Chapter 15 - CHAPTER 15 — Don’t Get Used to This

The apartment was quiet.

Not heavy.

Not tense.

Just… quiet.

Elena stood by the window.

City lights stretched below.

Soft.

Distant.

She exhaled slowly.

Everything felt different.

Not safe.

Not normal.

But different.

Behind her—

She heard him move.

Not close.

Not far.

Just there.

That was new.

"You can take the room on the left," he said.

Her brow furrowed.

"What?"

"The guest room."

A pause.

"You're staying."

It wasn't a question.

But it wasn't an order either.

She turned.

"You're giving me a choice now?"

A slight pause.

"Yes."

That surprised her.

She walked slowly toward the hallway.

Opened the door.

The room was simple.

Clean.

Minimal.

Just like the rest of the apartment.

"You planned this too?" she asked.

From inside the room.

A pause behind her.

"No."

She turned.

"You didn't expect me to stay?"

Silence.

Then—

"No."

That was honest.

Again.

She stepped back into the main room.

"I thought you controlled everything."

A faint shift in his expression.

"Not everything."

Silence.

She crossed her arms.

"You didn't control this."

A pause.

Then—

"No."

Her heart skipped.

That meant something.

She walked past him.

Toward the kitchen.

Opened a cabinet.

Empty.

Another.

Still empty.

"You don't cook," she said.

"No."

She turned slightly.

"You don't eat?"

"I eat."

"That's not what I asked."

A pause.

Then—

"I don't stay here long enough to need it."

That made sense.

But it didn't feel right.

She grabbed a glass.

Filled it with water.

Her movements slow.

Thoughtful.

"You live like you're passing through your own life," she said.

Silence.

He didn't answer.

That was the answer.

She leaned against the counter.

"You built everything," she said,

"but you don't live in it."

A pause.

Then—

"I don't need to."

Her eyes lifted.

"That's not true."

Silence.

"You just don't know how," she added.

That landed.

His gaze sharpened slightly.

"You think you understand me?"

"No," she said.

A step closer.

"But I'm starting to."

Silence.

Something shifted.

Again.

He stepped closer.

Not aggressive.

Not distant.

Just closer.

"You're making assumptions," he said.

Her voice stayed calm.

"I'm making observations."

A pause.

"Then observe this," he said quietly.

She frowned slightly.

Then—

He reached past her.

Opened a drawer.

Pulled out something small.

A box.

Her eyes narrowed.

"What is that?"

He didn't answer.

He opened it.

Inside—

Medicine.

Her breath caught.

"Your father's treatment," he said.

Silence.

"I arranged everything."

Her chest tightened.

"What?"

"He's stable."

A pause.

"He'll stay that way."

Her heart skipped.

"You didn't have to—"

"Yes," he said.

Silence.

"That was part of the contract."

Her eyes didn't move.

"That's not what this is," she said quietly.

A pause.

Then—

"No."

She looked at him.

Really looked.

"You're helping me," she said.

"Yes."

"Why?"

Silence.

Then—

"Because I said I would."

That wasn't the full truth.

And they both knew it.

She exhaled slowly.

"Thank you," she said.

The words were soft.

Real.

That made something shift again.

He didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"You don't owe me gratitude."

A pause.

"You owe me compliance."

There it was.

Control again.

But weaker this time.

She stepped closer.

"I don't think that's true anymore."

His gaze dropped slightly.

Then back up.

"You're getting comfortable."

Her heart skipped.

"Maybe."

A pause.

"Don't."

Her breath caught.

"Why?"

His voice lowered.

"Because this ends badly."

Silence.

That wasn't a warning.

That was certainty.

She looked at him.

"And you still want me to stay?"

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

That made everything worse.

Her chest tightened.

Because now…

She wasn't just staying.

She was starting to care.

And that was the most dangerous thing of all.
