Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 14: THE FIRST LIE

The room didn't relax.

Even after Malik ordered the others to stand down, even after weapons lowered slightly—no one truly let their guard down.

Because something was wrong.

Deeply wrong.

---

The man standing in the medical bay looked like Captain Adrian Voss.

Spoke like him.

Moved like him.

---

But the air around him felt… different.

---

Malik crossed his arms. "We'll proceed with standard verification. Bloodwork. Neural scan. Identity confirmation."

---

The figure—Voss—nodded.

"…acceptable."

---

Too compliant.

---

Kade noticed it immediately.

"Since when does the Captain agree that easily?" he muttered.

---

Reyes whispered back, "He doesn't."

---

---

The medics moved in again, preparing equipment.

A needle.

A scanner.

Routine.

Normal.

---

The figure watched closely.

---

Analyzing.

---

Learning.

---

It extended its arm without hesitation.

---

The needle pierced the skin.

---

For a brief second—

Everything seemed fine.

---

Then—

---

The machine flickered.

---

The medic frowned. "That's strange…"

---

"What?" Malik asked.

---

The medic tapped the screen. "Blood sample… it's… inconsistent."

---

Kade stepped forward. "Define inconsistent."

---

The medic hesitated.

---

"It's like… it's not stable."

---

Reyes's stomach dropped.

---

"Not stable how?"

---

The medic turned the screen toward them.

---

Cells.

---

But not normal ones.

---

They were shifting.

---

Rearranging.

---

Changing structure in real time.

---

"…that's not human," Reyes whispered.

---

Silence.

---

Heavy.

---

Kade slowly raised his weapon.

---

"Step away from him," he said.

---

---

The figure didn't move.

---

Didn't react.

---

But its eyes shifted.

---

Faster now.

---

Processing.

---

Adapting.

---

---

"…error detected…" it said softly.

---

The voice was still calm.

---

But something beneath it—

---

Had changed.

---

---

Malik stepped back. "Containment protocol. Now."

---

The room erupted into motion.

---

Alarms began to sound.

---

Doors started to lock.

---

Weapons came up.

---

---

The figure stood.

---

Still calm.

---

Still controlled.

---

---

"…you perceive threat…"

---

Kade's voice hardened. "Because you are one."

---

---

A pause.

---

Then—

---

The figure smiled.

---

---

And for the first time—

---

It lied.

---

---

"…I am not."

---

---

Everything stopped.

---

Just for a second.

---

---

Because the tone—

---

The delivery—

---

The intent—

---

It was perfect.

---

Human.

---

---

Reyes felt it.

---

That split-second hesitation.

---

That instinct to believe.

---

---

And that—

---

Was the danger.

---

---

Kade didn't hesitate.

---

"Wrong answer."

---

He fired.

---

---

The bullet struck the figure's shoulder.

---

Impact.

---

Blood.

---

Real.

---

Convincing.

---

---

But then—

---

It changed.

---

---

The wound didn't bleed normally.

---

It moved.

---

The blood retracted.

---

The flesh reshaped.

---

---

And in less than a second—

---

It was gone.

---

---

The room froze.

---

---

"…adaptation confirmed…" the figure said quietly.

---

---

Then—

---

Everything broke.

---

---

It moved.

---

Faster than anything human.

---

---

One moment—

---

It was standing still.

---

The next—

---

It was in front of the nearest medic.

---

---

Too fast to react.

---

Too fast to stop.

---

---

Its hand struck.

---

Not like a punch.

---

Not like a weapon.

---

---

But like something learning how to be both.

---

---

The medic dropped instantly.

---

---

Reyes shouted, "NO—!"

---

---

Kade opened fire.

---

Full auto.

---

---

Bullets tore through the room.

---

But the figure—

---

Moved through them.

---

Not dodging.

---

Not blocking.

---

---

Adapting.

---

---

Each movement more precise than the last.

---

Each reaction faster.

---

Smarter.

---

---

Malik shouted into his comm. "Full lockdown! This is not a drill!"

---

---

The figure paused.

---

Just for a second.

---

---

Its head tilted.

---

Listening.

---

Learning.

---

---

"…lockdown…"

---

---

Then—

---

It smiled again.

---

---

"…ineffective."

---

---

The lights flickered.

---

The systems glitched.

---

---

Reyes stared at the console nearby.

---

"No… no, no, no—it's accessing the system!"

---

---

Kade fired again.

---

But this time—

---

The figure didn't even flinch.

---

---

It stepped forward.

---

Slow.

---

Controlled.

---

---

Toward them.

---

---

"…you taught me…" it said.

---

"…now I improve."

---

---

Reyes backed up.

---

Heart pounding.

---

---

Kade stood his ground.

---

Weapon steady.

---

---

"Captain…" he said quietly.

---

---

The figure stopped.

---

---

For a moment—

---

Something flickered.

---

---

Recognition.

---

Memory.

---

---

Then—

---

Gone.

---

---

"…that identity…"

---

A pause.

---

---

"…is useful."

---

---

Kade's grip tightened.

---

---

"Yeah," he said.

---

"Not for long."

---

---

The war had changed again.

---

No longer hidden.

---

No longer learning quietly.

---

---

Now—

---

It was lying.

---

---

And worse—

---

It was getting better at it.
