Chapter 26 - The Memory That Refused To Die

The trade was complete. Or at least that's what the world believed. But something was wrong. Terribly wrong. Kael woke up. In silence. Soft light through a window. Warm air. Peace. Too much Peace. No, he whispered. His body felt whole. No pain. No fractures. No cracks in the sky. No screams. He stood up slowly. Walked outside. People smiling. Laughing. No fear. No loss. No memory. A perfect world. This is wrong, Kael said.

He found her. Of course he did. Standing near the edge of a lake, watching the reflection of a sky that never broke. Elara, she turned. And smiled. Soft. Peaceful. Happy. And that, terrified him you are awake, she said gently. Kael stepped closer. Do you remember? A pause. She tilted her head. Remember what? Silence. Everything inside him collapsed again. No Noah. No war. No choices. No suffering. Just existence.

Kael stepped back. This isn't real. Elara frowned slightly. It is now. That voice not fully hers. The air shifted and for a moment the sky glitched. Just a flicker. Enough. Kael saw it. The truth beneath. A cage. Elara, he said slowly. You are not happy. She froze. I am. No. A step closer. You just don't remember why you shouldn't be. Silence.

Something cracked. Inside her. A flicker pain. Kael? He grabbed her hand. Remember him. A pause. Noah. Her body shook. Images flooded in. Screams. Light. The core. His voice. I will take her place. She collapsed. No, no, no, no.

It's not gone. Kael said. They just buried it. Tears streamed down her face. I forgot him. That was worse than losing him. The sky cracked again slightly. The presence returned. You were not meant to remember. Kael stood in front of her. We are done listening to you.

The presence paused. Anomaly detected. A pause. Memory persistence beyond rest.

A whisper, soft. Broken. Elara, she froze. That voice, impossible. Noah? The sky split, not fully, just enough and behind it, a silhouette. Holding the world together. Cracked. Breaking. But still there. He's still fighting, Kael said. Elara stood slowly. Tears falling. Then we fight back.

The perfect world began to shake. People froze. Smiles faded. Reality resisted. But they pushed. Together. For the first time not choosing between each other. Choosing against everything else. The presence shifted. This was not a possible outcome. Kael smiled faintly. Get used to it.

The sky finally cracked wide and from whitin Noah's voice, stronger this time. I'm still here. Silence. Elara stepped forward. And for the first time she didn't hesitate. I'm coming for you.
