Kaelen's POV
The silence stretched between us like a taut wire. Each second crawled by, punctuated only by my ragged breathing. My hands had finally stopped their trembling, but my mother's anguished voice still echoed through my skull. The delicate had done exactly what I'd hoped she could do. She'd reached into the darkness of the past and dragged out the most excruciating moment this place had ever witnessed.
Now I needed her to do it again.
Jaxson shifted toward the door, his fingers closing around the handle. He turned back to study my face with those calculating eyes of his. "You absolutely sure about this path you're taking?"
"Bring them back," I said.
