Chapter 25 - The Place Where Gods Go To Die

The world didn't collapse. It peeled. Layer after Layer, reality folding into something deeper. Something older. Something that had been watching. Long before Elara ever existed. Kael couldn't feel his body. Or maybe he wasn't supposed to. Everything stretched light turning into lines. Sound into echoes. Elara! He shouted. Her hand found his. Still there. Still real. I'm here, she whispered. But her voice fading. Like she didn't fully belong here.

The deeper they fell, the more unstable she became. Cracks of light spread across her skin. This place rejects me, she said. Kael tightened his grip. Then we leave. A pause. We can't.

Darkness gathered. Not empty. Alive. And from it, a figure stepped forward. Broken light forming a body. You shouldn't have come. Kael froze. Noah but something was different. He wasn't screaming anymore. He wasn't breaking. He was calm.

I'm not your Noah anymore, he said quietly. Elara stepped forward. You are still you. He smiled faintly. I remember everything now. Silence. Every world. Every choice. Every version of us. Kael's heart dropped. And? A pause. They all end the same. In every version Noah continued, you lose her. Kael's breath hitched. And in the ones where you don't. He looked at Elara. She stops being her. Silence.

Elara shook her head. That's not true. Noah stepped closer. Then show me one. She couldn't. Because there wasn't.

The darkness split. And something emerged. Not a body. Not a form. A presence. Everywhere. You have come far. Its voice wasn't heard. It was known. Kael clenched his fists. You made this. A pause. I allowed it. Elara froze. What do you mean? The presence shifted. You were not the first. Silence. Nor will you be the last.

You are a function,it said. A response to imbalance. Elara's voice trembled. No you exist to create and reset. Everything broke again.

I'm not real, she whispered. Kael grabbed her. Don't listen to it! But the doubt already there. The presence spoke again. You seek an ending. A pause. I can give you one. Silence. Kael's eyes narrowed. What kind? A stable world. A pause. No suffering. No choices. No loss. In exchange the space grew colder. Elara returns to her function. Silence.

That means, Kael whispered. The answer came: she ceases to be. Kael's hands shook. Noah didn't move. Elara closed her eyes. It would end everything, she whispered. Kael stepped forward. It would end you.

I was never supposed to be me, she said. A tear fell. Maybe this is right. No Kael said instantly. You don't get to disappear just because it's easier. Silence.

I accept. Both of them froze. Noah. Stepping forward. I will take her place.

Everything stopped. Kael's voice broke: what? Noah looked at Elara. Soft. Real. You deserve to exist. A pause. I don't. The presence watched. Interested. Trade accepted. Light exploded. And Noah disappeared.
