Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8: ZERO PROTOCOL

L

The chamber roared to life.

Not with sound alone—but with motion, force, and intent.

The ground trembled violently beneath their boots as the massive structure pulsed brighter, faster, stronger. Veins of dark, organic material spread across the walls like living circuitry, connecting everything—floor, ceiling, and core—into a single, breathing system.

Captain Adrian Voss didn't hesitate.

"Focus fire on the large one!" he commanded.

---

The creature rising from the fractured ground let out a deep, bone-rattling roar. Its body was massive—easily three times the size of the others they had faced. But what made it terrifying wasn't just its size.

It was its stability.

Its form didn't flicker or distort wildly like the earlier ones.

It held shape.

Controlled.

Refined.

---

"It's not changing!" Reyes shouted, backing up. "It's already stabilized!"

Kade grinned through the tension. "Good. Means we finally have something we can actually kill."

"Don't assume that," Voss replied sharply.

---

They opened fire.

Bullets tore into the creature's chest, shoulders, and limbs. Impacts landed—visible damage appeared—

But unlike before, the creature didn't immediately regenerate.

Instead…

It adapted.

---

The next volley hit—and deflected.

---

Kade blinked. "Did you see that?"

Reyes's eyes widened. "It hardened its outer layer… like armor!"

---

The creature moved.

Fast.

Too fast for something that size.

---

"Scatter!" Voss shouted.

---

It slammed into the ground where they had stood a split second earlier, the impact sending shockwaves through the chamber. Metal platforms collapsed. Stone cracked. The entire structure groaned under the force.

---

Kade rolled to the side and came up firing. "Okay, that's new!"

---

Reyes scrambled behind a console, frantically working. "I'm trying to access the Zero Protocol—but the system's locked! It's like something is blocking it from inside!"

---

Voss's eyes flicked toward the humanoid figure—Korr.

Still standing.

Still watching.

---

"It's him," Voss said.

---

The realization hit instantly.

---

Kade turned. "You're saying that thing is controlling the system?"

---

"Not just controlling it," Reyes said, voice shaking. "It is the system now. It merged with it somehow."

---

The creature lunged again.

This time, it didn't miss.

---

Kade barely raised his weapon before the massive form slammed into him, sending him crashing into a steel support column.

The impact echoed brutally.

---

"Kade!" Reyes shouted.

---

Kade groaned, struggling to push himself up. Blood ran down the side of his face.

"I'm good…" he muttered, though he clearly wasn't.

---

Voss stepped forward, drawing the creature's attention.

"Over here."

---

The massive entity turned.

Its eyes locked onto him.

---

For a moment—

Everything slowed.

---

This wasn't just another enemy.

This was the culmination.

The result of every encounter.

Every adaptation.

Every mistake.

---

"You are the strongest," the humanoid voice echoed behind him.

---

Voss didn't look back.

---

"You lead," it continued.

"You challenge."

"You evolve me."

---

Voss raised his rifle.

Cold.

Focused.

---

"Then I'll be the one to end you."

---

He fired.

---

This time—not at the creature.

---

At the core.

---

The shot struck one of the pulsing conduits feeding into the central structure.

Sparks exploded.

Energy surged violently.

---

The chamber reacted instantly.

---

Reyes looked up. "What did you just do?!"

---

"Disrupted the flow," Voss said. "If it's all connected, we don't fight the body—we break the system."

---

Kade coughed, dragging himself to cover. "I like that plan a lot better."

---

The creature roared again—but this time, something was different.

It hesitated.

Just for a fraction of a second.

---

Reyes saw it.

"Captain—it reacted! You hit something important!"

---

Voss didn't waste time.

"Reyes, get that protocol online."

---

"I'm trying!" Reyes snapped. "But it's fighting me—every command I send, it counters instantly!"

---

"Then stop being predictable," Voss said.

---

Reyes paused.

Then his expression changed.

---

"Right…"

---

Instead of following standard access patterns, Reyes began inputting erratic commands—randomized sequences, broken protocols, unconventional pathways.

---

The system lagged.

Just slightly.

---

"It's working!" Reyes said. "It can't predict irregular input as fast!"

---

Behind them—

Korr smiled.

---

"…interesting…"

---

The massive creature surged forward again—faster now, more aggressive.

---

"Keep it busy!" Voss ordered.

---

Kade forced himself up, gripping his weapon. "Yeah… let's dance."

---

He opened fire again—this time targeting the creature's joints, just as Voss had taught.

---

The creature adapted—but slower now.

The disruption was working.

---

Voss moved strategically, firing at key conduits, destabilizing the structure further. Each shot caused visible reactions—pulses weakening, connections flickering.

---

The chamber began to break down.

---

Reyes shouted, "I'm in! I've got partial access!"

---

Voss didn't look back. "How long?"

---

"Two minutes!"

---

"Too long," Kade muttered.

---

The creature roared again—louder this time.

Angrier.

---

It lunged—

But Voss was ready.

---

He sidestepped—

Fired—

Then drove his blade into one of the glowing veins along its side.

---

The creature convulsed violently.

---

"…pain…"

---

The word echoed.

Clear.

New.

---

Voss froze for a split second.

---

It felt pain.

---

That meant—

---

"Reyes!" he shouted. "It's not fully adapted yet—push it!"

---

"I'm trying!" Reyes yelled. "It's locking me out again!"

---

Korr stepped forward slightly.

Watching.

Calculating.

---

"You are close," it said.

---

Voss turned, finally facing it.

---

"Close enough."

---

He raised his weapon—

---

And aimed directly at its head.

---

Korr didn't move.

---

"…if you destroy me…"

---

A pause.

---

"…you destroy your only chance to understand."

---

Voss's finger tightened on the trigger.

---

"We're not here to understand."

---

His voice was cold.

Final.

---

"We're here to end it."

---

Gunfire erupted.

---

At the same moment—

Reyes shouted:

"I'VE GOT IT!"

---

The system activated.

---

A deep, mechanical rumble echoed through the chamber.

---

ZERO PROTOCOL INITIATED

---

The walls began to collapse.

The core pulsed wildly.

Energy surged out of control.

---

The creature roared—

Not in anger—

But in something new.

---

Fear.

---

"…you choose destruction…"

---

Voss lowered his weapon slightly.

---

"Yeah," he said.

---

The chamber began to fall apart.

---

And beneath the ice—

For the first time—

The entity realized…

It might not survive.
