Chapter 7 - The Key to Ruin

The house was falling apart.

Cracks stretched across the walls, the ceiling barely holding together, debris scattered everywhere. What used to be Danny's room was now nothing more than a battlefield.

And at the center of it—

Silence.

But not the peaceful kind.

The kind that comes after something irreversible.

Danny couldn't move.

Couldn't think.

Couldn't breathe properly.

"You're the reason this world is about to fall apart."

Abby's words echoed in his head.

Over.

And over.

"…That's not funny," he said finally, his voice low.

A beat.

"…Tell me you're joking."

Abby didn't smile.

Didn't react.

That alone was enough.

Danny let out a small, dry laugh.

"…Right."

He ran a hand through his hair, pacing once, then stopping abruptly.

"…So let me get this straight."

His voice sharpened slightly.

"You fall from another world."

"You bring monsters with you."

"And now you're saying I'm the problem?"

A pause.

"…That I'm the reason this is happening?"

His chest tightened.

"…How does that even make sense?!"

The frustration in his voice wasn't anger.

Not fully.

It was confusion.

Fear.

Something he couldn't understand.

Abby watched him quietly.

Her expression unreadable.

"…Because they didn't come for me first," she said.

Danny froze.

"…What?"

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

Focused.

"They came for you."

The words hit harder than anything before.

Danny took a step back.

"…That's not possible."

"Then why did it ignore me?" Abby pressed. "Why did it stop when it reached you?"

He didn't answer.

Because he couldn't.

"…And why," she continued, her voice quieter now, "did it call you 'Key'?"

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Danny clenched his fists.

"…I don't know," he said through his teeth.

"And that's the problem."

A faint rumble echoed outside.

Both of them went still.

Danny looked toward the broken window.

"…Please don't tell me…"

"It's not attacking," Abby interrupted.

Her eyes were focused.

Listening.

"…It's gathering."

Danny's stomach dropped.

"…That's worse."

Abby didn't disagree.

A few seconds passed.

Then Danny exhaled sharply.

"…Explain it."

Abby glanced at him.

"…What?"

"Everything," he said firmly. "No more half answers."

A pause.

"…If I'm involved in this if I'm really the reason this is happening, then I deserve to know."

For once He wasn't hesitant.

He wasn't unsure.

He was serious.

And Abby noticed.

"…You're not backing out," she said.

Danny let out a small breath.

"…Can I?"

A beat.

"…Even if I wanted to?"

No answer.

Because they both knew the truth.

He was already involved.

Too deep.

Abby looked away slightly.

Thinking.

Then—

"…The Rift doesn't open randomly," she said.

Danny listened.

Carefully.

"It connects two points."

"Two worlds."

"Two… existences."

She paused briefly.

"…But for it to stay open…"

Her eyes shifted back to him.

"It needs an anchor."

Danny's breath caught.

"…An anchor?"

Abby nodded.

"…Something that exists in both worlds."

Silence.

Then Danny's eyes widened slightly.

"…That's impossible."

"Exactly," she said quietly.

A pause.

"Which is why you shouldn't exist."

The words landed cold.

Sharp.

Danny stared at her.

"…Excuse me?"

"I don't mean you as a person," she clarified, though her tone remained serious. "I mean what you are."

"…And what exactly am I?" he asked.

Abby stepped closer.

Slow.

Measured.

Her gaze locked onto his.

"Something the Rift recognizes."

The air grew heavier again.

Not from her.

From him.

Faint.

But undeniable.

Danny felt it.

That strange distortion from before It flickered again.

Unstable.

Alive.

"…I didn't ask for this," he muttered.

"I know," Abby replied.

A pause.

"…But that doesn't change anything."

Another rumble echoed outside.

Louder this time.

Closer.

Danny clenched his jaw.

"…So what now?"

Abby didn't hesitate.

> "Now we move."

"…Move?"

"They're not attacking because they're waiting," she said. "Which means something bigger is coming."

Danny didn't like the sound of that.

"…And staying here—?"

"Gets you killed."

"…Great."

He glanced around what was left of his house.

His room.

His space.

Destroyed.

Just like that.

"…So much for normal," he muttered.

Abby watched him for a second.

Then—

"…You can still turn back," she said.

Danny blinked.

"…What?"

"If you run now," she continued, "if you ignore all of this, maybe you can still live a normal life."

Silence.

Danny stared at her.

Then He laughed.

Soft.

Short.

"…You're really bad at lying."

Abby didn't respond.

"…There's no going back," he said.

A beat.

"…Not after everything that just happened."

He looked up at her.

His expression is Different now.

Still uncertain.

Still confused.

But something else was there too.

Resolve.

"So stop giving me options I don't have."

Abby held his gaze.

For a moment Neither of them spoke.

Then Very faintly She smiled.

Not teasing.

Not playful.

Just…

Genuine.

"…Alright," she said.

A pause.

"Then stay close."

Danny nodded once.

"…Yeah."

---

Outside The shadows shifted.

Not small ones.

Not weak ones.

Something massive moved in the distance.

Something that made even Abby's aura react.

The ground trembled slightly.

Danny felt it.

"…You said something bigger was coming…"

Abby didn't look away from the darkness beyond.

Her eyes sharpened.

Dangerous.

Focused.

"It's here."

A deep, low sound echoed through the night.

Not a screech.

Not a roar.

Something worse.

Something Ancient.

Danny's breath caught.

"…What is that…?"

Abby's voice dropped.

Serious.

Cold.

"The kind of thing that doesn't come unless it's certain."

A pause.

Then—

"Certain it won't lose."

The darkness outside shifted again.

Closer.

Heavier.

And this time It wasn't hiding.
