Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 9: COLLAPSE

The moment the protocol activated—

Everything began to die.

---

A deafening rumble tore through Level 3 as the core surged violently, its steady pulse breaking into chaotic bursts of energy. Light flickered wildly across the chamber, casting fractured shadows that moved like living things.

Then came the voice.

Not calm.

Not controlled.

But fractured.

---

"…no…"

---

Captain Adrian Voss didn't wait.

"Move!" he roared.

---

The floor beneath them cracked open in jagged lines, splitting apart as if the earth itself was rejecting what lay beneath it. Metal supports twisted, snapping under invisible pressure. The ancient structure groaned—a deep, primal sound that echoed like something wounded.

---

Reyes scrambled away from the console, eyes wide. "We triggered a full collapse! This whole place is coming down!"

Kade grabbed him by the arm, dragging him forward. "That was the plan, genius!"

---

Behind them—

The massive creature let out a roar that shook the chamber.

But this time—

It wasn't just rage.

---

It was desperation.

---

Its body began to destabilize, the smooth, controlled surface cracking apart into shifting layers. The armor it had formed flickered, struggling to maintain structure as the energy feeding it faltered.

---

Voss turned briefly, assessing.

"It's breaking down," he said.

---

Reyes shook his head. "No—it's trying to adapt again! It's fighting the collapse!"

---

Kade cursed. "Of course it is."

---

The humanoid figure—Korr—stepped forward into the chaos.

For the first time—

It looked uncertain.

---

"…this outcome… was not optimal…"

---

Voss didn't slow.

"Yeah," he said coldly. "Welcome to failure."

---

Chunks of rock and metal rained down around them as they sprinted toward the tunnel. The path they had used earlier was already collapsing, forcing them to navigate unstable ground and shifting terrain.

---

Another violent tremor hit.

---

Reyes stumbled. "We're not going to make it!"

---

Voss grabbed him, pulling him forward. "You don't stop. You don't think. You move."

---

Kade fired a burst behind them, not to kill—but to slow.

Because the creature—

Even now—

Was still coming.

---

It charged through falling debris, its form fluctuating wildly. Limbs extended, retracted, reshaped—desperately trying to maintain cohesion.

---

"…you cannot end this…"

---

The voice echoed again.

But now—

It sounded unstable.

Breaking.

---

Voss reached the entrance to the tunnel—

Or what remained of it.

---

The explosion from earlier had weakened the passage. Now, with the full collapse underway, it was barely holding together.

---

"Through here!" Voss shouted.

---

They squeezed into the narrow opening just as a massive section of the chamber behind them collapsed entirely.

---

Darkness swallowed them.

---

The tunnel shook violently as they pushed forward, debris falling around them. Every step felt like it could be their last.

---

Reyes gasped for breath. "How long before this whole place caves in?!"

---

Voss didn't answer.

Because the truth was—

It already had.

---

Behind them—

A surge of movement.

---

Kade turned.

And froze.

---

"It's still coming…"

---

The creature forced itself into the tunnel, tearing through the collapsing rock like it wasn't even there. Its body was smaller now—but more concentrated.

More desperate.

More dangerous.

---

"…survival… required…"

---

Reyes's voice shook. "It's not trying to fight anymore—it's trying to escape!"

---

That hit hard.

---

Voss stopped.

Turned.

---

"No."

---

Kade blinked. "Captain—?"

---

"If it gets out of here…" Voss said, voice low and deadly, "this doesn't end."

---

Reyes's face paled. "You're not saying—"

---

"I am."

---

Voss stepped back toward the collapsing tunnel.

Toward the creature.

---

Kade grabbed his arm. "That's suicide."

---

Voss met his eyes.

"Then make sure it counts."

---

For a moment—

Silence.

---

Then Kade released him.

Slowly.

---

"…damn it," he muttered.

---

Reyes shook his head. "We can't leave you—"

---

"You're not," Voss said.

"You're finishing the mission."

---

Another violent tremor shook the tunnel.

Time was gone.

---

Kade pulled Reyes back. "We move. Now."

---

Reyes hesitated—

Then nodded.

---

They turned—

And ran.

---

Voss stood alone.

---

The creature emerged fully into the narrow passage, its form shifting rapidly, struggling to stabilize in the confined space.

---

"…you persist…"

---

Voss raised his rifle.

Steady.

Unshaken.

---

"Yeah," he said.

---

He reached into his gear—

And pulled out the last charge.

---

"If I'm going down…"

---

He armed it.

---

"…you're coming with me."

---

The creature lunged.

---

Voss didn't move.

---

Didn't flinch.

---

At the last second—

He stepped forward.

---

Closing the distance.

---

And triggered the charge.

---

The explosion ripped through the tunnel—

Blinding.

Deafening.

Final.

---

---

Far above—

The surface ice cracked.

Split.

Shifted.

---

The entire facility collapsed inward, swallowed by the frozen earth.

---

Silence followed.

---

Cold.

Endless.

Unbroken.

---

For a long moment—

Nothing moved.

---

Nothing lived.

---

---

Then—

Deep beneath the ice…

A faint pulse.

---

Weak.

But present.

---

Something remained.
