Chapter 18 - CHAPTER 18 — Say It Again

Silence filled the space between them.

But it wasn't empty.

It was full.

Too full.

Elena didn't move.

Her words still hanging in the air.

"I already can't."

She felt it the moment she said it.

Too honest.

Too exposed.

But she didn't take it back.

Adrian didn't speak.

Didn't move.

Just watched her.

And that was worse.

"What?" she asked quietly.

A pause.

Then—

"Say it again."

Her breath caught.

"What?"

His voice dropped.

Lower.

More controlled.

More dangerous.

"Say it again."

Her heart started racing.

"That I can't walk away?"

A step closer.

"No."

Silence.

"That you need me."

Her chest tightened.

"That's not what I said."

His gaze didn't move.

"It's what you meant."

Silence.

That wasn't entirely wrong.

And she hated that.

"I don't need you," she said.

A pause.

Then—

"Then why did you call me back?"

Her breath caught.

"I didn't call you."

"You asked for me."

That landed.

Hard.

Her heart beat faster.

"That doesn't mean—"

"It means something."

Silence.

Always back to that.

He stepped closer.

Again.

Too close.

Her breath slowed.

Then quickened.

"Look at me," he said.

She already was.

But something in his voice made it different.

He lifted his hand.

Not touching.

Just enough.

"Say you don't need me," he said quietly.

Her heart pounded.

"I don't need you."

A pause.

Then—

"Again."

Her chest tightened.

"I don't need you."

Silence.

He watched her.

Carefully.

Then—

"You're lying."

Her breath caught.

"I'm not."

"Yes, you are."

Silence.

That was the problem.

He saw everything.

Too clearly.

She stepped closer this time.

Her turn.

"You want me to need you," she said.

His eyes darkened.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No denial.

Nothing.

Her heart skipped.

"That's not normal."

"I told you."

Silence.

"I'm not."

A long pause.

"Why?" she asked.

This time…

He didn't answer immediately.

His gaze dropped.

Then lifted again.

"Because I've never needed anyone."

Her breath caught.

"And now?"

A pause.

Then—

"Now I want to."

Silence.

That changed everything.

Her chest tightened.

"That's not the same thing."

"No."

"But it's close."

Her heart raced.

This wasn't just control anymore.

This was something deeper.

Something neither of them could control.

He stepped closer.

Now there was no space left.

"Say it," he said quietly.

Her voice dropped.

"Say what?"

"That you need me."

Her breath caught.

She should say no.

She should walk away.

She should stop this.

But she didn't.

"I—"

Her voice stopped.

Her heart was too loud.

Her thoughts too fast.

And him—

Too close.

"I…" she tried again.

Nothing.

He watched her.

Waiting.

Not forcing.

Not pushing.

Just waiting.

That was worse.

She looked at him.

Really looked.

At the control.

The danger.

The restraint.

And the one thing he wasn't saying.

Her voice softened.

"I don't know what this is."

Silence.

Then—

"Neither do I."

That surprised her.

That honesty again.

A pause.

Then—

His voice dropped lower.

"But I know I don't want it to stop."

Her heart skipped.

That was the closest thing to a confession.

She stepped back.

Just a little.

Needed space.

Needed air.

"This is dangerous," she said.

A pause.

"Yes."

"And you still want it?"

A beat.

"Yes."

Silence.

Her chest rose slowly.

"Then you're going to regret it."

His gaze didn't move.

"No."

A pause.

"You will."

That landed.

Because for the first time…

She wasn't warning him.

She was warning herself.
