking Mrs Hanamitchi, the answer is I'm not a poor nobody.
I didn't, however, say any of that out loud. Before I could answer, Mr. Lopez beat me to it. "My daughter and her studied in the same school." He said, refering to Maria.
"That's one way to tell you owned the school I studied in." I said.
He smiled. "I told you. I'm being humble and sophisticated."
I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could a gentle, warm voice interrupted.
"Jay, dear, how have you been?" Mrs Lopez stepped forward, as if coming to hug me.
I extended my hand formally. "Pleased to meet you Mrs. Lopez."
She raised an eyebrow. "What's with the fake formality?" She asked. I grinned.
"Your husband was the one who suggested we be formal. Sophisticated, in his exact words." I said with a shrug
She rolled her eyes. "My husband," she said glaring pointedly at him "tends to spout a lot of nonsense most of the time. Ignore him dear." She said, stepping forward for a hug. And this time, I obliged giving her a small and polite side hug.
"Stopped getting into trouble in your new school?" Mr. Lopez asked.
"Of course I have..." I paused dramatically. He smiled as if proud. "Not." I completed my sentence.
He chuckled and shook his head. "Of course you haven't. What else can I expect from you? Always getting into trouble for all the right reasons."
Mrs. Hanamitchi frowned."Right reasons?" She asked.
"Yeah." He answered."Puching bullies. Saving people who are getting bullied using violence. That sort of things. I felt guilty to even give her detention." He said.
Maria, who had been standing there fuming, spoke up, turning to face me. "Why do my parents seem to like you more than me?"
"Probably because they like genuine people and your personality is as fake as your face?" I suggested innocently, not even bothering to look up from eating.
Her fake smile flickered as her eyes narrowed. "You haven't changed at all, have you? Still speaking back to me this way."
"I see no reason to." I said with a casual shrug of my shoulders. I paused, then looked at her up and down, and smiled fake sympathetically. "Guess you can't say the same about yourself though."
She squeeled, stomped her foot, and stormed of dramatically, making a scene on purpose.
Gosh I just remembered why I hate her. So dramatic.
" I apologise for my daughter's behaviour. I assure you she doesn't always behave like that." Mr. Lopez said with a heavy sigh.
The Hanamitchis, eager to please them nodded immediately. "Yes Mr. Lopez. Of course we understand. She's really pretty too."
I, however, just raised an eyebrow. "Does she not? I distinctly seem to remember otherwise." I commented dryly.
He smiled sheepishly. The Hanamitchis shot me a look that said shut up. I ignored them.
"Wait. What are you even doing here? Today is Thursday and you usually have those stupid pointless- uhm, I mean- very informative lectures that you personally take the students." I said, remembering the ritual that meant so much to him. Him and Mrs Lopez does that every Thursday, each Thursday for each grade.
"Stupid and pointless?" He asked raising an eyebrow. This time, it was my turn to grin sheepishly.
Great Jay. Way to piss off your former principal. Time to do some damage control.
I opened my mouth to give an excuse but he cut me off.
"It's fine. I can't give you detention now anyway. And to answer your question, Maria dragged me here and we bought Celia with us so we can't leave her with ria you know. She's not that responsible." He said.
"Celia's here? Where's my little partner in crime?" I asked aldready searching for her. Celia was 6 years old. And right that moment a small figure rushed forward.
"Ate Jay!" She squeeled as she collided with Jay.
"Woah. Easy. Hey there little tornado." I said ruffling her hair a little. Then a brilliant idea popped up to me. Yeah. That happens very rarely."Wait. You can leave Celia with me. Maria aldready joined her friends at the table."
"Are you sure? I wouldn't want to interrupt your dinner." He asked.
I nodded. "It's no trouble, really." I assured him.
He nodded then."okay. I'll be back as soon as possible to pick her up. Maybe like 20 minutes?" I nodded again, then smiled. "It's fine, really. Take your time." He smiled gratefully and left hurriedly. I made Celia sit in a chair beside me. Around me conversation resumed.
"I heard he only talks nicely to that mysterious person everyone is talking aboit you know? The CEO of jjm empire. So don't go thinking you're all that." Mrs Hanamitchi said, unaware that she was, in fact talking to the very same CEO. I promptly ignored her and continued eating.
Until Celia suddenly looked up at me. "Ate? Do you think I look ugly?" She asked. Her little voice was quivering slightly and my heart broke. Who had told this little angel that?
" Of course not, sweetheart. You look beautiful. Who told you that?" I asked.
"A few guys in my class. They were bullying me. They told me to do they're homework for them, and when I refused and talked back, they called me ugly." And that was the exact type of thing I stopped from happening in my old school- holy saints. Exept no one are saints.
"You know, I have a really good policy about bullies." I said calmly taking a sip of my juice. Even Kiefer and kiegan looked interested now. Celia looked at me. "What is it?" She asked. They all were probably expecting a ignore them or they're not worth your time speech from me. Instead I winked at her and said "if they talk too much or get too annoying, punch them in the mouth. That'll shut em up." I said. She giggled. Honey looked at me as if I had sprouted horns, and Kiefer smacked his own forehead with his hands.
"If I do that, my dad will ground me." She said.
"Lucky you. If your dad comes to know I said this to you he will bury me alive. So this stays between us okay." I said.
"Okay. Promise." She said holding out her pinky. I hooked my own little finger around her tiny one. "Deal" I said.
The rest of the dinner went somewhat peacefully, minus honey's constant flirting and the Hanamitchis pestering me about wedding details. Not like they asked me my opinion. They told me what they had aldready planned.
Then Mr and Mrs Lopez returned. "Thanks for watching her." He said. Then saw the mischievous grin on my and Celia's face. His eyes narrowed. "What did you tell her? Did you teach her violence?" He asked suspiciously. I managed to keep an innocent face.
"I don't know what you're talking about." I said trying to sound convincing. Then when he was looking at Maria, I pointed towards my pinky at Celia reminding her of the deal. She caught on immediately.
Hehe. Partner in crime for a reason.
"I don't believe that for a second. Did you teach her to fight?" Celia, being the amazing little gremlin she was, tugged at his sleeve and looked up at him. "Dad? What's violence? Also ate didn't teach me anything." She said, turning just enough to wink at me before going back to her innocent act.
